All Is Bright by Summary

For years, each Christmas Eve, I passed lots where holiday trees were not sold. I researched what would happen to the trees left. The answer bought me great sadness. I found a pine cone on the ground years later. It was at that point this story was born. While writing this book I was disappointed for not having a suitable ending. Finally, that ending was provided by my best friend, Charlie. When I completed this book I realized this was my story of walking the Christian path. I hope this provides joy, hope and gladness to all who reads it.

It’s Griffin’s mother, Janice, who invites Elise over for a neighborhood gathering of eggnog and carols. Walking into Janice’s house sends Elise tumbling headlong into memories of her relationship with Griffin—and with Janice, who exudes the kind of warmth Elise ached for after her own mom passed away when she was six. But Griffin has moved on, and suddenly Elise doubts her decision to give him up and lose her chance at being folded into his wonderful family. Confused and reeling, she goes in search of an answer to a universal question: How do we say good-bye to people we’ve loved without losing everything they’ve meant to us? All is Bright by Shannon Stacey Summary

New York Times bestselling author Shannon Stacey celebrates the season in these three timeless holiday novellas Her Holiday Man Christina Forrester is left raising her young son without any of the comforts of their old life. She’s learning to do it all on her own. Well, almost on her own—she’d be lost without Gail, the kind widow across the street. And when Gail’s son Will comes home, the beautiful and determined single mother awakens something in him he thought was buried forever. As Will and Christina are forced to spend more time together, feelings that are more than neighborly grow between them. And with Christmas coming and a child filling both houses with holiday cheer, it becomes nearly impossible not to embrace the joy—and the love—in their lives. Holiday with a Twist Leigh Holloway’s best friend broke Croy Dawson’s heart back in high school, and Croy knows it was Leigh’s fault. They’ve never liked each other, but Croy isn’t cruel: he’d never turn away a pretty woman in need of some family-Christmas fortification. He doesn’t expect her to drink just enough candy-cane martinis to tell him her secrets—and he definitely doesn’t expect to get caught up in her holiday madness. Despite the surprising love and laughter, Croy and Leigh can’t escape the truth: he can’t walk away from his family obligations and she has a life and career to reboot. But anything is possible if your holiday comes with a twist… Hold Her Again Ava Wright isn’t happy to see her high school sweetheart rolling into their hometown a few weeks before Christmas. There’s no way she’ll be able to avoid him. No one can: he’s become a country-music superstar since going solo and leaving Ava behind. Jace Morrow grew up believing “money can’t buy happiness” was something people said to make themselves feel better. But now he knows it’s the truth: no matter how many number-one hits he has, he’ll never recapture the magic of singing with Ava. Missing her—loving her—and living with making the wrong choice in life were what made him who he is. As they fall in love all over again, they’re both faced with choices for their future…and this time Jace intends to make the right one.

Keyboard Skills for Music Educators: Score Reading is the first textbook equip future educators with the ability to play from an open score at the keyboard. Score reading can be a daunting prospect for even the most accomplished pianist, but it is a skill required of all choral and instrumental music instructors. Although most music education curricula include requirements to achieve a certain level of proficiency in open score reading, standard textbooks contain very little material devoted to developing this skill. This textbook provides a gradual and graded approach, progressing from two-part reading to four or more parts in a variety of clefs. Each chapter focuses on one grouping of voices and provides many musical examples from a broad sampling of choral and instrumental repertoire ranging from Renaissance to contemporary works.

All is Clam by Hilary MacLeod Summary

A family of outsiders arrives in a tiny Canadian fishing village, and murder soon follows, in this witty, fast-paced mystery. It’s Christmas at The Shores. There’s no snow yet, but there are so many outdoor lights that the tiny coastal village can be seen from space. Apart from Ian Simmons’ place (and he was from away), there was only one house that wasn’t lit up. It had been dark for years. That was about to change. Wild Rose Cottage was about to come to life, and death, once again. Meanwhile, the villagers wished for snow to complete the Christmas portrait. When it came, they would regret it. With the snow comes the body of newcomer Fitz Fitzpatrick, a former acrobat turned bully and drunk. Mountie Jane Jamieson has seen murder here before, but none where she’d rather not catch the killer. She has to decide whether Fitz fell during a flip—or was pushed, so that his chain became tangled in a tree limb. Either is possible. But though Jamieson’s doing a lot of questioning, no one’s talking . . . “A natural storyteller, superbly equipped both by her character and experience to fashion stories of the lives of everyday people who make their living from the sea.” —Ottawa Review of Books

A Bright Ray of Darkness by Ethan Hawke Summary

The blistering story of a young man making his Broadway debut in Henry IV just as his marriage implodes—a "witty, wise, and heartfelt novel" (Washington Post) about art and love, fame and heartbreak from the acclaimed actor/writer/director. A bracing meditation on fame and celebrity, and the redemptive, healing power of art; a portrait of the ravages of disappointment and divorce; a poignant consideration of the rites of fatherhood and manhood; a novel soaked in rage and sex, longing and despair; and a passionate love letter to the world of theater, A Bright Ray of Darkness showcases Ethan Hawke's gifts as a novelist as never before. Hawke's narrator is a young man in torment, disgusted with himself after the collapse of his marriage, still half hoping for a reconciliation that would allow him to forgive himself and move on as he clumsily, and sometimes hilariously, tries to manage the wreckage of his personal life with whiskey and sex. What saves him is theater: in particular, the challenge of performing the role of Hotspur in a production of Henry IV under the leadership of a brilliant director, helmed by one of the most electrifying—and narcissistic—Falstaff's of all time. Searing, raw, and utterly transfixing, A Bright Ray of Darkness is a novel about shame and beauty and faith, and the moral power of art.

Secrets from a Prison Cell by Tony Vick,Michael T. McRay Summary

Tony Vick is serving two life sentences for murder. After nearly twenty years in prison, Tony has literally taken to the pen to document firsthand what life is like behind bars. This book—handwritten by Tony and later transcribed by outside friends—indirectly challenges the reader to engage prison reform as one of the most important social issues of this generation, wondering if society can shift its emphasis from retribution to rehabilitation. Tony’s new book describes the violent, even horrific, incidents that occur in prison, incidents mostly hidden in the shadows, away from public awareness. It tells you the stories that those invested in incarceration would rather remain secret. As captivating as it is timely, Secrets from a Prison Cell shortens the distance between those outside and inside prison walls. Through personal stories, essays, and poetry, Tony Vick’s book pulls back the curtain on a world invisible to most people, dramatically revealing the realities of life in prison and the power of love to fight dehumanization. For Tony, writing this book has never been about money but about the message. Any proceeds from sales of the book will be donated to the No Exceptions Prison Collective, a non-profit organization that advocates for prison reform. (https://noexceptions.net) No Exception’s mission is furthered by its very name, referencing the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that abolishes slavery, except for those incarcerated in our nation’s prisons. Slavery still exists in America!

Skipping a Beat by Sarah Pekkanen Summary

From the author of the acclaimed The Opposite of Me, a poignant, witty novel about marriage, forgiveness, and the choices that give shape—and limits—to our lives. What would you do if your husband suddenly wanted to rewrite all of the rules of your relationship? This is the question at the heart of Skipping a Beat, Pekkanen’s thought-provoking second book. From the outside, Julia and Michael seem to have it all. Both products of difficult childhoods in rural West Virginia—where they were simply Julie and Mike—they become high school sweethearts and fall in love. Shortly after graduation, they flee their small town to start afresh. Now thirty-somethings, they are living a rarified life in their multi-million-dollar, Washington D.C. home. Julia is a highly sought-after party planner, while Michael has just sold his wildly successful flavored water company for $70 million. But one day, Michael collapses in his office. Four minutes and eight seconds after his cardiac arrest, a portable defibrillator jump-starts his heart. But in those lost minutes he becomes a different man. Money is meaningless to him—and he wants to give it all away. Julia, who sees bits of her life reflected in scenes from the world’s great operas, is now facing with a choice she never anticipated. Should she should walk away from the man she once adored—but who truthfully became a stranger to her long before this pronouncement—or give in to her husband's pleas for a second chance and a promise of a poorer but happier life? As wry and engaging as her debut, but with quiet depth and newfound maturity, Skipping a Beat is an unforgettable portrait of a marriage whose glamorous surface belies the complications and betrayals beneath.

Saving Amelie by Cathy Gohlke Summary

2015 Carol award finalist! Increasingly wary of her father’s genetic research, Rachel Kramer has determined that this trip with him to Germany—in the summer of 1939—will be her last. But a cryptic letter from her estranged friend, begging Rachel for help, changes everything. Married to SS officer Gerhardt Schlick, Kristine sees the dark tides turning and fears her husband views their daughter, Amelie, deaf since birth, as a blight on his Aryan bloodline. Once courted by Schlick, Rachel knows he’s as dangerous as the swastikas that hang like ebony spiders from every government building in Berlin. She fears her father’s files may hold answers about Hitler’s plans for others, like Amelie, whom the regime deems “unworthy of life.” She risks searching his classified documents only to uncover shocking secrets about her own history and a family she’s never known. Now hunted by the SS, Rachel turns to Jason Young—a driven, disarming American journalist and unlikely ally—who connects her to the resistance and to controversial theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Forced into hiding, Rachel’s every ideal is challenged as she and Jason walk a knife’s edge, risking their lives—and asking others to do the same—for those they barely know but come to love.

Berlin at War by Roger Moorhouse Summary

The gripping story of civilian life in Berlin during World War II -- these "complex, often deeply morally compromised personal stories of many survivors [produce] new insights into the way ordinary Berliners tried to escape the disastrous ill-fortune of living in the belly of the beast" (Financial Times). In Berlin at War, acclaimed historian Roger Moorhouse provides a magnificent and detailed portrait of everyday life at the epicenter of the Third Reich. Berlin was the stage upon which the rise and fall of the Third Reich was most visibly played out. It was the backdrop for the most lavish Nazi ceremonies, the site of Albert Speer's grandiose plans for a new "world metropolis," and the scene of the final climactic battle to defeat Nazism. Berlin was the place where Hitler's empire ultimately meet its end, but it suffered mightily through the war as well; not only was the city subjected to the full wrath of the Soviet ground offensive and siege in 1945, but it also found itself a prime target for the air war, attracting more raids, more aircraft, and more tonnage than any other German city. Combining groundbreaking research with a gripping narrative, Moorhouse brings all of the complexity and chaos of wartime Berlin to life. Berlin at War is the incredible story of the city-and people-that saw the whole of this epic conflict, from start to finish.

Seeing the Power of God by Sidney St. James Summary

God's Word is a fiery, exploding, all-pervading, and living message that should cause us all to fall down to the ground and tremble… yet that is rarely the experience for so many dispirited people of God! Some people believe questioning the Bible, the direction God is going, or even God himself, is blasphemy. Some think it's a sign of disbelief. Daniel Thornton believes his son, Rusty Thornton, is lost without God and takes him to a faraway place in the early 1950s near Spicewood, Texas where he would never come in contact with people. He has an old King James Version of the Bible and begins to try and cure his son's affliction of skepticism. Rusty Thornton remembered nothing before his eighteenth birthday. The first book he read after learning to read and write was on Hinduism. His father didn't know how such a book ended up in his library. He took it and hid it from his son but not until he had read it from cover to cover. Was it too late for his son? Did what he learned about Vishnu and Krishna absorb his entire thought process where he never recognized Jesus Christ as the one and only son of God? Who's right, Daniel Thornton or his son? Rusty questioned his ability to communicate with animals. Was it a God-given talent? Why can't he remember anything in his life before his eighteenth birthday? Who is his cousin, Carolyn Thornton who comes strangely into his life on his twenty-first birthday? Who is the stranger, Billy Joe Briscoe, who is hired to become Rusty's companion and teach him about Jesus Christ and the Bible? "Is it wrong for Christians to Question God?" One should not ask a question of the Lord because they think they know better than Him. One should never question God's authority, a big No, No! We should never ask questions of God to try and stall our obedience to the Lord. If we are questioning the scriptures in the Bible because we desperately want to know the answer we are searching for, then that should be okay. In the mind and thoughts of Rusty Thornton, it is perfectly fine to do so! Snippets from Seeing the Power of God: "My father taught me that God is merciful and caring for all human beings. Yet what I read in the Bible here," he turns a few more pages, "can hardly be so if this is true." He stopped turning the pages at the Book of Joshua and began reading aloud, "Jericho is shut up. God instructed Joshua how to besiege it!" He paused a moment, torn by conflicting emotions. "Does that make any sense to you, Billy Joe? It causes me to have grave concern over God's plans. If he is for sure the Creator of all things, how could he possibly instruct one of his own human beings, his own creation, to besiege a city that's filled with others of his creation and kill men, women, children, and animals… all his creations?" *** "Let me ask it this way of you, Billy Joe. If God has the power to take out Satan and love us, why doesn't he do it? Why did the Lord have to come down and die on the cross to save us from the grasp of Satan who was a creation and subject of God in the first place? Why does Satan still exist if he has disobeyed God more than anyone else?" *** Rusty Thornton wanted to know what someone who died saw in the afterlife. "Many say," Billy Joe jumps in and mixes up the conversation, "that when you die, you will meet a skeleton holding a scythe. Some say you go to Heaven. Some say you go to Hell. Others say you are reincarnated or that you turn into a ghost. Some even say that you sleep for all eternity. The problem with death, my dear friend, is that we will never know until after we die."
