Summary:

Without a doubt this classic piece of work shaped my life in various ways. I cannot emphasize how positive Anne Shirley is as a character. She is a heroine who is not only beautiful (spirit) but extremely intelligent. The most drastically different aspect of the novel is the fact that the romantic male character, Gilbert, gestures to the idea that 'being smart is better than being pretty'. How often spoken or written are those words? I believe that phrase is something young girls must recognize as well as understand in life. For beauty is fleeting and knowledge is eternal. Timeless and pure, I suggest this novel for anyone who loves a bit of comedy, romance, intrigue, and pure fun.Enjoy! See if you can stop reading them once you have started!!! I asure you that you'll spend hours of enjoyment with them.

Summary:

Chronicles of Avonlea is a collection of short stories by L. M. Montgomery, related to the Anne of Green Gables series. It features an abundance of stories relating to the fictional Canadian village of Avonlea, and was first published in 1912. Sometimes marketed as a book in the Anne Shirley series, Anne plays only a minor role in the book: out of the 12 stories in the collection, she stars in only one ("The Hurrying of Ludovic"), and has a small supporting role in another ("The Courting of Prissy Strong"). She is otherwise only briefly mentioned in passing in five other stories: "Each in His Own Tongue", '"Little Joscelyn"', "The Winning of Lucinda", '"Quarantine at Alexander Abraham's" and "The End of a Quarrel". Other Avonlea residents from the Anne series are also referenced in passing, including Marilla Cuthbert and Mrs. Rachel Lynde. As well, there are brief appearances made by Diana Barry, the Reverend Mr. Allan, and his wife. Alice Penhallow from "The Winning of Lucinda" would be mentioned later in Anne of the Island; in fact, the wedding of Alice Penhallow that Anne mentions she will be attending in chapter XLI of Anne of the Island is the setting for the story "The Winning of Lucinda". The Penhallow family are also the central characters of Montgomery's later novel A Tangled Web, though these Penhallows would appear to be a different branch of the family. The majority of stories, though, are about residents of Avonlea (and surrounding towns) who are never mentioned in the Anne novels. One reason for this is that most of the short stories in this volume were written and published by Montgomery in various magazines before Anne of Green Gables was even conceived. With the great success of Anne of Green Gables in 1908 and the sequel Anne of Avonlea in 1909, Montgomery was under pressure from her publisher to deliver more stories about Anne. Accordingly, she reworked the settings of several previously published non-Avonlea stories to incorporate references to Avonlea, as well as inserting several references to Anne Shirley and some of the town's other characters. The whole was then marketed as a new companion book to the Anne series. "The Hurrying of Ludovic" Anne Shirley is behind Ludovic Speed's proposal to Theodora Dix after their very long courtship. "Old Lady Lloyd" Old Lady Lloyd, thought to be very rich, encounters the daughter of her former beau and tries to help her. "Each in His Own Tongue" Reverend Stephen Leonard attempts to stifle his son Felix's gifted violin-playing, which he sees as unholy. "Little Joscelyn" Aunty Nan hears of Joscelyn Burnett's return to Prince Edward Island and greatly desires to hear her old friend sing. "The Winning of Lucinda" Lucinda and Romney Penhallow's longtime feud is resolved. "Old Man Shaw's Girl" Mrs Peter Blewett attempts to destroy Old Man Shaw's hopes regarding the return of his beloved daughter Sara ("Blossom"). "Aunt Olivia's Beau" Olivia Sterling is courted by Malcolm McPherson. "Quarantine at Alexander Abraham's" Severe man-hater Angelina "Peter" MacPherson is quarantined for smallpox with Alexander Abraham Bennett, a misogynist who has not allowed a woman in his house

Summary:

Presenting the Large Print edition of Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery. Also available from Golding Books is The Essential L. M. Montgomery: Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, and Anne's House of Dreams with an introduction by Nicholas Tamblyn, and illustrations by Katherine Eglund, as well as Anne of Green Gables in a Large Print edition. The character of Anne Shirley, first appearing in Anne of Green Gables (1908), has become beloved around the world. She is a character for all seasons-romantic, imaginative, passionate, and sensitive, and therefore she is kind, loving, and creative at heart. She gains considerable knowledge over the years and, through that knowledge, becomes a teacher and a kind-hearted protector of others. As inescapable as the struggles and doubts of life can be, she chooses to be courageous in the face of daunting odds-this is why Anne Shirley will always be one of the most affectionately admired of literary companions. A feel-good novel (or collection of them along with other stories) in the truest sense, Anne's adventures are not merely young adult fiction or children's classics or girls fiction (as some of the marketability or book design might suggest), and their popularity around the world and with people of different ages shares the truth of this. Anne is a strong female lead with a truly soft side, and her coming of age story (particularly in Anne of Green Gables, but further in Anne of Avonlea and the others) will appeal to the better nature of all readers, young and old. L. M. Montgomery's classics of Canadian fiction and North American literature present a strong female protagonist, but the feminist message of the story speaks to common human experience and a meaningful and powerful humanist literature. Unique among vital large print books for children (including large print childrens books for visually impaired readers) and large print inspirational books for readers of all ages, Anne of Avonlea large print edition in paperback is an unforgettable and moving addition to every library. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton on the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island in 1874. She felt that her lonely childhood and the creation of many imaginary friends developed her artistic expression. Writing as L. M. Montgomery, she published 20 novels and hundreds of short stories and poems, but she is most celebrated as the author of the Prince Edward Island-set Anne of Green Gables (1908) and its numerous sequels (the lead character Anne Shirley appears in a major role in six books and in a lesser role in three other books and two collections of short stories). In 1935, Montgomery was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. She died in Toronto in 1942.

Summary:

The recent 100 year anniversary of the first publication of L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables has inspired renewed interest in one of Canada's most beloved fictional icons. The international appeal of the red-haired orphan has not diminished over the past century, and the cultural meanings of her story continue to grow and change. The original essays in Anne's World offer fresh and timely approaches to issues of culture, identity, health, and globalization as they apply to Montgomery's famous character and to today's readers. In conversation with each other and with the work of previous experts, the contributors to Anne's World discuss topics as diverse as Anne in fashion, the global industry surrounding Anne, how the novel can be used as a tool to counteract depression, and the possibility that Anne suffers from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Anne in translation and its adaptation for film and television are also considered. By establishing new ways to examine one of popular culture's most beloved characters, the essays of Anne's World demonstrate the timeless and ongoing appeal of L.M. Montgomery's writing.
