Summary:

in a confrontation with his past, the author reveals this heart-wrenching depiction of childhood in a New York City multicultural orphanage during the nineteen fifties.Funds were scarce and discipline severe. He describes the relationships between the orphans, the counselors, the nuns, and the priests, with an emphasis on how it shaped his life.As he grows and moves through various houses into his teenage years, the orphanage is faced with a surge of gang members. He befriends a Puerto Rican his own age, which ultimately leads them both to follow his friend’s brother, a heroin pusher and addict, into Spanish Harlem just at the beginning of the civil rights movement. His account entails descriptions of ghetto life there and in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg district as well, underlining the devastating effects from the separation of his Irish-American family and siblings. While awaiting his next group of students in an empty classroom in South Korea, Walter James attempted to remember his past in an orphanage. The experiences that surfaced put him in a rage.He knew then that he had to confront his past and exorcize his demons.his book, which began as a psychological self-study, became the emotional account of his story, and took him to places he never thought he would visit again.

Summary:

As humans we incarnate and evolve through our experiences. We become independent beings capable of willing, feeling and thinking. We can interact, make decisions, judge and find our own truth, identity and uniqueness. But how and why do we do this? We can compare our self creation to making a cake. The basic ingredients for the making of a cake are the same, but they are also always different. The flour may be milled from wheat grown in different parts of the world, the eggs may be laid by different hens and the butter made from milk taken from different cows. These ingredients can be compared to our, inheritance - our start in life - our genetic make up, parents, culture etc. where there is always variation in color, type, size etc. How the ingredients are put together has a profound affect on the final result. The cook, making a cake, can be likened to our experiencing and all the information that we sense and take in to mix together. Baking the cake is like our processing when we program our experiences to create our willing, feeling and thinking. The result is ourselves - just like a cake, which we can eat, throw away or leave to go mouldy. We can enjoy or dislike the result. This is us, our creation to be as we will. Our autobiography is about our evolution and how we sense and program ourselves. How we develop our willing, feeling and thinking to create our soul. This process is unique to human life and enables us to become conscious of the most important part of our being. It is the reason for our existence - to be consciousness of spirit. We can only achieve this through creating ourselves.

Summary:

Joseph Bates was born in 1792 in Rochester, Massachusetts. At the age of fifteen, he accepted a job as a cabin boy aboard the Fanny, sailing from New York City to London. Thus began his career on the high seas, which culminated in Joseph becoming a respected ship captain. During one of his trips, Joseph read the Bible his wife had packed in his trunk and was converted. Thus set in motion his most important quest—developing a deeper understanding of Scripture and a deeper love for his Lord and Savior. In 1839 Bates accepted the teachings of William Miller. Then, months after the Great Disappointment, in the spring of 1845, Joseph accepted the seventh-day Sabbath truth. Consequently, he shared this good news with James and Ellen White, which resulted in his second career as a speaker, writer, and founding pioneer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which was formed in 1863. The Autobiography of Elder Joseph Bates provides an in-depth look into his childhood, his adventures traversing the ocean, his conversion and the reform movements he supported, and his study of Scripture and the biblical truths he discovered.
