Summary:
What is the place of a chaplain in medical care? How does chaplaincy fit into the psychological and physical spectrum of care in a medical setting? What words might more effectively express the need for chaplaincy involvement? What is the global goal of chaplaincy involvement, whether working with a patient of one's own religion, other religions, or those with no religious focus? How can a deeply religious chaplain effectively and honestly work with non-religious patients and/or family to provide a needed value? These questions are explored in depth in Chaplain Skanse’s new book, A Chaplain’s Expertise: The New Paradigm. In it, Chaplain Skanse seeks to develop a simpler, universal language to talk about spiritual care. Much is said about being spiritual and touching another person's life spiritually. What this means and how one actually does this in the crisis of medical uncertainty, without stepping on the autonomy of another person and/or their family, is explored with this new paradigm. Chaplain Skanse seeks to simplify the language of chaplaincy into a functional common language that allows patients, their families, the medical team, hospital administrators and even society at large to understand and converse with the chaplain. This language creates a more unified and effective response to the questions of what chaplains do beyond their own religious or denominational offerings and how can they speak about their value to everyone involved in the trauma of medical need. Whether one is exploring the field of chaplaincy for the first time or has worked in chaplaincy for a many years, this new perspective provides a framework from which everyone on the medical team can begin their evaluation with common goals for spiritual care.

Summary:
A Handbook of Chaplaincy Studies explores fundamental issues and critical questions in chaplaincy, spanning key areas of health care, the prison service, education and military chaplaincy. Leading authors and practitioners in the field present critical insight into the challenges and opportunities facing those providing professional spiritual care. From young men and women in the military and in custody, to the bedside of those experiencing life’s greatest traumas, this critical examination of the role played by the chaplain offers a fresh and informed understanding about faith and diversity in an increasingly secular society. An invaluable compendium of case-studies, academic reflection and critical enquiry, this handbook offers a fresh understanding of traditional, contemporary and innovative forms of spiritual practice as they are witnessed in the public sphere. Providing a wide-ranging appraisal of chaplaincy in an era of religious complexity and emergent spiritualities, this pioneering book is a major contribution to a relatively underdeveloped field and sets out how the phenomenon of chaplaincy can be better understood and its practice more robust and informed.

In these pages, readers will be motivated and challenged to pray and read the Bible more while also increasing their faith in God. Yet, it will also equip them to do Christian counseling, win spiritual warfare, perform funerals & weddings, become knowledgeable about CPR and First aid, how to relate to other cultures, what to do in a crisis situation, and so much more.

His blog began as an homage to a friend killed on duty in Iraq and quickly became a source of information about what was really happening in Afghanistan and Iraq. In The Blog of War Burden presents selections from some of the best of the military blogs, the purest account of the many voices of this war. This is the first real-time history of a war, a history written even as the war continues. It offers a glimpse into the full range of military experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, from the decision to enlist right through to homecoming. There are powerful stories of soldiers in combat, touching reflections on helping local victims of terror and war, pulse-racing accounts of med-evac units and hospitals, and heartbreaking chronicles of spouses who must cope when a loved one has paid the ultimate price. The Blog of War provides an uncensored, intimate, and authentic version of life in the war zone. From a blissful and innocent childhood years in Lahaina, Maui during World War II to the Vietnam War and to terminal patients in healthcare settings, the author presents an autobiographical pilgrimage. The fear of his own death in Vietnam and the befriending of a catatonic female patient in a psychiatric institution became the catalyst for his psychological, emotional and spiritual growth. The experiential knowledge enabled him to work in the healthcare field as a Hospital Chaplain. With his knowledge of the dynamics of critically ill and terminal patients, doctor and patient protocol, and medical bio-ethics, he was able to avoid an unnecessary open heart surgery during a vacation trip to Memphis. His pilgrimage continues through his senior years to redeem the God given time he is privileged to enjoy and acknowledge that life is worthwhile at every age. He continues to sing with the Psalmist, "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24 (NIV)

Summary:
What effect does religion have on physical and mental health? In answering this question, this book reviews and discusses research on the relationship between religion and a variety of mental and physical health outcomes, including depression and anxiety; heart disease, stroke, and cancer; and health related behaviors such as smoking and substance abuse. The authors examine the positive and negative effects of religion on health throughout the life span, from childhood to old age. Based on their findings, they build theoretical models illustrating the behavioral, psychological, social, and physiological pathways through which religion may influence health. The authors also review research on the impact of religious affiliation, belief, and practice on the use of health services and compliance with medical treatment. In conclusion, they discuss the clinical relevance of their findings and make recommendations for future research priorities. Offering the first comprehensive examination of its topic, this volume is an indispensable resource for research scientists, health professionals, public policy makers, and anyone interested in the relationship between religion and health.

Summary:
Published between 1862 and 1932, and reissued here in multiple parts, this monumental calendar of documents remains an essential starting point for the serious study of Tudor history. An experienced editor of historical texts, John Sherren Brewer (1809-79) had no prior training in the history of the period, yet he brought to the project the necessary industriousness and an impeccable command of Latin. Four volumes appeared before his death, whereupon James Gairdner (1828-1912), his former assistant, took up the editorial reins. Continuing Brewer's method of ordering chronologically all available documents from 1509 to 1547, and reproducing some passages while paraphrasing or omitting others, Gairdner brought the project to its conclusion, aided himself by R. H. Brodie (1859-1943) in preparing the later volumes. Part 1 of Volume 3 (1867) covers the period from January 1519 to June 1521.

Each story is a unique picture of how God works in the lives of every one of us if we are open to His leading.

Summary:
The Nautical Magazine first appeared in 1832, and was published monthly well into the twenty-first century. It covers a wide range of subjects, including navigation, meteorology, technology and safety. An important resource for maritime historians, it also includes reports on military and scientific expeditions and on current affairs. The 1875 volume is again dominated by reports on the Merchant Shipping Bill and debates on seaworthiness, with the editor continuing to prefer 'personal responsibility' to 'Plimsolecisms' and 'grandmotherly supervision' by the government. Serials focus on the economies of the British colonies, Atlantic shipping lines and emigration to South America, but fiction no longer features. Other topics include the opening of the Royal Naval Museum at Greenwich, innovations such as steel hawsers and desalination apparatus for producing drinking water, a proposal for generating power from wave action, and suggestions for using rats as a tasty and economical food source.

Summary:
And Moses passed to the ages and the mantle of leadership fell to Joshua. Joshua, the Jewish general, led the Israelites to victory after victory. Eventually, they too were scattered to the four corners of the earth. It wasnt until the American Civil War that the Jews left the north in droves to fight for the Confederacy. Not because they believed in slavery, but the anti-Semitism they had experienced in the north would not allow them to live as equal citizens. In the South, after a two-thousand year exile the Jews once again fought as a people for freedom and equality. Read about the four Jews in Jefferson Davis cabinet. Read about the Jewish military leaders and soldiers. Read about those, the remnant of the ones murdered, burned at the stake, forced to convert, and how they came into their own in the antebellum South.

Summary:
This book is the culmination of a lifetime of experiences. Father James Lloyd has been a New York state licensed psychologist for 30 years with a PhD in psychology from NYU. He likes to say "I am half Russian Jew and half Irish but ALL Catholic. My parents were Vaudevillians and I was a classic 'dirty neck kid' from San Juan Hill in West Side Manhattan." As an adult, Lloyd spent time as a missionary in southern Africa, taught theology, was the rector of a seminary, and hosted an interview show on WNBC for 15 years. On his show, he interviewed a tremendous variety of celebrities, including Bill Buckley Jr., Mother Teresa, David Susskind and Jackie Gleason. He worked with divorced and separated Catholics, with widows and widowers. He preached missions in parishes, gave retreats to clergy, taught psychology on the undergraduate level and was the Director of the Graduate Division of Pastoral Counseling at Iona College for 20 years. Since retirement, he runs a weekly group for the Archdiocese of New York to help males who seek inner chastity in the face of their strong same sex attractions. He has seen miracles of God's grace in all aspects of life. This book presents a series of convictions about life and its meaning through the eyes of what he has seen of life. Each writing articulates his beliefs and a deeply personal view of the world as it stands today.

Summary:
"In August 1914, Robert J. Rider, aged twenty-five, was about to begin his third year of training for the ministry of the Wesleyan Methodist church, at Handsworth Theological College in Birmingham. Two months later he had enlisted with the First Birmingham Battalion, later termed the 14th Battalion, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. His superiors became aware of his clerical background, and in 1916 he was commissioned to serve as an army chaplain, and ministered to an artillery unit on the Western Front until his eventual demobilisation in 1919." "Reflections on the Battlefield is Rider's account of his experiences, and is derived from a typescript left to his descendants after he died in 1961. Broadly autobiographical, the text is unusual in that the author had experience of life both as a fighting soldier and subsequently as a non-combatant Christian minister, and was thus particularly exposed to the ambiguities of chaplaincy service on the battlefield. Written as a series of episodes presented in the third person, Rider's account is not so much a history as an attempt to convey the decency and humanity of the men he served with and ministered to, despite the brutalities, degradation and suffering of war. Reflections on the Battlefield thus provides us with a personal and valuable contribution to the debate about how the ethics of war were viewed from the World War I battlefield."--Jacket.

Summary:
Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). One line in the Prayer of St. Francis reads, “For it is in giving that we receive.” It is my belief and the intent of this book to emphasize these two points. As caregivers, we are to love as Jesus loves. This love is selfless and unconditional. When we love like this, the line from St. Francis’s prayer is fulfilled for us. It is in giving that we receive. As we grow in Jesus’ love, we find that we not only receive but receive far more than we give. I wrote this book to assist anyone involved in any type of ministry to realize in their lives this reciprocal nature of service to one another, and have enlisted the help of others with varied backgrounds in ministry to offer their assistance as well.
