Summary:

The Bible is full of stories of heroes and heroines, but the fact that we know how the stories end makes them appear more like fables than real-life stories. Living among us today, however, are Christian ladies who have faced many trials and tribulations. Like Bible heroines, they remain standing—strengthened in their faith, examples to all of us. The struggles these women have faced and the victories they have won are highlighted in this inspiring book in an attempt to encourage other Christian ladies in their daily walk with the Lord. This book is intended to be used as a Bible study, either for personal study or for group discussions. It is further given to help Christian women in their journey of spiritual growth and development. Review questions and practical activities, nestled within each chapter, are designed to give additional insights, provoke thought, and encourage application of the materials presented. Women love stories, especially stories with which they can identify. Some of the women in these stories are from among us and some are from other countries across the seas. These stories will grab you, encourage you, and, above all, underscore the fact that we all live by the choices we make.

Summary:

This book is based on an expert group meeting entitled 'Male Roles and Masculinities in the Perspective of a Culture of Peace', which was organised by UNESCO in Oslo, Norway in 1997, the first international discussion of the connections between men and masculinity and peace and war. The group consisted of researchers, activists, policy makers and administrators and the aim of the meeting was to formulate practical suggestions for change. Chapters in the book consist of both regional case studies and social science research on the connections of traditional masculinity and patriarchy to violence and peace building. The Culture of Peace initiatives in this book show how violence is ineffective, and the book contests the views in the socialisation of boy-children that aggressiveness, violence and force are an acceptable means of expression.

*Winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize* In 2009 Malala Yousafzai began writing a blog on BBC Urdu about life in the Swat Valley as the Taliban gained control, at times banning girls from attending school. When her identity was discovered, Malala began to appear in both Pakistani and international media, advocating the freedom to pursue education for all. In October 2012, gunmen boarded Malala's school bus and shot her in the face, a bullet passing through her head and into her shoulder. Remarkably, Malala survived the shooting. At a very young age, Malala Yousafzai has become a worldwide symbol of courage and hope. Her shooting has sparked a wave of solidarity across Pakistan, not to mention globally, for the right to education, freedom from terror and female emancipation.

Summary:

Iteration:Again documents and reflects upon a series of thirteen temporary public art commissions by twenty-one Australian and international artists that took place across Tasmania from September 18 to October 15, 2011. Produced by Contemporary Art Spaces Tasmania and David Cross, in conjunction with seven partner curators, Iteration:Again presents a compelling array of temporary artworks in largely unexpected places throughout Tasmania. Working to transform our experience of place for a moment in time, each commission seeks to address how temporary interventions or responses by artists to public sites, environments and buildings can serve to open up new ways of understanding Tasmania as a place with very complex cultural, social and spatial resonances. How it might be possible to introduce transformative elements that challenge the notion of a fixed or definitive artwork grounded in one location? By asking the artists to make four different chapters or 'iterations' over the course of a four-week period, David Cross challenged each practitioner to think through how change or processes of transition may function to make the art experience an unstable and contingent one. This idea of incorporating change into the work highlights a growing interest by artists in emphasizing art as a potentially theatrical or even fictive medium with the audience experiencing different moments or stages of encounter over a number of weeks. The idea provided for the possibility of narrative sequences, formal investigations, or temporal shifts that saw key additions or subtractions over time. Each commission sought to recast our understanding of public artwork from a discrete event or viewing experience, to a suite of experiences. The book includes sections on each project by the artists, including Ruben Santiago, Paul O'Neill, Maddie Leach and Toby Huddlestone, with a curatorial statement introducing the work and a commissioned response by thirteen Australian and international writers. It also features two major essays on key issues in temporary public art, including a curatorial essay by Cross and an essay on post-studio practice by noted public art scholar and curator Marco Marcon.

This is a non-fiction humor book on the trials and the (mild) triumphs of working in retail. According to The Wall Street Journal, roughly one of every 10 Americans is employed in the retail sector. This means 30 million of you readers will be able to relate to Macy's stories of agonized fitting room explosions and the horrors of the holidays. All stories are 100% true: every crazy, silly, disastrous, bumbling, lunatic story comes straight from the linoleum-covered racetrack of a major big-box retail store. With Chapters like, "Crazy Customers Make It All Worthwhile", "Returns, or Seriously? You're Really Returning This?", or "Loss Prevention, or Don't Steal! (But if You Do, You Won't Get Caught)", plus a bonus chapter on how to actually get what you want from bored, burnt-out, unmotivated retail employees. This is a laugh-out-loud, must-have manual for anyone who works - or shops - retail!

Summary:

This is a true story of the death of a child through homicide. It is about a mother's healing journey and the pivotal decisions she had to make in order to survive her son's death. It is about betrayal, and a shocking verdict but it's also about love, courage, and faith. It is hope for survival and inspiration for revival for those that are suffering a similar loss. "Unforgettable. The layers of grief are too exquisite for words but Sandra finds a way to the depth of her soul and describes the torment with such clarity ... you will not soon forget. Her haunting dreams will stay with you long after you have finished this extraordinary story of love, betrayal, courage, and hope. "Tiers of Sorrow" is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful true stories you will ever read." -Wayne Cooper, Author and Publisher / Levita Media "Sandra is on a mission. After the violent death of her young adult son, she has armed herself with weapons from another world. Sandra has discovered the keys to hope and wellbeing but not until after experiencing utter grief and pain herself. A wounded healer knows how to reach the hurting. She has traveled the journey of deep sorrow and injustice and has come through it with startling understanding and strength. I recommend this book to the professionals who help crime victims and their families but, mostly, this story has the power to minister to anyone who suffers the loss of a loved one from a shooting, stabbing, or violent crime." -Margaret Montreuil, Speaker and Author, God in Sandals, God with Us, His Kingdome Come, and coming soon, Come & See "Deeply moving yet chilling. Tiers of Sorrow compels the reader to set aside petty, insignificant differences with loved ones and cherish every moment as the gift it is. It demonstrates courage in the face of heart wrenching circumstances that inspires hope us all." -M. Ann Bruce, Author, Director, Producer

He must also find a way to revive his father's own long-dormant dreams, and convince his dad to join forces with him, before they can achieve together what neither would on his own.

Summary:

In early 1963, Jake Townley had very little to show for a man in his early 40s. His business efforts had not met with success and his family barely had enough food on the table. Yet, he placed his faith in the Lord. And once the Lord moved, a success story began to unfold and continues today - a story of overcoming - a story of encouragement - a story of tenacity - a story of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and Fire - a story of empowerment that leads to excellence - a story of love for family, the Savior and of the fellow man - a story of vision, staying power and grit, persistence, consistency and the value of work - a story of faith - and a story of blessing. Again, 50 years later, the faith operation component of Townley Engineering & Manufacturing Company is as strong as when Jake placed his foot on the sandy soils of East Lake Weir, Florida. And one man's stubborn faith has positively affected thousands of men, women and children in a number of communities across the United States and the world. If The Lord Wills, the future for the Townley Company and for its team of dedicated people will be a continuation of the faith journey which began 50 years ago. Toro Townley's outlook for the future is bright. "We have experienced monumental challenges in the past. We now have monumental opportunities in the future." This book is a written testament to the history of the Townley Company and its amazing journey thus far as the company prepares for the future.

Summary:

A neat chaos, an illusion where the main puppets are these seven billion people who populate the Earth, secretly guided by a small society named the Circle. This is Claire Baudin's world. The Baudins are one of the thirteen families that create the Circle, having a word to say in the way that the economy, politics or any development on the globe works or ever did. The Circle has always existed, like an image of God himself in the world; nobody knows how it started, not even Claire; everything is uncertain, covered in mystery. And just like the Circle, the Baudins have given generations after generations of men and women who have commanded over time the start of all the wars, the crisis, the historical periods. Everything was and still is their creation and they have obeyed the Circle's rule. Until now. Claire is an independent, twenty one year old girl who has just spread her wings and detached herself from her family, taking her sister with her and moving to the mansion bought for her my her grandfather. She, unlike all her whole family, is not ready to embrace the rules of her society. The way the world has been ruled without anyone knowing or approving it, the secrecy, the hunger which was placed in some parts of the globe, while others have been fed with gold, everything is repulsive for her; but most of all, she hates the idea of being forced to marry someone from her group just so that the legacy could continue its destiny only inside the Circle. She hates the thought of creating a marriage based on interests and not on true love, a frequent thing among all the thirteen families. She is almost sure she is going to be an abstinent, this is the only possibility she sees so she can get a part of the freedom she mostly desires. Until she meets Antoine. He is a normal boy, hired by the Circle, who has the ambition of becoming a great doctor in attempt to find a cure for his ill mother. She hasn't noticed him until one day when she decides to be nice to him for the secret purpose of defying the Circle just a little bit more. But what will happen when he will intrude on her life and affect her judgment?

Summary:

My Overdue Book: Too many stories not to tell: spells out the varied episodes in the life of a man who spent decades working in Hollywood. He began as a little boy in Cincinnati impressed early on by the broadcasting magic of radio and then TV in the middle of twentieth century America. His drive to get into broadcasting culminates in an early success that gets interrupted by an unexpected sidebar in The US Army and a subsequent tour as an Infantryman in Vietnam in the late 1960's. His yearlong excursion in "Fun City East," with its repeated life and death experiences, had lifelong effects on this soldier-of-media. Following his wanderings through the jungles of Vietnam, Bright's interactions with many of America's top public figures throughout his decades in radio and television come to life with intriguing stories that are personal, professional, positive and negative. It's life without a filter! Readers across generations will share and co-experience numerous real life feelings and emotions with writer Bright as his winding trail of life opens in front of them. book endorsement for peter bright; i always thought that peter bright and i had many things in common; we both grew up in ohio, we both had careers in the live event and variety side of television, and the few times we had times to talk i thought we shared a mutual philosophy toward the ups and downs of life. but it wasn't until i read his "overdue" book that i realized just what a rich and storied life peter has had and how much more deeply he had experienced the highs and lows, particularly during his years in the military, than i ever could have imagined. it really amazes me just how little we know about people we think we know, and just how much more we appreciate who they are when we are fortunate enough to have that background filled in by someone as articulate and able to express both facts and feelings as peter has in this book. when i started to read it, i thought all of those common events that we shared would be an interesting parallel track to my life and as such i would have a great frame of reference, but as i read on, i realized just what an amazing story peter has to tell and just how well he tells it. ken ehrlich, executive producer, the grammy awards

Summary:

The Courageous Cubs is a wonderful tale about 2 young lion cubs, personified as confused kids growing up in foster care or a home with conflicts. The main characters, Omar and Andy, are youthful lion cubs that come from a disrupted home. The story tells some of the day to day “adventures” that the two encounter in the foster care system, whether it be the living with and moving from family to family, or the visits they have with their biological or adoptive families. Never having the opportunity to develop an identity of their own, Omar and Andy are introduced to a great lion named Adonai. Adonai helps them in their quest for normalcy and a better life. “When you call me, I will come,Life will have a great outcome!A better day is on the way,So call on me, you'll be okay!” -- King Adonai Omar and Andy, are very much like other children that grow up in “the system”. They get angry, scared, confused, doubtful and hurt; and for good purpose. Who are they? Where do they belong? With whom do they belong? WHY? All that they want is a family to call their own. They want someone to love them, and care for them letting them know that there is a better life beyond the system. When there is no one available to these young cubs, they called upon Adonai who encourages them that life will still turn out okay! The Courageous Cubs is a wonderful tool for counselors, therapists, and foster families to use when a young, systemized child comes to them for help. They can relate to the frightening and confusing situation that Omar and Andy come upon in their lives. Each page can be read as a mini chapter and has a companion coloring page to go along with it.At first glance this book appears to be a children's book, however, adults will love reading it too! It may take them back to their own childhood experiences and make the way for inner healing and peace. Other adults, family members, educators and caseworkers may read it and become more aware of the challenges children in troubled homes face. Hopefully it will create a soft spot in your heart for these children.

Summary:

"I have often wondered if my disease was always there, lying dormant in the shadows, all those accidents explained away by my awkwardness, until it finally reared its ugly head in my twenties, when a lot of people are diagnosed with MS right in the prime of your life . I was having the time of my life , living large and working hard! It was the eighties all about disco and the Urban Cowboy and I was in Houston Texas and at that time it was as good as it gets !! The cowboy oil field guys were making "boo coo" money and tipped $100 bills like twenties ! It was a pervasive time, cocaine and pot was all over the place thanks to our Mexican neighbors Houston was flooded with the best and the rich Mexican business men that brought it over spent so much money it made the oil field millionaires look poor! I was working two jobs one at FMC Machinery and one at the Switch-lite bar. One gave me benefits and one gave me cash money. Life was good, I met my future husband was planning my wedding and I was finally growing up and getting it right! I quit the bar , the drugs and the "life" and got down to business with a great job and a bright future. Well that is not how it worked out. I was diagnosed back in 1982, which was like the dark ages of the disease. There were no MRI's, no drug therapies, and no real tools with which to deal with the disease. You were diagnosed and then adiosed !! No help , no support , no hope, so I was told. But I am a New Yorker !!! and we don't give up. I was raised to be tough and press on , so that is what I did. I had the luck to be in the Houston Medical Center and that was where a study was being conducted on MS, I found a neurologist that cared and went to great lengths to get me information, I networked with anyone that had any ties to the research that was going onand get me answers. I had the audacity to walk into Baylor college of Medicine and demand to talk to the doctor in charge of the research , I was fighting for my life as I saw it and this doctor was at the very least going to see me which he did ! . He gave me hope and allot of information. Finally I could participate in this disease and not just sit back and let it take me over."So I have to be grateful, I really do. For every hardship I have suffered, I can recount a blessing, as well. Life is all about your perspective. It's all in how you look at things."

Summary:

Humanity is a part of Nature, yet every thinking person at one time or another asks herself or himself, "How did we get here? What makes me different from the rest of Nature?" In The Course of Nature an artist and a scientist ask those questions with full respect for all contexts, both scientific and not. Amy Pollack's figures stand on their own as elegant summaries of one or another aspect of Nature and our place in it. Robert Pollack's one-page essays for each illustration lay out the underlying scientific issues along with the overarching moral context for these issues. Together the authors have created a door into Nature for the non-scientist, and a door into the separate question of what is right, for both the scientist and the rest of us.
