Summary:

This is a novel that offers information about the relationship that exists in the activities of the spirit on the two planes of life. Renewing his interest in our inner improvement, Andre Luiz tells the moving story of Amaro, Zulmira, Odila and other characters, recounting the events of their previous lives from the time of Brazil’s War with Paraguay (1864-1870) through the days of old Rio de Janeiro (early 1900s) . In its preface, Emmanuel assures us that “The basic pictures of the narrative are intimately familiar to us,” such as family dysfunctions, the torment of jealousy, and the daily struggle for moral progress. Each page of Between Heaven and Earth discloses new knowledge and emotions.

Summary:

The New York Times bestselling authors of Lessons from the Light offer a new and provocative understanding of heaven and how messages from the afterlife can assist you in the here and now. We live in a world of near-universal acceptance that once our lives on the earth come to an end we continue to a greater world. Whether that destination is called "Heaven," "Nirvana," or simply "The Other Side," tradition teaches us that there is, in most cases, a fairy-tale ending to life, a place where joy and harmony reigns supreme. Yet, as this book attests there is still more to heaven and earth than is dreamt of in our philosophies. George Anderson is considered by many to be the greatest medium living today. After more than 50 years of hearing from souls who have transitioned to the world hereafter, he is constantly reminded by those who have passed that our preconceived notions of this life—and the next—aren’t always accurate. The nine stories in this book illuminate times when unusual circumstances such as sudden death, unresolved emotions, abusive relationships, and painful family dynamics, make it necessary for the dead and the living to find new doors to healing. In session with Anderson, survivors and those who have passed meet again in encounters that are profound, bittersweet, highly-emotional and sometimes, downright, funny. What we learn is that there are little-known spiritual treasures—and lessons to be learned—about heaven and earth that can restore, revitalize, and make new what was once broken. Life Between Heaven and Earth is an inspiring, thought-provoking, path-changing work, one that affirms that no matter how complicated a circumstance is, resolution, peace and acceptance can be found in deep and remarkable ways.

Summary:

A much-overlooked aspect of the Gospel of Matthew is the theme of heaven and earth. Rather than being a reverential circumlocution for God, 'heaven' in Matthew is part of a highly developed discourse of heaven and earth language. Matthew's idiolectic way of using heaven language consists of four aspects: 1) a distinction in meaning between singular and plural forms of "ouranos"; 2) frequent use of the heaven and earth word pair; 3) regular reference to the Father in heaven; and 4) the recurrent use of the Matthean expression, kingdom of heaven. This book examines the historical precedents for each of these aspects and shows in Matthew how they serve one overriding theological purpose: to highlight the tension that currently exists between heaven and earth or God and humanity, while looking forward to its eschatological resolution.

Summary:

Romans 8:28 "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." In the middle of a treacherous storm, David Preston, determined on arriving home in time to witness the birth of his seventh child, rescues a young woman, Jessie, who is injured on the side of the road. Being a good Samaritan, he takes her home with him. He, being the seventh son of a seventh son, in his family line, he expected another son. However, to his family's surprise and delight, this birth delivered a set of twins, a boy and a girl. The boy is named Jonathon Baron, Biblical for the dove or peacemaker, and the girl is named Amanda Caron, Biblical for worthy of love and both prove to be gifts of God. The sons of the Preston clan each play a significant character role in their relationship to Jessie and the twins. The six older brothers are, oldest to youngest, Jarred (the healer), Adam (the teacher), Brendan (the strength), Damon (the protector), Hank (the challenged), and Jason (the wild spirit). The young woman is taken into the bosom of his family due to her injuries and apparent amnesia at the time of her rescue. As they get to know her, she becomes familiar. First, she assists Sarah with the care of the infants; however, her frustration of her amnesia sends her to another reality where her purpose becomes clear. She guides the twins on their spiritual journey from the baptism in the waters, through life choices of good versus evil, and the ultimate heart-wrenching pain of love and loss and obedience to God. In this novel, God is represented as a great white lion, magnificent and glorified, adorned in a beautiful, pure white light. In this first book, he is portrayed from a child's innocent viewpoint where God is a loving father and nurturer. Bo Donovan, the antagonist, is portrayed as Lucifer being cast out from heaven in a hail of meteors. This once innocent town is now plagued by this wealthy socialite. His family left this town centuries before, but with the twins, chosen by God, Mr. Donovan must return to even his playing field. He attempts to alter the Preston family's reputation and have the twins falter down from a good path to evil, sin. Jessie sees him for who he really is and tries desperately to open the eyes of the Prestons, but his charm and charisma makes her seem like it's a personal attack on him. The town church leader, Pastor John, holds the secret, which only he and Jessie know, about the origins of the town and its inhabitants, which neither must reveal at this time. Bo Donovan has two daughters and a granddaughter living with him. Mary is attracted to Damon and pursues him. Damon has fallen in love with Jessie, but this forbidden love must not be, and Jessie must turn down his advances. His love for her is too strong and although she loves him like a brother, she is not in love with him. This gives Bo an opportunity to further compromise Jessie and her relationship with the Prestons. Bo also has a nephew, DJ Kildaine, who works on the Preston Ranch at Roseland Manor. He becomes an informant to him regarding the events at the ranch. Although somewhat of a chauvinist at times, he is basically harmless and a bit dimwitted until Bo asks him to perform the ultimate act of murder. Will he do it? Or will he take on the wrath of Bo Donovan? The plot thickens until the final climatic decision--the decision that only Jessie can make. But will she be able to live with herself? And will the family's love for her turn to hate? In the end, someone will die. The true identity of Jessie will be revealed as the twins grow from babies to children on their way to young adulthood.

Summary:

In 1950 Tibet was invaded by China. Over the next ten years, many Tibetans fled to Nepal or India, and some escaped to Bhutan by making the climb over the Himalayan mountains. At that time Bhutan was a Buddhist monarchy, with barely half a million people, nearly every one of them a farmer. It was a country with a dynamic oral tradition and no written language, and with large expanses of unexplored and uninhabited land. No roads existed until the 1960s. The first tourists were allowed in limited numbers in 1974, and although more tourists are allowed today, the number is still controlled. Road construction is constant now, and television, the Internet, cell phones, and automobiles have arrived. Mary Peck visited Bhutan between 1999 and 2005, having heard about this country that had been closed to visitors until the 1970s. What drew me to Bhutan were stories about a country of more wilderness than cultivated or developed land, with a government that considers protection of those lands important, and a culture with reverence for the land and its resources, says Peck. She understood her visits as standing on a curve of timewith a way of life that had existed with very little change for generations still visible and yet able to see enormous change on the horizon. The book features over fifty duotone images taken by Peck of modern Bhutan that are a rare portrait of this society and landscape. Accompanied by essays by Peck and Dasho Karma Ura, this book is a beautiful representation of a country anchored by its past and brimming with hope for its future.

Summary:

This is a translation of one of the most influential and important books from Tibet in the modern era, a passionate indictment of Chinese policies and an eloquent analysis of protests that swept Tibet from March, 2008 - the 'Earth Rat' year according to the Tibetan calendar - as a re-awakening of Tibetan national consciousness and solidarity. The Division of Heaven and Earth was banned by the Chinese government on publication, and led to Shokdung being "disappeared" and imprisoned for nearly six months. This English translation is being made available for the first time since copies began to circulate underground in Tibet. The author, Tagyal -- who uses the pen name Shokdung, meaning "morning conch"-- one of Tibet's leading intellectuals, wrote his book in response to an unprecedented wave of bold demonstrations and expressions of Tibetan solidarity and national identity. In his foreword Matthew Akester, a Tibet specialist who translated this book into English, offers an account of the significance of these developments, which transformed the political landscape across the plateau and led to a sustained and violent crackdown by the Chinese authorities that continues to this day. Shokdung's book is regarded as the most daring and wide-ranging critique of China's policies in Tibet since the 10th Panchen

Summary:

This book is for anyone concerned with the meaning of our journey through Life. It is the story of a young man’s encounters with a Teacher of Truth – the ever present, ever hidden Way that supports Humanity. It is a testimony of the hopes, doubts, fears, thirst for knowledge and growth of a contemporary “Seeker”, played out against the backdrop of a provincial Italian town: A young boy’s sadness at his father’s early death prompts the first, unformed questions and yearnings to understand the mystery of life A young man’s faltering steps to encounter “spirituality” through Eastern disciplines A series of “coincidences” giving rise to extra-ordinary encounters with a Teacher of Truth, hidden, yet visible, “in” but not “of” the world It is a journey towards self-discovery and the Light that is in all of us, buried by our personalities and forgotten through our distractions and indifference. It is a journey towards the true Heart that, although almost forgotten, has never stopped calling. This book is testimony to the Teaching and to the Seeker’s experiences as a disciple and friend of an extraordinary Teacher, Alfredo, who represents and upholds the profound Work of the Way.

Summary:

A book by Judith Bing with illustrations by J. Bing and J. Brooke Harrington, with a Foreword by Richard Rogers. Across the Balkans ordinary people traditionally built chardaks, social spaces in their houses or separate structures nearby, always elevated and open to the outdoors, and according to folklore, places "between heaven and earth." This book, a celebration of Balkan architectural heritage, documents chardaks in text, photographs, and drawings, as a journey of discovery spanning from Croatia to Turkey. In exploring the architectural variations among chardaks from country to country, in a region of notable cultural complexity, the book touches upon history, geography, peoples, languages and folklore of the Balkans. This book is an outcome of 30 years of research and fieldwork on vernacular architecture in the Balkans.

Summary:

Between Heaven and Earth is a book inspired by the sacrifices of the men and women of the Armed Forces. We show our gratitude for these sacrifices, and sometimes we do not understand all the sacrifices. One sacrifice that helped inspire "Between Heaven and Earth" is the Mental Health sacrifice. Too many times these Mental Health sacrifices are unrecognized. These sacrifices are not just a burden for the service man or woman, but their families carry the burden alongside them. We were scheduled for an immediate medical evacuation mission, commonly referred to as med evac. Prior to this point we had completed a few med evac missions. After each medical evac mission I always had a sense of accomplishment. It gave me great pride to know that I was a small part of a chain to help these wounded warriors to return home. However, this med evac mission was like no other. We landed on a dirt airfield somewhere in northern Iraq, the first six patients walked on board and quietly sat. This was not that unusual since some airlifted patients had upper body injuries. At first glance they did not appear to have any visual signs of wounds. I had thought to myself that maybe they had some internal injuries. I had convinced myself they were in a great deal of pain because when they walked aboard the C-130 they avoided eye contact. After we landed at another airfield in Iraq was when I became aware that this med evac mission was like no other. A blue school bus had pulled behind the plane and around forty soldiers from the army boarded the plane. These forty patients all walked on the plane all avoiding eye contact. When the nurse handed me the patient manifest only twenty names were listed. She then handed me an additional passenger manifest with another twenty names or so. She seen the puzzled look on my face and explained that the twenty on the passenger manifest were battle buddies to help ensure the twenty some patients made it to Germany. The nurse than proceeded to tell me that all these medical evacuees were suffering mental illness and were returning state side. My first reaction was "cowards" I thought this to myself and shook my head as I closed the ramp on the C-130 and we left for Kuwait. The flight to Kuwait was not long at all, but I could not help but think these cowards wasted a mission that could have been better served in a different capacity. I was disappointed and disgusted by those men and women. The rest of the deployment I had not thought about or talked about this mission at all.A few weeks after returning from the middle east I began to suffer from what I know now was depression. I had no idea why I was feeling the way I did. I was sad almost all the time, I lost interest in things I once enjoyed. Everyday was a struggle just to get out of bed. I cried for no reason at all. I was afraid and embarrassed. It took me months until I had the courage to talk about it. I reached out to a friend of mine that I had known went through depression a few years ago. It was her compassion that help encourage me to seek help.Through my process of getting the healed, I often thought about this mission and thought more highly of those wounded warriors. Those patients on the flight did have internal wounds and they were in pain. I had to go through a similar experience before I could understand. Those brave men and women were not cowards. I feel guilty for ever thinking they were. I apologize to everyone suffering a form of mental illness. You are not weak, you are brave. Bartholomew's path into the armed service. Bartholomew's experience in basic training illustrates how military members make their first sacrifice when they leave their families. After basic training Bart is faced to chose how to spend his limited time home. With the love of his life Penelope or his family. Bart's journey from before flight school to his first deployment reinforces how no matter our path in life we do not walk alone.

Summary:

First published in its English translation during World War II in 1944, the first part of this book is composed of lectures originally delivered (in German) during the pre-war period, whilst the second part of the book represents author Franz Werfel’s present point of view, arriving at the difficult conclusion that “complete human detachment is the first psychological symptom of spirituality...” “The outstanding contribution of this book is its frank rejection of the materialistic philosophy and an emphasis in favor of the spiritual interpretation of life. There are beautiful passages written with characteristic artistry.”—Kirkus Review

Summary:

The movements in the Between Heaven and Earth practices are simple but energetically very powerful. By stimulating the flow of energy within the eight extraordinary meridians in the body. They set up a very strong and stable energy pattern within us, similar to the pattern found within galaxies, atoms and gyroscopes. This strong stable energy pattern makes us very resilient both physically and mentally, and able to cope with whatever life throws at us without being knocked out of balance. Activation of the extraordinary meridians also allows us to connect to the power of Heaven and the power of Earth, allowing this energy to flow through us, refreshing and cleansing our energy field. When our energy field is full and strong it forms a protective buffer, and developing skill with this allows us to interact more harmoniously with other people and the world around us. This book contains complete instructions and illustrations of how to practice the Between Heaven and Earth exercises, along with theory and practical explanations so that you can understand exactly what you are trying to achieve with each exercise and how each exercise works. The Between Heaven and Earth qigong practices are an excellent way to boost your energy and build health, strength, and resilience while gaining a practical understanding of the often misunderstood extraordinary meridians.
