Blood Relations by Summary

An Edgar Award Finalist from a writer who’s been compared to Michael Crichton, Alfred Hitchcock, and Raymond Chandler takes us to the most menacing core of California’s upper crust, a class of billionaires with more money than they could spend in eternity. Who is Claire Gravesend? So wonders PI Lee Crowe when he finds her dead, in a fine cocktail dress, on top of a Rolls Royce, in the most dangerous neighborhood in San Francisco. Claire’s mother, Olivia, is one of the richest people in California. She doesn’t believe the coroner: her daughter did not kill herself. Olivia hires Crowe, who—having just foiled a federal case against a cartel kingpin—is eager for distraction. But the questions about the Gravesend family pile up fast. First, the autopsy reveals round scars running down Claire’s spine, old marks Olivia won’t explain. Then, Crowe visits Claire’s Boston townhouse and has to fend off an armed intruder. Is it the Feds out for revenge? Or is this connected to the Gravesends? He leaves Boston afraid, but finds his way to Claire’s secret San Francisco pied-à-terre. It’s there that his questions come to a head. Sleeping in an upstairs bedroom, he finds Claire—her face, her hair, her scars—and as far as he can tell, she’s alive. And Crowe’s back at the start: Who is Claire Gravesend?

Blood Relations by Roger Wilkes Summary

In the early hours of 7th August 1985, five members of the Bamber family were shot dead with a .22-calibre Anschutz rifle. Sheila Caffell, who was known to have struggled with mental illness, was at first thought to have murdered her twin sons and adoptive parents and then to have turned the gun on herself. Forensic evidence, however, told a different story and raised such questions as how Sheila could have received two shots in an act of suicide. A year later it was Jeremy Bamber, the only survivor, who was convicted of the callous murders of his entire family. He is currently serving a life sentence, but continues to protest his innocence. In this the first full account of the case, Roger Wilkes bases his story around specially commissioned forensic research, personal interviews with Jeremy Bamber and previously undisclosed accounts and witness statements. Extraordinary and shocking, it is a story that would defy the imagination of fiction writers.

Blood Relations by Chris Knight Summary

The emergence of symbolic culture is generally linked with the development of the hunger-gatherer adaptation based on a sexual division of labor. This original and ingenious book presents a new theory of how this symbolic domain originated. Integrating perspectives of evolutionary biography and social anthropology within a Marxist framework, Chris Knight rejects the common assumption that human culture was a modified extension of primate behavior and argues instead that it was the product of an immense social, sexual, and political revolution initiated by women. Culture became established, says Knight, when evolving human females began to assert collective control over their own sexuality, refusing sex to all males except those who came to them with provisions. Women usually timed their ban on sexual relations with their periods of infertility while they were menstruating, and to the extent that their solidarity drew women together, these periods tended to occur in synchrony. The result was that every month with the onset of menstruation, sexual relations were ruptured in a collective, ritualistic way as the prelude to each successful hunting expedition. This ritual act was the means through which women motivated men not only to hunt but also to concentrate energies on bringing back the meat. Knight shows how this hypothesis sheds light on the roots of such cultural traditions as totemic rituals, incest and menstrual taboos, blood-sacrifice, and hunters’ atonement rites. Providing detailed ethnographic documentation, he also explains how Native American, Australian Aboriginal, and other magico-religious myths can be read as derivatives of the same symbolic logic.

Blood Relations by Barbara Parker Summary

The New York Times–bestselling author of the Suspicion series delivers an electrifying thriller of one man’s fight for justice that “may be her best yet” (Chicago Tribune). In his many years as a prosecutor in Miami, Sam Hagen has seen every kind of violence—and yet he still tries to make a difference. But his latest case is like nothing he’s dealt with before. A seventeen-year-old model claims she was raped in a South Beach nightclub VIP room by three of the city’s most influential men. Almost immediately, Sam is pressured to dismiss the case, and is soon trapped in a maelstrom of political influence, public opinion, and his desire to see justice done despite his own misgivings. But when Sam decides to prosecute, one of the accused is murdered. As he begins to crack under the strain of holding together both his case and his own family, Sam will have to confront a conspiracy of money, power, and final judgment. In this chilling novel of crime and redemption from a former Florida state prosecutor and the New York Times–bestselling author of the Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana legal thrillers, “the pace never flags from the opening to the knuckle-whitening finale” (Publishers Weekly).

Blood Relation by Eric Konigsberg Summary

A New Yorker writer investigates the life and career of his hit-man great-uncle and the impact on his family. Growing up in a household as generic as Midwestern Jews get, author Eric Konigsberg always wished there was something different about his family, something exotic and mysterious, even shocking. When he was sent off to boarding school, he learned from an ex-cop security guard that there was: His great-uncle Harold, in prison in upstate New York, was a legendary Mafia enforcer, suspected by the FBI of upwards of twenty murders. Konigsberg had uncovered a shameful, long-hidden family secret. His grandfather, a Jewish Horatio Alger story who had become a respected merchant through honesty and hard work, never spoke of his baby brother. When other relatives could be coaxed into talking about him, he wasn't "Kayo" Konigsberg, the "smartest hit man" and "toughest Jew" described by cops and associates; he was Uncle Heshy, the loudmouth nogoodnik and smalltime con, long since written off as dead. Intrigued, Konigsberg ignored his family's protests and arranged a meeting, which inspired the acclaimed New Yorker piece this book is based on. In Blood Relation, Konigsberg portrays Harold as a fascinating, paradoxical character: both brutal and winning, a cold-blooded killer and a larger-than-life charmer who taught himself to read as an adult and served as his own lawyer in two major trials, to riotous effect. Functioning by turns as Kayo's pursuer, jailhouse scribe, pawn, and antagonist, Konigsberg traces his great-uncle's checkered and outlandish life and investigates his impact on his family and others who crossed his path, weaving together strands of family, Jewish identity, justice, and post-war American history.

Blood Relations by J.P. Bowie Summary

In a time when vampires have gained civil rights and walk freely among humans, they must still overcome the factions who seek to take away those rights and return them to the role of the hated, and hunted. Rob Lydell employed by 'Blood Relations', a philanthropic group of wealthy businessmen, is asked to negotiate a meeting with Gabriel Torrance, a powerful vampire. The object of the meeting is to improve relationships between humans and vampires, who have recently gained civil liberties. Rob and Gabriel form a close relationship of their own, but not everyone is happy about vampire civil rights and Rob soon finds himself the target of attacks and threats, while the violence against vampires by members of so-called 'staker gangs' increases. As Rob and Gabriel's blood bond grows, they are startled to discover that the biggest danger they have to face may come from a power play within Blood Relations itself - not to mention some members of the Vampire Council who still regard humans as prey, rather than equals.

Blood Relations by Jes Battis Summary

The television series Buffy and Angel revolve around radical conceptions of family. Indeed, their coherence depends on the establishment of nontraditional families that admit vampires, demons, witches, werewolves, and other bizarre characters without censuring them for their peculiarities. This work argues that what makes these characters enduring and engaging is their critical family connections—for their most involved struggles occur not within the graveyard, but around the dinner table, just as the most challenging adversarial forces that they must face are not demons or vampires but the stuff of everyday life. What does “family” encompass within these two series? How does it relate to concepts of gender, sexuality, power and the supernatural as they emerge from the shows’ complex narratives? This book explores such questions. It also examines the “chosen family” (an idea marketed specifically by successful programs such as Friends and Sex in the City within the past ten years), juxtaposing it against various images of the fractured biological family displayed in both Buffy and Angel. Through eight chapters addressing various family-related aspects within both shows, this work plots the trajectory of this unstable notion of family, even as it is transformed, remediated, and rendered unrecognizable from a “family values” perspective by the unique and supernatural relationships that proliferate in Buffy and Angel.

Blood Relations by Rett MacPherson Summary

In Rett MacPherson's charming cozy mysteries, genealogist Torie O'Shea always seems to be right in the middle of it all in the goings-on in New Kassel, Missouri. When a drought hits the tiny river town and the depth of the mighty Mississippi lowers, Torie is one of the first on the scene to see what the water has revealed: the decades-old wreckage of a riverboat. Soon, the rumors that surrounded its sinking have resurfaced as well and are swirling all over town, most notably about the existence of a cache of diamonds thought to be on board that was never recovered. Before long, a trove of treasure seekers flocks to town, and inevitably, tragedy strikes amid the feverish competition of the treasure hunt. Meanwhile, Torie is staggered by another discovery---the existence of a half sister she never knew she had. Shocked and surprised, she looks around for a distraction, and decides to dig into what really caused the wreck, as well as the location of the missing diamonds. All in all, the combination of personal intrigue and cold-blooded murder makes Blood Relations a sparkling addition to a terrific mystery series.

Blood Relations by Jenny Bangham Summary

Blood is messy, dangerous, and charged with meaning. By following it as it circulates through people and institutions, Jenny Bangham explores the intimate connections between the early infrastructures of blood transfusion and the development of human genetics. Focusing on mid-twentieth-century Britain, Blood Relations connects histories of eugenics to the local politics of giving blood, showing how the exchange of blood carved out networks that made human populations into objects of medical surveillance and scientific research. Bangham reveals how biology was transformed by two world wars, how scientists have worked to define racial categories, and how the practices and rhetoric of public health made genetics into a human science. Today, genetics is a powerful authority on human health and identity, and Blood Relations helps us understand how this authority was achieved.

Blood Ties and the Native Son by Aksana Ismailbekova Summary

An anthropologist explores the politics and society of Kyrgyzstan through a study of one influential man’s life. A pioneering study of kinship, patronage, and politics in Central Asia, Blood Ties and the Native Son tells the story of the rise and fall of a man called Rahim, an influential and powerful patron in rural northern Kyrgyzstan, and of how his relations with clients and kin shaped the economic and social life of the region. Many observers of politics in post-Soviet Central Asia have assumed that corruption, nepotism, and patron-client relations would forestall democratization. Looking at the intersection of kinship ties with political patronage, Aksana Ismailbekova finds instead that this intertwining has in fact enabled democratization—both kinship and patronage develop apace with democracy, although patronage relations may stymie individual political opinion and action. “This book is an important contribution to a growing literature on Central Asian politics and society, and by complicating dominant narratives about the dangers of weak state institutions, Ismailbekova has much to offer to the broader research project on democratization and clientelism.” —Europe-Asia Studies

The Two Sides of the Business Family by Arist von Schlippe,Tom A. Rüsen,Torsten Groth Summary

This book focuses on a central success factor for family businesses: maintaining the decision-making ability over generations while not jeopardizing the business due to family conflict, inefficient governance structures, or lack of identification. The authors identify that this is not as easy as the endeavor to bring two social systems together with contradicting logic (family and business) leads to many dangerous pitfalls. This book presents outcomes of a unique research project in which family managers of eleven of the oldest and largest German family businesses, at least the fourth generation, met for more than three years on a regular basis and presented the essence of their family governance structures to each other and to the authors. It was a joint “learning journey” that admits identifying twelve core questions that these families had been answering to keep up the relationship between family and business successfully over generations. Obviously, there is no “right” answer to these questions. The key to success is rather engaging the families in a process to find out their own answers and make them aware of the “two sides”: being a family is different from being a business family.
