Born Bad by Andrew Vachss Summary

From a writer whose novels have been acclaimed for their unflinching exploration of evil comes a brilliant collection of short stories—some never before published—that distill dread back down to its essence—and inject it straight into the reader's back brain. Andrew Vachss might have scissored his characters from today's headlines: a stalker prowling around an anonymous high-rise; a serial killer whose transgressions reflect a childhood of hideous abuse; an inner-city gunman who is willing to take out a blockful of victims in order to win a moment of acceptance. Tautly written and endowed with murderous ironic spin, Born Bad plunges us into the hell that lies just outside our bedroom windows.

Born Bad by James Boyce Summary

"Original sin is the Western world's creation story." According to the Christian doctrine of original sin, humans are born inherently bad, and only through God's grace can they achieve salvation. In this captivating and controversial book, acclaimed historian James Boyce explores how this centuries–old concept has shaped the Western view of human nature right up to the present. Boyce traces a history of original sin from Adam and Eve, St. Augustine, and Martin Luther to Adam Smith, Sigmund Freud, and Richard Dawkins, and explores how each has contributed to shaping our conception of original sin. Boyce argues that despite the marked decline in church attendance in recent years, religious ideas of morality still very much underpin our modern secular society, regardless of our often being unaware of their origins. If today the specific doctrine has all but disappeared (even from churches), what remains is the distinctive discontent of Western people—the feelings of guilt and inadequacy associated not with doing wrong, but with being wrong. In addition to offering an innovative history of Christianity, Boyce offers new insights in to the creation of the West. Born Bad is the sweeping story of a controversial idea and the remarkable influence it still wields.

Born Bad by Meghan O'Flynn Summary

Born Bad meets Ash Park in an electrifying and darkly hilarious crime thriller that will keep you glued to the pages. A brilliant psychopath with a singular goal. A detective desperate to do the right thing—for once. What happens when their worlds collide? Poppy Pratt has spent years running from what she is. Pretending that her father wasn’t a prolific serial killer. Pretending that she doesn’t crave the stickiness of blood beneath her fingernails. Pretending to be normal. Now she’s finally free—if you don’t count the cheating husband she’s currently saddled with and the baby in her guts. It’s not so simple to murder your husband when you know you’ll be the prime suspect, but her new city boasts the highest rate of serial killers in the country. In a place like Ash Park, it should be easy to stay out of the spotlight. But when a friend is found dead, Poppy finds herself thrust onto the radar of the local police force. One detective in particular appears to have it out for her. Detective Petrosky has lost colleagues before, and he won’t allow this homicide to go by unresolved—he can’t afford to. Unlike Poppy, Petrosky doesn’t have the benefit of psychopathic numbness; he feels the guilt like a weight around his neck. If he screws up here, that weight might drag him down for good. A killer with no remorse. A detective with too much. Who will come out on top? Unputdownable. Unpredictable. A roller coaster of grit and emotion that cements O’Flynn’s place as one of the most talented thriller authors in recent history. If you liked Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects, Chelsea Cain’s Heartsick, or Dexter, you’ll love Born Bad.

But soon his extreme lifestyle led him to question what it means to sin and whether it could-or should-be cast in a different light. After all, if sin makes us human how wrong can it be?Now updated with a new Afterword by the author, Seven Deadly Sins is a brutally honest look "at a life that could have gone horribly wrong at any turn," and the soul-searching and self-discovery it took to set it right.

Wicked Sharp by Meghan O'Flynn Summary

A mountain hike with your serial killer father. Good Samaritans who aren’t as innocent as they appear. What could go wrong? Poppy Pratt is the perfect daughter. Agreeable. Highly intelligent. Most importantly, she’s excellent at keeping secrets—the kind of secrets that give other eleven-year-olds nightmares. Her father’s perfect too…on the outside. He smiles for the preacher, attends neighborhood barbecues, even bought textbooks for the entire school. In their little town, everyone sees a hero—not a serial killer. But Poppy still feels like the lies are thick enough to choke on. So when her father surprises her with a trip to the Tennessee mountains, she’s happy to escape the charade. But it isn’t long before the trip goes awry. Between the incoming thunderheads and a climbing accident, the woods feel less like a vacation and more like prison. Luckily, a pair of friendly strangers offers shelter from the storm. But the couple, with their secluded mountain home, aren’t as innocent as they first appear—it seems they know her father. And if they know him, really know him, they might relish the sight of blood as much as he does. And no killer wants to risk leaving a witness alive, no matter how perfect she might seem. But there’s always hope for a girl as smart as Poppy. She just has to be as sharp as her father. Fast-paced, electric, and barbed with nerve-shredding thrills, Wicked Sharp is exquisitely addictive—every page drags you deeper into the hidden world of serial killers. Fans of Dexter, Billy Summers, and Dark Places will love the Born Bad series.

Intended Victims by Meghan O'Flynn Summary

Like father, like daughter. Poppy never believed she’d be a married woman with a pet pug, but she’s enjoying it…as much as a suburban psychopath can enjoy anything. Of course, feelings are irrelevant. It’s actions that make you a good employee, a good friend, a good wife—her husband would never believe that she’s as numb inside as a dead tooth. And though the fact that she got her serial killer father locked away doesn’t speak well of her as a daughter, she’s content to remain hidden in his shadow. But when a local murder rocks her town, Poppy finds herself at the center of the investigation. Strangely, the lead detective is the same man who investigated her father, an Alabama sheriff who seems to have taken a job with the state police for the sole purpose of watching her. It doesn’t help when evidence from the local murder scene leads back to Poppy—someone is trying to frame her for a crime she didn’t commit. But Poppy won’t make that easy—no way is she ending up in prison like her father. And though her dad may have been a murderous psychopath, he was even more adept at manipulation. You don’t kill fifty people and still have the neighbors convinced you’re a great guy unless you’re an excellent faker. And he taught Poppy well. She’ll give this town something they’ll never see coming. Twisted, sharp as a blade, and addictively macabre, Intended Victims doesn’t let up—O’Flynn is a master of the unexpected. The Born Bad series is a guilty pleasure that will keep readers hooked from page one. For fans of Heartsick, Dark Places, and the Mr. Mercedes series.

Hidden Wounds by Meghan O'Flynn Summary

She’s not fragile like a poppy. She’s fragile like a bomb. Poppy Pratt isn’t sure whether it’s normal for a recently widowed psychopath to feel this level of rage, but she does know two things: Her husband is dead because of what she is. And she’s more dangerous than your average psychopath. She was eighteen when her father brutally murdered her boyfriend in their Alabama shed, but she was seven when the training started. Seven when she watched her serial-killer father hang a victim from a set of metal hooks. Seven when he first handed her the blade. Not that it bothered her; Poppy’s never been normal. Normal children can’t be accomplices. Normal children show signs of distress when asked to keep bloody secrets. But now those secrets are coming back to take the things Poppy cares about. There’s only one suspect who makes sense—only one that her late husband mentioned by name. Molly. The daughter of one of her father’s victims, the only other child who ever lived with them—a child her father might have groomed along with Poppy. A girl who vanished when they were kids. Poppy barely remembers the girl, but the tactics she’s using to rip Poppy’s life apart are undeniably her father’s. It seems Molly always knew more than she should have—she’s not normal either. And Poppy won’t let her past destroy her future. Now Poppy must go back to where it all began to find a girl who should be dead—a girl barely anyone knew existed in the first place. Her father trained Molly well, but he trained his own daughter better. Sometimes, what matters most is blood. Tense, tightly-focused, and brimming with corrosive wit, Hidden Wounds is absolutely addictive—every page is a gripping reminder of O’Flynn’s grasp on the thriller genre and the hidden psychology of serial killers. Fans of Claire MacKintosh, Chelsea Cain, and Gilly MacMillion will love Born Bad.

Deadly Words by Meghan O'Flynn Summary

“Brilliant, dark, and impossible to put down. O'Flynn masterfully crafts a twisted tale of buried secrets in Deadly Words. Poppy is unforgettable—unlike any character you've read before. This is storytelling at its finest, and will sit with you long after you've turned the final page.” ~Bestselling author Emerald O’Brien A friend once told me that the world needs psychopaths, but I’m not sold that the world needed my father. I only know that I did. Poppy Pratt was a teenager when she watched her father murder her boyfriend. Only a child when she made the call that would put her dad away for the rest of his life. She watched the sheriff lead him off, her father still laughing at the Alabama moon, his arms slick with Shawn’s blood. Eighteen years later, Poppy is a chiropractor with a thriving practice and a house in the Vermont suburbs. She even goes on the occasional date. So, when a mysterious stranger shows up at her house claiming that her father is stalking him, Poppy blows him off. Her dad is in prison—psychopath or not, he’s no threat. And though this man is writing a book about her dad, she can see no reason for anyone to go after him. But then Poppy receives an unmarked package, and her carefully constructed world begins to crumble. A severed ear would throw most anyone off their game. The stranger was right—it might not be her dad, but someone is watching, and they’re after Poppy, too. Could it be an angry family member of one of her father’s victims? An obsessed serial killer fan? But even when Poppy’s new author friend is viciously attacked, she can’t call the police. Shawn wasn’t her father’s only victim, and her stalker clearly knows enough to implicate her in her father’s crimes. It seems she’s destined to go down the same way her father did—with her hands covered in blood. The only question is whether she’ll be the one holding the knife. Skillful, addictive, and crackling with nerve-fraying tension, Deadly Words is a thrilling joyride straight into hell. And O’Flynn ensures that you’ll never want to leave. If you like Gillian Flynn and Gregg Olsen, you’ll love the Born Bad series.

The Sopranos by Franco Ricci Summary

Often hailed as one of the greatest television series of all time, The Sopranos is a product of its time, firmly embedded in the problems of post-industrial, post-ethnic America. In The Sopranos: Born under a Bad Sign, Franco Ricci examines the groundbreaking HBO series and its impact as a cultural phenomenon. Ricci demonstrates an encyclopedic knowledge of the series, the genre, and their social context in his analysis of the show’s complex themes and characters. He explores The Sopranos’ deep engagement with problems of race, class, gender, and identity, specifically in its portrayal of the Italian-American experience, consumer and media-driven society, and contemporary psychosocial issues. The series’ protagonist, Mafia boss and patriarch Tony Soprano, in many ways embodies the anxieties of our age. Focusing on Tony’s internal struggles and interactions with his therapist, family, and associates, Ricci traces this archetypal character’s existential conflicts and sheds light on his search for self, connection, and meaning. Comprehensive in scope and sophisticated in approach, The Sopranos: Born under a Bad Sign is richly rewarding reading for anyone with an interest in the popular television drama, both as entertainment and social commentary.

The Haunting of Hill House (Horror Classic) by Shirley Jackson Summary

This eBook has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Hill House is an 80 year-old mansion built by long-deceased Hugh Crain. The story concerns four main characters: Dr. John Montague, an investigator of the supernatural; Eleanor Vance, a shy young woman who resents having lived as a recluse caring for her demanding invalid mother; Theodora, a flamboyant, bohemian, possibly lesbian artist; and Luke Sanderson, the young heir to Hill House, who is also the host to the others. Dr. Montague hopes to find scientific evidence of the existence of the supernatural. He rents Hill House for a summer and invites as his guests several people whom he has chosen because of their past experience with paranormal events. Of these, only Eleanor and Theodora accept. All four of the inhabitants begin to experience strange events while in the house, including unseen noises and ghosts roaming the halls at night, strange writing on the walls and other unexplained events. Eleanor tends to experience phenomena to which the others are oblivious. At the same time, Eleanor may be losing touch with reality...A finalist for the National Book Award, The Haunting of Hill House is considered as one of the best literary ghost stories published during the 20th century, even by stalwarts like Stephen King. It has been made into two feature films, a TV series and a play. Jackson's novel relies on terror rather than horror to elicit emotion in the reader, utilizing complex relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the characters' psyches. A must read!

Born Under a Bad Sign by Max Razo Summary

Book Review A born-agains harrowing autobiography retraces his path from an emotionally impoverished childhood, through a successful criminal career and, finally, to the redemption of the confessional. Razo assures his reader that his story will be unembellished, with no false modesty or undue embarrassment, and after the first few pages, its clear he will keep his word. Razo begins his meditation with his earliest memories of growing up working-class in the dusty, sunny atmosphere of post-war San Diego. Despite the citys burgeoning diversity and sense of opportunity, his veteran fathers American Indian heritage runs the family into trouble and teaches Razo some early lessons on the harsh realities of American culture. Though his family does help keep him in school for a while, his mother and father are over-extended with Razo and his five sisters. Though the emotions run hot between his mother and fatherusually it seems between rage and a begrudging commitmentthere is little feeling left over for the children. Razo doesnt shirk from any topic and provides some unique insights into the awkward presexuality that develops between the members of such a large cloister of siblings, especially when there is only one male to go around. Its a brave choice and makes good on Razos promise of full disclosure. Through the machinations of poverty, prison, drugs and kung fu, Razo eventually impresses a major player with his martial arts and so finds himself one of Hells Angels and on his way toward an illicit seven-figure salary. These years arent overworked with analysis, and even when some regret seeps in, it seems a bit half-hearted (he was having fun, after all). The ragged emotions of such a life, though familiar territory in fiction and nonfiction alike, are still made interesting by their sheer detail and a narrative voice that isnt polished enough to hide the authors hell-bent and engaging character. Razos life is colorful to be sure, and he was even a successful off-roading champion for a spell, but the real interest is Razos unlikely negotiations of the mortal pitfalls of the drug trade amid so many murderedand murderousfriends. Skeptical readers will conclude the author was saved more by a plea deal than by holy intervention, but its Razos storyand there is no doubting that hes told it as he lived it. A harrowing, willful account of a life led hard and fast. -Kirkus Discoveries
