Summary:

Where is Pentecostal theology going in the 21st century? How does it address issues of spirituality, politics and justice? What does it have to offer the worldwide Church? These and other vital questions are explored here by leading Pentecostal theologians from the UK and the USA as they assess the challenges and opportunities facing Pentecostalism today. With stimulating contributions by Joel Edwards, Charlotte Johnson, Steven Land, Douglas Nelson, Phyllis Thompson and Keith Warrington, this book offers valuable guidance to church leaders and to students training for the ministry throughout the Pentecostal world. ‘There is passion and information here, advice for the present and hope for the future.’ William K. Kay, Institute for Pentecostal Theology, Regents Theological College ‘When we consider that one in four Christians are Pentecostals, this book is a “must” for all who are seeking to improve their knowledge of Pentecostal theology and recognize its distinctives.’ Bishop Dr Donald Bolt, New Testament Church of God England and Wales

Summary:

Bishops, Moderators, Apostles, Regional Ministers - the range of titles given to those who exercise some form of translocal oversight of Christian communities in contemporary Britain is wide indeed. Together they represent a spectrum of response to a range of dynamics that include biblical foundations, received church tradition, present felt needs and the demands of the wider cultural context of contemporary life. In 'Episkope,' Standing and Goodliff, together with experienced church leaders drawn from across the churches, establish the common foundations that inform our conversations about translocal ministry and map present models and experience of ecclesial oversight. Building on these shared insights a variety of themes are explored that might help the selection, training and deployment of translocal ministry be fit for purpose in the changing cultural context that faces twenty-first century Christian communities. With contributions from: Anne Hollinghurst on gender and oversight, Stephen Cottrell on oversight within the Anglican context Diane Tidball on oversight in the Baptist church Terry Virgo on oversight in new church streams David Muir on oversight within black majority churches Ian Mobsby on oversight in new monastic communities

Summary:

Scripting Pentecost explores and develops an analysis of worship and liturgy in Pentecostal and Charismatic traditions. Organized into three main sections, history, theology, and contemporary practice, the first section quarries the historical trajectories of classic Pentecostalism, the Charismatic movement, Third-Wave, and Oneness Pentecostalism. Particular attention is given to the liturgical approaches of some of the earliest leaders, including William J. Seymour, Alexander Boddy, and Aimee Semple McPherson. The second section, constructive theology, offers theological approaches to liturgical studies from Pentecostal and Charismatic perspectives. In this section the Pentecostal and Charismatic tradition is advanced and extended by an interaction with ecumenical sources. The third section, case studies in contemporary worship theology and practice, examines the actual performance of liturgy through selected global case studies chosen to reflect a diversity of ecclesial practice in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America and Oceania.

Summary:

What does a re-vision of the Charismatic/Pentecostal Spirit-empowered movement look like in the coming years of this millennium? The first century of this revival seems to attest that the Lord raised up the holiness and Pentecostal movements not only to be custodians of these distinctive truths, but the perpetuators of them as well. If any generation ceases to accentuate this emphasis, the movement likely will forfeit the right to be recognized as such. When the Pentecostal message is preached, published, and proclaimed through triumphant song, an atmosphere is sustained for people to experience anew and again the reality of salvation, holiness, charismata, wholeness, and hope. Such a revival will be biblically based, rationally sound, traditionally accurate, and experientially real. Spirit-Empowered Christianity in the 21st Century is an authoritative compilation of the presentations from thirty leaders in the Charismatic/Pentecostal movement given at the Empowered 21 Conference in Tulsa, OK, in April 2010. These chapters share emerging insights on how the next generation will handle the profound issues facing Christians within the Charismatic/Pentecostal movement in the 21st century. For example, one portion covers the topic of the 21st century renewal while another discusses how we can protect our Charismatic distinctive. Another portion will highlight Charismatic adaptations for reaching this present age, discussing issues of social and economic justice, prosperity and suffering, challenges to urban ministry, the future of the next generation, Oneness Pentecostalism, and missiological aims in North America.

Summary:

The essays in Working Against the Grain are linked in their attempt to outline a new vision for a liberative model of Christianity built upon the insights of Black Theology. Christianity has long remained something of a conundrum for Black and other oppressed peoples of the world. This global phenomenon has been both the cause of violence and oppression on the subjugated, dispossessed and marginalised peoples of the world, whilst conversely, being a source for counter-oppressive struggle. Black Christianity has sought to respond to the vicissitudes of life by seeking solace in the redemptive figure of Christ who has accompanied Black people in their ongoing struggles for human dignity and liberation. Black theology, working from within a largely Christian framework has sought to offer the much needed tools for this process of re-imaging human life, death and possibilities for a new world. This radical challenge has appeared of late, to have run into the sand as the continued rise of charismatic, conservative neo-Pentecostalism seems to have displaced whatever foothold Black theology once had in the theology and working practices of predominantly Diasporan African churches and faith communities. Working Against the Grain argues that a re-imagined Black theology can enable Christianity in particular, and Black Christian faith in general to recapture the radical intent of this globalized religious framework. It offers a radical Black theology that simultaneously seeks to empower marginalized and disenfranchised Black people alongside the need to challenge and inspire White power to see and act differently. Given its roots in education and theology this book is an essential text for all those interested in the pursuit of racial justice and other forms of anti-oppressive practice, both inside the church and beyond it. By attempting to re-imagine Black theology, Working Against the Grain begins to sketch a tentative terrain for the mapping of a new form of Christianity for the 21st century. A form of Christian faith built upon the insights of Black theology.

Summary:

In Journeying in the Wilderness, author Terri Martinson Elton observes that faith formation in the church setting is contextual, and multiple forces are coming together today to create seismic contextual changes at record speed. These changes are disrupting aspects of our lives, challenging assumptions, and dislodging personal and communal practices. For the church to take seriously its call to form faith in each generation, it must be attentive to current contextual realities. Elton places confessional understanding of faith in dialogue with five contextually altering forces in order to provide a pathway for congregations to reimagine faith formation in the midst of twenty-first-century realities. The use of stories, nontechnical language, and biblical perspectives make this work accessible for congregational leaders and others who seek to explore new directions in forming faith. Processes and practices are offered to help both leaders and congregations contextualize their approach to their particular settings. Each chapter includes leadership competencies, shared practices, and group discussion questions.

Summary:

Power, Poverty and Prayer: The Challenges of Poverty and Pluralism in African Christianity, 1960-1996 inquires into the role Christianity plays in African political and socio-economic life. Colonialism is over, but the drums of liberation are still throbbing. Christianity paved the way for colonialism, but also produced the champions of independence. What role, if any, is Christianity playing towards the Second Liberation of the continent? The author writes on a topic that is at the heart of the Second Liberation of Africa, analyzing the dialectics of power, poverty and prayer in post independence Africa in general.
