Summary:

The former mayor of Charlottesville delivers a vivid, first-person chronicle of the terror and mayhem of the August 2017 "Unite the Right" event, and shows how issues of extremism are affecting not just one city but the nation itself. The deadly invasion of Charlottesville, Virginia, by white nationalist militias in August 2017 is a microcosm of the challenges facing American democracy. No one is better placed to tell the story of what really happened, and to draw out its larger significance, than Michael Signer, then Charlottesville's mayor. Signer, a lawyer, historian, political theorist, and public servant, sets the events on the ground--the lead-up to August's "Unite the Right" rally, the days of the weekend itself, the aftermath-into the larger context of a country struggling to find its way through the sturm und drang of the Trump era. He confronts some of the most pressing questions of our moment. How do we: Reconcile free speech with the need for public order? Maintain the values of pragmatism, compromise, even simple civility, in a time of intensification of extremes on the right and the left? Address systemic racism through our public spaces and memorials? Do something about the widespread disaffection with institutions and a democracy that seems to be faltering and turning on itself? The siege of Charlottesville shows how easily our communities can be taken hostage by forces intent on destroying democratic norms and institutions. But Signer concludes with a stirring call for optimism, pointing out, with evidence drawn from Charlottesville and work it has spurred since, that even this tragedy contains an opportunity to bolster democracy from within and defend our very ability to govern.

Summary:

On 7th March 2004, former SAS soldier and mercenary Simon Mann prepared to take off from Harare International Airport with an aeroplane full of heavy weaponry and guns for hire. Their destination: the former Spanish colony of Equatorial Guinea. Their mission: to remove one of the most brutal dictators in Africa in a privately organised coup d'etat. The plot had the tacit approval of Western intelligence agencies and, according to Mann, the backing of a European government. Simon Mann had personally planned, overseen and won two wars in Angola and Sierra Leone. Everything should have gone right. Why, then, did it go so wrong? When Simon was released from five years' incarceration in two of Africa's toughest prisons, he made worldwide headlines. Since then, he has spoken to nobody about his experiences. Now, he is telling everything, including: * His belief that the CIA deliberately compromised the coup to court favour with Equatorial Guinea's President Obiang, in return for access to the country's vast oil resources. * How the British government approached Simon in the months preceeding the Iraq war, asking him to suggest ways in which a justified invasion of Iraq could be engineered. * The real story behind the involvement of Mark Thatcher in the coup plot * Simon will also tell of his pain when he had to tell his wife, Amanda, who gave birth to their fourth child while he was incarcerated, that he believed he would never be freed. This is Simon's remarkable first-hand account of his life: an account that will read like a thriller as it takes us into the world of mercenaries and spooks: of murky imternational politics, big oil and big bucks; of action, danger, love, despair and betrayal.

Summary:

Did the arms race of the 1930s cause the Second World War? In Cry Havoc, historian Joseph Maiolo shows, in rich and fascinating detail, how the deadly game of the arms race was played out in the decade prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. In this exhaustively researched account, he explores how nations reacted to the moves of their rivals, revealing the thinking of those making the key decisions—Hitler, Mussolini, Chamberlain, Stalin, Roosevelt—and the dilemmas of democratic leaders who seemed to be faced with a choice between defending their nations and preserving their democratic way of life. An unparalleled account of an era of extreme political tension, Cry Havoc shows how the interwar arms race shaped the outcome of World War II before the shooting even began.

Summary:

The interviews were incredible, and even more so with the rides-along with state troopers, deputies, and local police. As I sat in the passenger seat on some rides, and others at night in the back seat with arrested drivers and their cohorts, the world is totally different than TV or the movies. It is also very different than the assumptions reasonably educated people have about what law enforcement is about. The interviews will be one of the most colorful memories of writing this book and the most challenging material to convey in my teaching career. The middle of the book is given to several discussions about rage, bad weather driving, and other things as you can see in the table of contents. At times I will be getting in your face a little, and at other times you will read about the road as I see it. Many of you will have different viewpoints based on your experiences and personality. This is good. Make sure, however, you have reasonable counter thoughts and not just silly venting. The last part is a complete walkthrough of a multiple car crash. As you will read later it is a composite of real events, partly to disguise any real person or vehicle that can be identified, and also for educational purposes. Do know that it is a nothing held back experience; it is not intended to be shocking like some stupid movie. The walkthrough is as informative as it is real. It was tough to write and it is tough to read. Aside from the interviews, bits and pieces, and the walkthrough there is no singular direction through the book. Read in random access mode or in sequence. Either way, may "the road" now become what you choose to do with it.

Summary:

A "compact, engrossing narrative"* that vividly reimagines the events that led to the outbreak of the Civil War What separates historian Nelson D. Lankford's engaging examination of the causes of the Civil War from other books on the subject is its willingness to consider the alternative possibilities to history. Cry Havoc! recounts in riveting detail the small quirks of timing, character, and place that influenced the huge trajectory of events during eight critical weeks from Lincoln's inauguration through the explosion at Fort Sumter and the embattled president's response to it. It addresses the what-ifs, the might-have-beens, and the individual personalities that played into circumstances-a chain of indecisions and miscalculations, influenced by swollen vanity and wishful thinking-that gave shape to the dreadful conflict to come.

Summary:

This fictional story is based upon a mercenary operation in Mozambique where three ageing ex-soldiers were tasked to restore order in the area of the port of Maputo and railyard complex so that aid and commercial vessels could conduct their business. This war-ravaged country, which had seen a fifteen-year conflict between the factions of Frelimo and Renamo, was at an end, and had left a lawless and hopeless situation for the starving population. The story, beguiling yet spiced with startling scenes of horror and violence, is told with humour based upon the team's comradeship, where they operated in spartan conditions dealing with horrific situations until the completion of their contract, leaving them somewhat battered, but alive. The story ends with a suitable twist in the tale, and the question of whether they would ever do it again?

Summary:

A user’s guide to understanding contemporary free speech issues in the United States Americans today are confronted by a barrage of questions relating to their free speech freedoms. What are libel laws, and do they need to be changed to stop the press from lying? Does Colin Kaepernick have the right to take a knee? Can Saturday Night Live be punished for parody? While citizens are grappling with these questions, they generally have nowhere to turn to learn about the extent of their First Amendment rights. The Fight for Free Speech answers this call with an accessible, engaging user’s guide to free speech. Media lawyer Ian Rosenberg distills the spectrum of free speech law down to ten critical issues. Each chapter in this book focuses on a contemporary free speech question—from student walkouts for gun safety to Samantha Bee’s expletives, from Nazis marching in Charlottesville to the muting of adult film star Stormy Daniels— and then identifies, unpacks, and explains the key Supreme Court case that provides the answers. Together these fascinating stories create a practical framework for understanding where our free speech protections originated and how they can develop in the future. As people on all sides of the political spectrum are demanding their right to speak and be heard, The Fight for Free Speech is a handbook for combating authoritarianism, protecting our democracy, and bringing an understanding of free speech law to all.
