The Princess Bride by , Summary

William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests—for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love—that's thrilling and timeless. Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible—inconceivable, even—to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you'll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an “abridged” retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that's home to “Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions.”

A Book of Verses by William Ernest Henley Summary

This early work by William Ernest Henley was originally published in 1893 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'A Book of Verses' is an anthology of Henley's beautiful and moving poetry that includes the 'In Hospital' collection, the 'Life and Death' collection, and other ballades and sonnets. William Ernest Henley was born on 23rd August 1849, in Gloucester, England. In 1867, Henley passed the Oxford Local Schools Examination and set off to London to establish himself as a journalist. Unfortunately, his career was frequently interrupted by long stays in hospital due to a diseased right foot which he refused to have amputated. During a three year stay at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Henley wrote and published his collection of poetry 'In Hospital' (1875). This publication is noteworthy in particular for being some of the earliest examples of free verse written in England. Henley's best-remembered work is his poem "Invictus", written in 1888. It is a passionate and defiant poem, reportedly written as a demonstration of resilience following the amputation of his leg.

The Lost Gospel by Simcha Jacobovici,Barrie Wilson Summary

The mystery of a newly translated “gospel”—filled with startling revelations and fascinating detail about the life and times of Jesus—is now revealed in this ground-breaking follow-up to the New York Times bestseller The Jesus Family Tomb. Waiting to be rediscovered in the British Library is an ancient manuscript from early Christianity, copied by an anonymous monk. This document is at least 1,450 years old, possibly dating to the first century, but it has never been properly translated or decoded. Until now. Working with an expert team of translators and digital imaging experts, acclaimed authors Simcha Jacobovici and Barrie Wilson provide the first-ever translation, from Syriac into English, of this unique document, which tells the inside story of Jesus’ social, family and political life. The Lost Gospel takes readers on an unparalleled historical adventure through this paradigm-shifting text. What the authors eventually discover is as astounding as it is unexpected: the confirmation of Jesus’ marriage to Mary the Magdalene; the names of their two children; a previously unknown plot on Jesus’ life more than a decade prior to the crucifixion; an attempt to abduct Mary and kill the children; the politics behind the crucifixion; and a religious movement that antedates that of Paul’s—the Church of Mary the Magdalene. Part detective story, part modern adventure, The Lost Gospel reveals secrets that have been hiding in plain sight for millennia. Jacobovici and Wilson’s surprising discovery and vigorous scholarly research position this ancient text alongside the Dead Sea Scrolls and Gnostic writings as a pillar of our evolving understanding of the historical Jesus. A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick Summary

Set in a small Wisconsin farming and manufacturing town still crumbling a decade after the depression of the 1890s, A Reliable Wife tells the story of Ralph Truitt, a wealthy businessman who advertises for “a reliable wife” in newspapers across America. The woman he chooses, Catherine Land, describes herself as “a simple, honest woman,” but in truth she is both complex and devious—not the missionary’s daughter she claims to be in her letter to Truitt but a courtesan of great beauty, kept by men and haunted by a terrible past. Catherine’s plan in accepting the marriage offer is simple: she will win this man’s devotion, and then, ever so slowly, she will poison him and leave Wisconsin a wealthy widow. What she has not counted on, though, is the passion she finds in this seemingly solid, forthright man—a man who also harbours secrets and whose own past is far from pure. Filled with remarkable characters and drenched with colour and atmosphere, A Reliable Wife is a story of love and madness, longing and murder, played out in a world that seems to have gone temporarily off its axis.

Movements for Human Rights by David L. Brunsma,Keri Iyall Smith,Brian Gran Summary

How do people work together to advance human rights? Do people form groups to prevent human rights from being enforced? Why? In what ways do circumstances matter to the work of individuals collectively working to shape human rights practices? Human society is made of individuals within contexts—tectonic plates not of the earth’s crust but of groups and individuals who scrape and shift as we bump along, competing for scarce resources and getting along. These movements, large and small, are the products of actions individuals take in communities, within families and legal structures. These individuals are able to live longer, yet continue to remain vulnerable to dangers arising from the environment, substances, struggles for power, and a failure to understand that in most ways we are the same as our neighbors. Yet it is because we live together in layers of diverse communities that we want our ability to speak to be unhindered by others, use spirituality to help us understand ourselves and others, possess a space and objects that are ours alone, and join with groups that share our values and interests, including circumstances where we do not know who our fellow neighbor is. For this reason sociologists have identified the importance of movements and change in human societies. When we collaborate in groups, individuals can change the contours of their daily lives. Within this book you will find the building blocks for human rights in our communities. To understand why sometimes we enjoy human rights and other times we experience vulnerability and risk, sociologists seek to understand the individual within her context. Bringing together prominent sociologists to grapple with these questions, Movements for Human Rights: Locally and Globally, offers insights into the ways that people move for (and against) human rights.

The Woman with the Velvet Ribbon around her Neck (Urban Legend) by Drac Von Stoller Summary

Sam Edwards was a wealthy lonely man that lived all alone in his mansion. Sam was in his late forties and tired of not having a companion to share his wealth with. He decided he'd check out the bar scene and see if he could find a lady with the same interests as his. Sam hopped in his Rolls Royce not caring that it was a stormy night. Sam pulled into Mack's tavern, ready to find his dream lady. He grabbed his umbrella popped it open as he stepped out of his car and walked up to the door, shook the rain off of his umbrella underneath the canopy. He stepped inside the tavern that was filled with cigarette smoke, loud music, and laughter all around. Sam approached the bar, sat down, and the bartender said "What can I get for you?" Sam replied "I'll have a scotch whiskey on the rocks." The bartender replied "coming right up." As Sam was drinking his scotch whiskey, he noticed a very beautiful woman sitting alone in a corner table, crying. Sam asked the bartender for an extra glass of scotch whiskey. Sam brought his drinks over to where the woman was sitting, and said "Would it be alright if I sat beside you? I have no one to talk to." The woman replied "Sure, I too could use some company right now." The more Sam and the woman engaged in conversation, they both said "It's like I've known you all my life" and they both laughed and shared a kiss. Sam asked the woman if he could see her again and she said "Yes!" "Can I give you a ride home?" asked Sam. The woman just wept uncontrollably. Sam said "What's the matter?" She wiped the tears from her eyes and said "I don't have a place I call home." Sam said "Come into my arms." They embraced and before she could speak, Sam touched his fingers on her lips and said "If it's really that important to tell me, we can talk about it later." Sam and the woman got up from the table and left the tavern. Sam held his umbrella over her head keeping the rain away from her fragile body. He opened the passenger door so she could get in from the rain. They drove off through the stormy weather anticipating a night of passion. As they were driving Sam asked, "We've laughed and shared a kiss together, but you haven't told me your name?" "I'm sorry, my name is Melissa." "Well, Melissa, since you have no place to stay, it would be my pleasure if you could stay at my mansion, and if things get really serious between us maybe we could get married some day." "That sounds fine to me," replied Melissa. Melissa said "I'll stay, on one condition." "What would that be?" asked Sam. "Under no circumstances are you to remove my ribbon from my neck." Sam laughed and said "Are you serious?" "Yes, I'm dead serious. Now promise me you won't remove the ribbon around neck," said Melissa, in a serious voice. Sam replied, "Okay! Okay! I'll honor your wishes."
