The Subaltern by George Robert Gleig Summary

The Reverend Gleig was a famous military author of his day, a former officer in the British army, a commentator on military matters and a close relationship with the Iron Duke, Wellington. He wrote many works and articles including a biography of Wellington, a book based on his own experiences during the war of 1812 in America and editing the memoirs of a Chelsea pensioner. Originally published as a series of articles in Blackwoods Magazine, in the 1820s Reverend Gleig’s most famous novel, The Subaltern, was published as a book in its own right soon after going through numerous editions. It presents a slightly coloured and retouched memoir of Gleig’s own experiences in the Duke’s army in the Peninsular and the invasion of the South of France. Somewhat lighter in tone than some of the more gruesome memoirs written of the war, it is a fascinating read. Author- George Robert Gleig 1796-1888 (1844–1912)

The Wept of Wish-Ton-Wish by Cooper J.F. Summary

James Fenimore Cooper was a prolific and popular American writer of the first half of the 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Set in the seventeenth century on frontier land, The Wept of Wish-Ton-Wish is a fairly realistic story of the early American wilderness experience. Captain Mark Heathcote, a widower, decides to leave the Massachusetts Bay Colony and resettle in a fertile valley of the Connecticut Territory, not far from Fort Hartford. The new settlement is called Wish-Ton-Wish, a name which, the author claims, is the Indian term for whippoorwill.

The Wept of Wish-Ton-Wish by Cooper, James Summary

Notwithstanding there are so many striking and deeply interesting events in the early history of those from whom you derive your being, yet are there hundreds of other families in this country, whose traditions, though less accurately and minutely preserved than the little narrative you have submitted to my inspection, would supply the materials of many moving tales. You have every reason to exult in your descent, for, surely, if any man may claim to be a citizen and a proprietor in the Union, it is one, that, like yourself, can point to a line of ancestors whose origin is lost in the obscurity of time. You are truly an American. In your eyes, we of a brief century or two, must appear as little more than denizens quite recently admitted to the privilege of a residence. That you may continue to enjoy peace and happiness, in that land where your fathers so long flourished, is the sincere wish of your obliged friend,

Burn Unit by Barbara Ravage Summary

“A compelling blend of science, history and storytelling. Barbara Ravage has fashioned an enlightening, invaluable book.” —Stewart O'Nan, author of The Circus Fire: A True Story of an American TragedyThough each of us is just a spark away from being a burn victim, the public knows little and understands less about the world that patients inhabit. Pulling the curtains back on this private and sterile environment, Burn Unit is a riveting account of the frontline efforts—both modern-day and historical—to save lives devastated by fire. With unflinching urgency, Barbara Ravage follows an extraordinary team of healers at Massachusetts General Hospital, the cradle of modern burn treatment and the site of one of the best burn units in the world. From Boston's Cocoanut Grove fire of 1942 to the treatment of the victims of the Rhode Island nightclub fire in early 2003, we watch everyday heroes do their incredible but punishing work against the backdrop of history. Both a moving human drama and an engrossing scientific exploration of this little-known field of medicine, Burn Unit is an unforgettably powerful read.

Gardening Without Gloves by Roger Ladd Memmott Summary

GARDENING WITHOUT GLOVES Short Fiction - Literary/Mainstream What comes of Gardening Without Gloves? Read each of the twelve stories in this volume to find answers that you wouldnt expect. On one level Memmotts book is an excursion into the psychology of love, while on another level it voices the despair of love and relationships misunderstood. One story shows this weathered visage and another one that. The characters, in their own dangerous and diametrical ways, are overcome by the elusive, and sometimes disillusioning, expectations of love. Flawed by misapprehension, they are often left bereaved, puzzling only the ambiguities of love, or what they thought was love, and how it slipped away. There is energy here, the kind of sensual energy that is lacking from most fiction todaya fascinating piece of writing. Raymond Federman, author of Take It or Leave It ~ STORY SYNOPSES ~ AN OPTIONAL ILLUSION - In retrospect a young man witnesses the landscape of his youth and one particular event of infatuation and violence that stays with him like a tremor. WATERMELON TART - A neurotic woman who has undergone cosmetic surgery disguises herself and journeys by night to the arms of her lover. Not only is Camp New Leaf no ordinary camp, but it appears that the Tribe hasn't laid the past to rest, either. And what better place to catch up with an old member—or recruit a few new ones—than a secluded camp for "troubled" boys.
