Summary:

Imams and Emirs is a comparative study of Islamic sects in the modern Arab world. It spotlights the Sunnis, Shi'ites, Alawis, Druze, Ibadis, Zaidis, Yezidis, and Christian Maronites. The book uniquely examines not only issues of dogma, but also the ecological, historical and structural variables that differentiate a religion from a sect and a sect from a religious community or minority. This is the first time Islamic religious communities have been placed on a single comparative scale.

Summary:

This anthology of essays brings together original critical comments on Nigerian literatures written in the 1970s and 1980s. It is a celebration of Nigeria's contribution to the world's heritage of letters. The twenty-three essays in it explore the fundamental role of the intelligentsia in defining and describing the nation state in space and time. The contributions represent some of the best and most articulate assessments of Nigeria's literary discourses in their pre-colonial and colonial phases. The various ideological reflections in the essays reveal significant details about the intellectual and imaginative processes that have gone into the shaping of Nigeria over the centuries. The diversity of themes examined, the historical epochs covered and the geo-political spread of the contributors add to the uniqueness of the volume. Chinua Achebe, J.P. Clarke, Femi Osofisan and Kole Omotoso are amoung the 23 contributors included.

This extraordinary biography of the Algerian warrior and Sufi saint, Emir Abd el-Kader (1807/8-1883), shows his dazzling spiritual qualities in the fight against the French colonial authorities. The New York Times called the Emir “one of the few great men of the century,” while Abraham Lincoln and Pope Pius IX both commended the Emir for rescuing 15,000 Christians while in exile in Damascus. In 1846, the town of Elkader, Iowa was named in his honor.

Summary:

Drawing on both Arabic sources and British Foreign Office archive material, the author traces the expansion and consolidation of the Saudi state from the early years of the twentieth century. This process led to a series of border disputes which the Kuwait Conference attempted, but ultimately failed, to solve. The book opens with a description of the establishment of the Sultanate of Najd and its Dependencies, and the incorporation of Riyadh, al-Hasa, Ha'il and 'Asir. This process of expansion inevitably led to a redefinition of borders and to boundary problems. Relations between Britain, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Transjordan during the First World War are then discussed, in particular the contacts between Sherif Hussein of Mecca and McMahon, the British High Commissioner for Egypt. The relationship of the Sultanate of Najd with its neighbours is examined in the light of the positions adopted by Britain and the Ottoman Empire and as a backdrop to the Kuwait Conference. Finally, the author discusses both the preliminaries and the three stages of the conference, analysing the reasons for its failure. The book provides valuable back-ground material for all those who wish to understand the present-day state of Saudi Arabia and its relations with its neighbours.

Thus Ruled Emir Abbas is an important new research tool that reveals much about daily life in Kano, the wealthiest and most populous emirate of the African Sokoto Caliphate. It contains a selection of Kano Judicial Council documents, as well as their English translations, that deal with matters such as land disputes, tax collection disputes, and theft. These documents are invaluable resources that reveal much about Kano social, economic, and political life before the region came under the influence of colonial institutions, law, and language. This selection of records for more than 415 cases, along with their translations, will become essential reading for those interested in Nigeria’s past and will certainly become a standard work in the field of Nigerian history and anthropology.

Summary:

Veils, Turbans, and Islamic Reform in Northern Nigeria tells the story of Islamic reform from the perspective of dress, textile production, trade, and pilgrimage over the past 200 years. As Islamic reformers have sought to address societal problems such as poverty, inequality, ignorance, unemployment, extravagance, and corruption, they have used textiles as a means to express their religious positions on these concerns. Home first to the early indigo trade and later to a thriving textile industry, northern Nigeria has been a center for Islamic practice as well as a place where everything from women’s hijabs to turbans, buttons, zippers, short pants, and military uniforms offers a statement on Islam. Elisha P. Renne argues that awareness of material distinctions, religious ideology, and the political and economic contexts from which successive Islamic reform groups have emerged is important for understanding how people in northern Nigeria continue to seek a proper Islamic way of being in the world and how they imagine their futures—spiritually, economically, politically, and environmentally.

Summary:

For the world's one billion Muslims, Jesus is a prophet. A highly respected prophet, but one of many throughout history. For Christians, Jesus is more than a prophet. He alone is God incarnate, Lord and Savior. And therein lies the most profound difference between the two faiths. Based upon the authors' extensive dialogues and debates with skeptical, angry, and interested Muslims, liberal Christians, and mainstream journalists, More Than a Prophet answers nearly 150 questions about Islamic and Christian faith. Sympathetic to Muslim concerns yet uncompromising in its portrayal of historic Christian truth, More Than a Prophet is an indispensable handbook for Christians who want to share their faith with sensitivity and intellectual honesty. It is also a helpful introductory resource for those seeking to understand Jesus. - Back cover.
