Letting in the Light by , Summary

Letting in the Light is a book of poems, all of which I wrote between the ages of eighty and eighty-six. They seemed to emerge naturally, both from when I was forty-one years in the active ministry and from reflections and writings during retirement. You might say that poetry finally found me and has become the best way I know of putting into words some things Ive begun to learn. Writing poems has opened up the world in ways I hadnt expected. Its made me aware of connections to other people and to the earth, which is truly our mother. Letting in the Light is a book about discovering the holy in the ordinary, everyday experiences that come to all of us. Some have described my poems as accessible. I hope those who read them will find them of some help. They are offered by a fellow journeyer.

Letting in the dog by Patricia Blocker Summary

Communicating with and understanding dogs builds trusting relationships, relieves frustration, and improves lives at both ends of the leash. Apart from simply reading canine body language, this book explores the juncture between hearts and minds, where true understanding begins. Taking a light-hearted yet earnest approach to exploring how to connect with dogs, each chapter features amusing, thought-provoking anecdotes and much useful information, showing us how, by connecting with our dogs, we learn how to connect with ourselves. Finding the intersection between the academic and the spiritual for better communication with dogs leads to effective two-way conversation: how to talk with our dogs instead of talking at them. The intuitive side of communicating with canines in conjunction with the intellectual side is also investigated: in this space, we build trust, respect, and better relationships, and human and canine lives are enriched. Come walk with us on our journey ...

The Deep Heart by John J. Prendergast Summary

An experiential guide for exploring the convergence of psychological healing and spiritual awakening that happens most clearly and powerfully in the depths of the heart “The Deep Heart is what I call a living book, that rare gem of a book that is alive with the presence of its author . . . A book like this should be felt and experienced as much as it should be read.” —Adyashanti The great human quest is to discover who we really are—a discovery that changes our lives and the lives of those around us. With The Deep Heart, spiritual teacher and psychotherapist Dr. John J. Prendergast invites us on a pilgrimage within, using the heart as a portal to our deepest psychological and spiritual nature. The “deep heart” is Prendergast’s term for our heart center—a subtle center of emotional and energetic sensitivity, relational intimacy, profound inner knowing, and unconditional love. “The heart area is where we feel most deeply touched by kindness, gratitude, and appreciation, yet it is also where we feel most emotionally wounded,” writes Prendergast. “Whether we realize it or not, the heart is what we most carefully guard and most want to open.” Throughout The Deep Heart, Prendergast expertly combines the boundaried wisdom of psychotherapy with a spacious, embodied path to liberation, bringing attention to both the joys and pitfalls of each approach with the compassion of a friend who’s walked the path for decades. In this experiential guide, Prendergast invites you to tune into your inherent wisdom, love, and wholeness as you journey into the deep heart. Through precise and potent meditative inquiries, insightful stories, and reflections drawn from Prendergast’s intimate work with students and clients, you’ll begin to open your heart, see through your core limiting beliefs, and discover the true nature of your being.

Being at Home in the Universe by Richard Bellingham Summary

T. S. Elliot wrote: “At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh not fleshless; Neither from not towards; at the still point , there the dance is, Except for the point, the still point. There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.” This book talks about the still point in an entirely new way by framing it as our internal home. It also provides a path to “coming home” based on extensive research and personal experience. If you are interested in the dance of spiritual transformation, this is a must read. –Barry Cohen, Ph.D. Dr. Bellingham enlightens the reader by sharing his personal life experiences in an extraordinarily meaningful context. He bridges the divide between eastern and western thought to form one fully human message. He has the rare ability to satisfy and integrate our intellectual curiosity with our search for spiritual fulfillment. –Bill O’Brien, Ph.D. Having known the author for over 40 years, and witnessing many aspects of his spiritual journey, I highly recommend this book for anyone who continues to strive to find his inner self, or to be HOME. My own quest for SERENITY has been enriched by reading this book, and by witnessing Dr. Bellingham’s life-long desire to find inner peace. We can indeed “transform our lives from a mindless drill to a mindful dance” with enough work, desire and by digesting the thoughts expressed in this wonderful accounting of the author’s life and experiences. –Ronald Irwin M.D. This is coming-to-wisdom story with hope for us all. This tale is all personal, with regular bits of carefully crafted ways to grasp the most elusive thoughts of the world’s greatest teachers and soul guides. Read it. Smile at the disarming honesty. And be heartened. For he’s showing how wisdom can flourish more widely than ever in America. -Artie Egendorf, Ph. D. Author of “Healing from the War” and originator of Super Integral Synergy (http://sismoves.com) By openly and honestly illuminating his experience and journey over 40 years, Dr. Bellingham shines a bright light on our own unique paths. He knows the territory with all its hills and valleys. With this book we, who are researchers, can be assured we are home already. To me, being fully present with a deep sense of love for all things is the key message. We are not separate. –Mary Alice Fox

In the Light of What We Know by Zia Haider Rahman Summary

A bold, epic debut novel set during the war and financial crisis that defined the beginning of our century One September morning in 2008, an investment banker approaching forty, his career in collapse and his marriage unraveling, receives a surprise visitor at his West London townhouse. In the disheveled figure of a South Asian male carrying a backpack, the banker recognizes a long-lost friend, a mathematics prodigy who disappeared years earlier under mysterious circumstances. The friend has resurfaced to make a confession of unsettling power. In the Light of What We Know takes us on a journey of exhilarating scope--from Kabul to London, New York, Islamabad, Oxford, and Princeton--and explores the great questions of love, belonging, science, and war. It is an age-old story: the friendship of two men and the betrayal of one by the other. The visitor, a man desperate to climb clear of his wrong beginnings, seeks atonement; and the narrator sets out to tell his friend's story but finds himself at the limits of what he can know about the world--and, ultimately, himself. Set against the breaking of nations and beneath the clouds of economic crisis, this surprisingly tender novel chronicles the lives of people carrying unshakable legacies of class and culture as they struggle to tame their futures. Those Afraid of the Light by Andrew Muir Summary

They say the weirdest things happen when you are on acid... I was with my philosopher friend and her ambitious biochemist brother when I first took LSD. As Danny and Bugs vented their frustration at how out of touch the world had become, I realised reality really was stranger than fiction. My second acid trip was at an illegal rave by the mysterious woods near my home. I saw orbs pulsate in the sky above the Dead Tree and visitors from places I didn’t understand were welcomed into our world. And on my final trip, as I lay wrecked and paranoid, cowering inside a verge by a road, I watched in horror as the world began to end. Those Afraid of the Light is a tale of the end of the world; viewed through the eyes of a dropout and through the scientific and theological perspectives of his best friend Danny.
