The Leyland Octopus by , Summary

Rigid eight-wheelers with internal combustion engines were developed as a response to requirements and opportunities embedded in the 1933 Road and Rail Traffic Act. Although AEC was first in the field, in late 1934 or early 1935 Leyland was able to announce its Octopus. By the Second World War the Octopus had become a favourite with operators, known to carry a legal payload economically and reliably. After the war the driveline of the Octopus basically remained unchanged until 1960. Specification options were few, yet the model remained a market leader with lengthy waiting lists for new chassis. The model remained in production until the late 1970s and, as AEC authority Graham edge writes, 'For most of its productive life the Leyland Octopus was the definitive British eight-wheeler lorry.' The many superb photographs in this book range from shots from the 1930s including what is probably the first Octopus chassis and a rare TEW tipper to 1979 and an Octopus 2 which started service that year with a compacting refuse body. The text covers the full production story, and there are Appendices which give chassis and engine details.

Writing's on the Truck, The: The Tales and Photographs of a Traditional Signwriter by John Corah Summary

The Writing's on the Truck is a pictorial look at the traditional art of signwriting on commercial vehicles, by renowned signwriter John Corah. John began signwriting in 1982 working for Brian Harris Transport Ltd. Brian's well-turned out trucks were regularly seen on the roads between the Southwest and the North of Scotland and with this excellent showcase for his skills, John quickly built up a large customer base. Since then, he has written on ERFs, Leylands, Guys, Fodens, Atkinsons, Albions and AECs to name but a few and he is responsible for the distinctive livery of a number of traditional family run haulage companies. In some cases he worked on the vehicles when brand new and then again when restored some 20-30 years later! Sadly many of the once familiar and iconic companies have disappeared over the years and today computer generated vinyl lettering has almost completely taken over the art and few modern fleets are signwritten. The Writing's on the Truck includes 210 fully captioned and previously unpublished photos of the vehicles he worked on, many of which will be remembered by transport fans UK-wide. The book tells the story of the development of John's business, the methods he uses to create particular effects and numerous anecdotes from his working life. It will be of interest to anyone involved with road haulage and the preservation of classic trucks.

Blackjacks by Tony Illman Summary

This book is based on our lives. It starts very briefly in the United Kingdom and quickly moves to the Eastern Highland of Rhodesia. It moves through our childhood while we’re living in the eastern border areas, Umtali, Sabi Tanganda, and Chipinga. As we pass through our teenage years and become adults, it travels with us to Western Australia and then back to Chipinga. We share the lives of others as the Rhodesian Bush War escalates in what was a quiet and idyllic country town to one of the most dangerous and deadly districts in Rhodesia. Then the books deals with our final move back to Western Australia and our struggle to once again build a life for our children and ourselves. To most people, this may seem to be an unusual life, but to a Rhodesian, it would be considered pretty much the same story as many other families. Although it is our story, there are many stories told by others who have shared our way of life. It is about love, hate, and humor. It is about determination and desperation. It is about life and death and friendship and community spirit. Most of all, I hope it is a monument to those who died or were seriously injured, physically or mentally, black or white. It is also a salute to those incredible farmers, the Rhodesian armed forces, and those who worked in the rural areas during those troubled times. For me personally, writing this book has been a huge emotional journey.

From Moorlands to Highlands: A History of Harris & Miners and Brian Harris Transport by John Corah Summary

This book follows the history and development of Brian Harris Transport Limited, the original red, green, and yellow liveried lorries that made the trek between Devon and Scotland at regular intervals for over fifty years. In 1946, Brian's father, Jerry, and Sam Miners formed Harris & Miners; with their fleet of two Ford trucks and one Commertipper, these two men took on the ultimate haulage challenge of the time: road vs. train. The outcome was that Harris & Miners were offered a contract to haul 'Devon Grate' Candy fire surrounds to Glasgow in 1947. Young Brian Harris began driving for his father in an Albion Chieftain in 1960. When Jerry Harris passed, Brian bought out the Miners family and the company became Brian Harris Transport Limited. With his fleet of ERF lorries fitted with Gardner engines, Brian set about running the company in a way only understood by him. Over the course of its existence, the company utilized a vast quantity of magnificent machines, including the first ERF 'A' series in that area, the Leyland Roadtrain and one Leyland DAF. Brian Harris died in April 2012 and his funeral was attended by over 600 people from all over the UK. This new edition gives an update to the events that have taken place since the second edition was published in 2007, including the eulogy given by the author at the funeral, as well as 82 previously unpublished photographs. My Zimbabwean Odyssey by Sheila V Hartwell Summary

My book tells of my return to my beloved homeland, Zimbabwe, some fifteen years after my last visit. Before arriving, I am forewarned that I will weep at the state of the country, and I share with the reader my shock and sadness at what I find—a nation once considered the breadbasket of Africa is now reduced to a basket case. I return, too, to the Harare Children’s Home where I grew up, and as I am shown around, I am transported back to the early sixties, taking the reader with me as I share memories—good, bad, and amusing—of a place that I shall forever be grateful to and that will always have a very special place in my heart.

The Iris Trilogy: Memoirs of Iris Murdoch by John Bayley Summary

Dame Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) was one of the greatest British novelists and philosophers of the twentieth century. She read philosophy at Oxford where she met and later married John Bayley, a literary critic and fellow novelist. So began a forty-year, intense and unconventional but happy marriage, detailed in the classic bestselling memoir Iris. Despite Iris’ extramarital affairs with men and women throughout their long marriage - which John always suspected - their bond was unbreakable, and his memoir beautifully captures their child-like moments of bliss: walking in forests, swimming together in streams, and sharing hot cups of coffee on crisp mornings. These are touching but poignant stories with the knowledge that Iris and her grand intellect would eventually succumb to Alzheimer’s disease. John would care for her singlehandedly for five years, the last of which he writes about in Iris and the Friends that also describes her peaceful passing. Finally, he reflects on his bereavement and the void that is left when a soulmate departs in A Widower’s House. All three books are told by the person who knew Iris best, with gentle humour - at times unbearably moving - in his portrayal of a remarkable woman.

The Ideological Octopus by Justin Lewis Summary

Originally published in 1991, this introduction to studying the television audience discusses developments in semiology and cultural studies and their contribution to our understanding of the power of television. How, in the most precise and intricate sense, does television influence the way we think about the world? What ideological role does it play in contemporary culture? Does TV control us or do we control it? This insightful book assesses the progress in responding to these questions and offers some answers of its own. In the 1980s, with the emergence of semiology and cultural studies in particular, there were a number of significant theoretical developments in our understanding of television's power of which this book provides an overview while also incorporating traditional approaches. It suggests that television influences us ambiguously and unpredictably, depending upon who we are and how we think. Ambiguity does not blunt television's power, it simply diversifies it into a very modern kind of omnipotence. Employing two major qualitative audience studies, this impressive study illustrates its argument with findings that are both unexpected and disturbing.

Leyland Comet by Graham Edge Summary

This book is about one of Leyland Motors' famous models, the Leyland Comet. It covers the period from the introduction of the lorry in 1947 to its withdrawal from the British market in the mid-1970s. This illustrious name continued to be used in the Leyland-DAF era, such is the high regard and respect earned by one of Leyland's finest vehicles not only here, but also overseas. Leyland Comet presents the initial development of the model and the various types which evolved in subsequent years. When it was first introduced, the Leyland Comet was an immediate success and soon became the market leader in the high-quality, medium weight, lorry sector. In the 30 years of production history described in these pages, the Comet was only seriously challenged by its great rival, the AEC Mercury. In its heyday, the Leyland Motors name was synonymous with top quality. Their Comet range maintained and enhanced the company's reputation. Many small haulage firms building a business in the post-war years aspired to a Leyland lorry and felt a great sense of achievement when able to acquire one. This book has been out of print for many years, and has been brought back in 2016 to make this fascinating story available again to Leyland enthusiasts and those with an interest in general transport history. Graham Edge is a trucking journalist and author. (Series: Commercial Vehicles Archive Series) [Subject: Commercial Vehicles, Transportation]

Guld fra Rhodesia by Nick Carter Summary

Chronology of Classic Horror Films: The 1930s by Donald C. Willis Summary

Chronology of Classic Horror Films: the 1930s is an affectionate, thoughtful, and sometimes provocative re-examination of virtually every American horror feature from 1929 to 1939. Donald Willis takes the films, image-by-image, in the introduction, film-by-film, in the text, and year-by-year, in the highlights pages, which precede the reviews of each year's pictures. The introductory Itinerary ("Oh, the places you'll go!") chronologically "maps" the sites of the movies covered in the text, from 1929 to 1949, from Woodford's Theatre, New York City (The Last Warning), to the Forsythe estate (Master Minds). Willis makes the movies you've always known and loved spring to life again. The Mummy "It's either Now (Helen) or Forever (Imhotep), though her 'dreadful modern Cairo' comment hints at some backward-looking wistfulness on her part." Bride of Frankenstein "The power now belongs to Pretorius, in effect a mocking mirror reflecting back to Henry his original enthusiasm, and underlining the strain of callousness in the latter."
