Gods of this World by , Summary

Philosophers of religion have focused almost exclusively on the existence and nature of God and the nature and destiny of human beings. But these philosophers have been remiss in engaging discussions about the possibility of there being adverse gods of this world (demonic beings) despite being a doctrine that comprises a significant part of the Christian confession. This drought in the literature has left a number of questions unaddressed, including: Hasn't science buried the demonic? Are there any successful philosophical arguments for the existence of Satan? What kind of being is Satan? Is he the fallen angel of lore? Is it reasonable for Christians to say that demons are purely immaterial spirits? Can demons causally interact with the physical world and its inhabitants? Can demons perform diabolical miracles? Shandon Guthrie broaches new territory beginning with a rigorous defense for the existence of Satan and his cohorts. He then advances and defends a model for how to understand their nature in terms of their ontology and causal powers. No other book has attempted a full-fledged natural diabology on behalf of Christian orthodoxy. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the dark side of Christian theology and metaphysics.

Miss Understood by Lynette Greenfield Summary

In her new book, “Miss Understood” Lynette Greenfield stakes out as firmly as ever, the position of poetry in a world where language's registers have been largely mellowed by forces of oppression. Greenfield’s poems unfold in settings: her streets, cafes, and cities, yet these poems oppose grand pronouncements and renounce engagement. We see her continual evolution toward memory, but the role of poetry is still both vital and deeply pronounced. These new poems, pitched at a register slightly lower than that of praise, offer a sort of quiet surprise born out of wise and hard-earned skepticism. A poet has "only language, only words, images, only the world," she writes “Or elsewhere, "There is no truth”.

In Search of the Folk Daoists of North China by Stephen Jones Summary

The living practice of Daoist ritual is still only a small part of Daoist studies. Most of this work focuses on the southeast, with the vast area of north China often assumed to be a tabula rasa for local lay liturgical traditions. This book, based on fieldwork, challenges this assumption. With case studies on parts of Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces, Stephen Jones describes ritual sequences within funerals and temple fairs, offering details on occupational hereditary lay Daoists, temple-dwelling priests, and even amateur ritual groups. Stressing performance, Jones observes the changing ritual scene in this poor countryside, both since the 1980s and through all the tribulations of twentieth-century warfare and political campaigns. The whole vocabulary of north Chinese Daoists differs significantly from that of the southeast, which has so far dominated our image. Largely unstudied by scholars of religion, folk Daoist ritual in north China has been a constant theme of music scholars within China. Stephen Jones places lay Daoists within the wider context of folk religious practices - including those of lay Buddhists, sectarians, and spirit mediums. This book opens up a new field for scholars of religion, ritual, music, and modern Chinese society.

Gypsy Council by Nicholas C. Eliopoulos Summary

Gypsy society, for millennia traditionally nomadic, and having a tightly knit social structure with a most natural communication system, was convulsively rocked in the years following World War One as they were taking to settle in American cities. A handful of certain gifted, but dedicated and God-fearing individuals among them, rose to save their people from destruction, from certain dangerously power hungry aspiring dictators. As a cultural dictum, There can be no Gypsy of fame, so these saving heroes were allowed to fade away, never to be remembered, and never to be deified, as true Gypsies incognito to history, only the Lord being their Judge.

Golden bough by J. G. Frazer Summary

WHO does not know Turners picture of the Golden Bough? The scene, suffused with the golden glow of imagination in which the divine mind of Turner steeped and transfigured even the fairest natural landscape, is a dream-like vision of the little woodland lake of Nemi Dianas Mirror, as it was called by the ancients. No one who has seen that calm water, lapped in a green hollow of the Alban hills, can ever forget it. The two characteristic Italian villages which slumber on its banks, and the equally Italian palace whose terraced gardens descend steeply to the lake, hardly break the stillness and even the solitariness of the scene. Diana herself might still linger by this lonely shore, still haunt these woodlands wild.

Aaron's Rod by D.H. Lawrence Summary

Aaron Sisson lives a humble life in the English Midlands. He works as a union official for the coal mines, but his real passion is music. As an amateur, but very talented flautist, Aaron dreams of a big career as a beloved musician. Though, with his small community and unglamorous job at the coal mine, this dream seems unattainable. Trapped in an unhappy marriage, and unsatisfied at work, Aaron becomes more and more frustrated with his life. Finally, when he feels that he cannot take it any longer, Aaron abandons his two kids and wife to run away to Italy. As he begins his journey Aaron feels hopeful for the first time in a long time. However, the journey proves to be more trouble than Aaron expected. When he falls ill, he befriends Rawdon Lilly, a cynical writer. After Rawdon nurses Aaron through his sickness, Aaron is free to continue on to Florence. Upon entering a social circle of intellectuals and artists, he experiences a higher level of conversation—discussions about politics, leadership, and expression. Feeling liberated, Aaron has an affair with an aristocratic woman, excited at all the new pleasures he is experiencing. Of course, it comes at a cost. In a city struggling in the aftermath of a war that wiped out generations, talks of revolution and change echo in the streets, and Aaron’s eyes are opened to social and political problems he had never considered. With complicated characters and beautifully written prose, Aaron’s Rod by the prolific author, D.H Lawrence, is a unique perspective on how World War I affected the individual. Looking beyond just the death toll of the war, Aaron’s Rod examines those who were left behind, the political turmoil that followed, and the emotional plight of the individual. With allusions to the bible and complicated questions on both the battle and partnership between art and intellect, Aaron’s Rod poses thought-provoking questions about all levels of Western society. This edition of Aaron’s Rod by D.H Lawrence is now presented in an easy-to-read font and features a unique and eye-catching new cover design. With these accommodations, Aaron’s Rod is restored to its original genius while being updated to modern standards.
