Leaning into the Spirit by , Summary

This book contains fresh insights into ecumenism and, notwithstanding claims of an “ecumenical winter,” affirms the view that we are actually moving into a “new ecumenical spring.” It offers new theological insights in the areas of Christology, Pneumatology and Trinitarian theology, and discusses developments in ecumenism in the USA, UK, Australia, India, and Africa, as well as in ecumenical institutions such as the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Anglican Roman Catholic Commission (ARCIC).

The Caroline Divines and the Church of Rome by Mark Langham Summary

In the early seventeenth century, as the vehement aggression of the early Reformation faded, the Church of England was able to draw upon scholars of remarkable ability to present a more thoughtful defence of its position. The Caroline Divines, who flourished under King Charles I, drew upon vast erudition and literary skill, to refute the claims of the Church of Rome and affirm the purity of the English religious settlement. This book examines their writings in the context of modern ecumenical dialogue, notably that of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) to ask whether their arguments are still valid, and indeed whether they can contribute to contemporary ecumenical progress. Drawing upon an under-used resource within Anglicanism’s own theological history, this volume shows how the restatement by the Caroline Divines of the catholic identity of the Church prefigured the work of ARCIC, and provides Anglicans with a vocabulary drawn from within their own tradition that avoids some of the polemical and disputed formulations of the Roman Catholic tradition.

Gathered in my Name by William T. Cavanaugh Summary

This volume differs from many quincentennial discussions of the Protestant Reformation--and ecumenical scholarship more generally--in that it shifts the focus from Europe and the West to the global South, where ecumenism's promises and challenges are quite different. In postcolonial and post-missionary Africa, the churches continue to expand, competition among denominations is lively, and Christian rivalry with Islam is often a reality. In Latin America, Protestants have severely eroded the Catholic Church's hegemony, originally forged in the zeal of the Counter-Reformation to combat the perceived errors of Luther and Calvin. In India, the Christian churches are a tiny, beleaguered minority facing an increasingly militant Hindu nationalism. These essays pay close attention to the different contexts of intra-Christian relationships worldwide--the actual situation on the ground. If ecumenism will succeed, it cannot be simply a matter of experts at a conference attempting to agree about doctrines abstracted from the contexts in which they were forged, the contexts in which doctrinal disagreements caused ecclesial ruptures, or the contexts in which Christians continue to live out our divided existence. This volume attempts to be sensitive to the lived experience of divided Christians in whatever part of the world they find themselves.

Did the Anglicans and Roman Catholics Agree on the Eucharist? by Colin Buchanan Summary

Fifty-two years ago [in 1966] Archbishop Michael Ramsey of Canterbury visited Rome and agreed with the Pope to inaugurate an Anglican-Roman Catholic theological dialogue. Three phases of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) resulted and continue to this day. ARCIC I agreed on a statement on Eucharistic Doctrine in 1971 and an Elucidation of it in 1979. The Vatican declined full endorsement of these, and in 1994 ARCIC II produced Clarifications of them, which the Vatican accepted as sufficient. Colin Buchanan, who himself published the 1971 Statement in England, has followed the international dialogue closely since 1971. He here prints all the relevant texts and examines in detail the attempted reconciling of traditional Roman Catholic eucharistic belief and Anglican reformed doctrine. His study includes Apostolicae curae and Malines, and in the modern era follows public and synodical debate, and the question of "reception." Three unprecedented unique features are: first, a diachronic study of the one doctrine; second, a fair regard for reformed Anglican beliefs; and third, a relating of dogmatic theology to eucharistic liturgy. The history prompts the question that forms the book's title, and close following of that history also provides the answer.

Marriage - Constancy and Change in Togetherness by Aldegonde Brenninkmeijer-Werhahn Summary

Partners develop and change during their shared path through life. Some things abide, while others are subject to change. Precisely because not everything remains as it was at the beginning, changes can also be understood as creative possibilities for common growth. This book seeks to show how married couples are challenged to give each other support, and also to help each other in this process of growth. In this Album amicorum, three thematic areas are taken up. These constitute the basis of five decades of shared life, and the wisdom of marital love finds expression in them: theology and spirituality, questions about bioethics, and the Jewish-Christian dialogue. Aldegonde Brenninkmeijer-Werhahn is the founder and director of the International Academy for Marital Spirituality (INTAMS), founded in 1989 in Brussels. Together with her husband, Hubert Brenninkmeijer, she also founded the Centre for the Study of Christianity at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2000), and the Cardinal Bea Center for Judaic Studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (2001). The History of the Christian Church (Complete) by Philip Schaff Summary

As I appear before the public with a new edition of my Church History, I feel more than ever the difficulty and responsibility of a task which is well worthy to occupy the whole time and strength of a long life, and which carries in it its own rich reward. The true historian of Christianity is yet to come. But short as I have fallen of my own ideal, I have done my best, and shall rejoice if my efforts stimulate others to better and more enduring work. History should be written from the original sources of friend and foe, in the spirit of truth and love, "sine ira et studio," "with malice towards none, and charity for all," in clear, fresh, vigorous style, under the guidance of the twin parables of the mustard seed and leaven, as a book of life for instruction, correction, encouragement, as the best exposition and vindication of Christianity. The great and good Neander, "the father of Church History" first an Israelite without guile hoping for the Messiah, then a Platonist longing for the realization of his ideal of righteousness, last a Christian in head and heart made such a history his life-work, but before reaching the Reformation he was interrupted by sickness, and said to his faithful sister: "Hannchen, I am weary; let us go home; good night!" And thus he fell gently asleep, like a child, to awake in the land where all problems of history are solved. When, after a long interruption caused by a change of professional duties and literary labors, I returned to the favorite studies of my youth, I felt the necessity, before continuing the History to more recent times, of subjecting the first volume to a thorough revision, in order to bring it up to the present state of investigation. We live in a restless and stirring age of discovery, criticism, and reconstruction. During the thirty years which have elapsed since the publication of my separate "History of the Apostolic Church," there has been an incessant activity in this field, not only in Germany, the great workshopof critical research, but in all other Protestant countries. Almost every inch of ground has been disputed and defended with a degree of learning, acumen, and skill such as were never spent before on the solution of historical problems.

Forgiveness and Reconciliation: a Path to Peaceful Fellowship by Samson Abiona Summary

This book is not just about discussing or describing what forgiveness and reconciliation are all about but it is mainly to lay emphasis on how forgiveness and reconciliation can bring peace into human fellowships and relationships-- a path to reduce if not to eliminate wars all over the world. The path to these peaceful fellowships is stressed out in the book in the relationships between individual persons as well as among groups of people. To achieve the derivation of the peaceful fellowships at interpersonal, intergroup and political levels, various topics such as apology, anger, resentment, punishment, retribution, reparation, apathy and amnesty are treated to some extent. The book is non-religious but rather meant to express what all human beings world-wide could achieve if they embrace forgiveness and reconciliation. For this reason, one of the chapters deals with the perspectives of some main world religions on the topic of the book and another chapter states the concepts and convictions of people of various ethnicity and spirituality. It is hoped that people of all levels and in all nations of the world will benefit from the contents of the book which are neither meant to criticize nor be judgemental about the individuals mentioned.

„And on this Rock I Will Build My Church“. A New Edition of Philip Schaff’s „History of the Christian Church“ by Muhammad Wolfgang G. A. Schmidt Summary

This voluminous work on Church History by Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was originally published between 1858 and 1893 in eight volumes in the USA and covers the period from the beginnings of Biblical Christianity in A.D. 1 to the History of the Reformation in Germany and Switzerland (1517-1648). Being still a popular text in North America, this work had been out of print for over a century and has now been carefully edited and reformatted for republication in three volumes, each of them containing the text of two volumes of the original edition. Schaff’s work, unlike other works in the field, covers a multitude of church history-related aspects – from church doctrine, policy, events and processes to aspects of social moral and family life, arts and more. It is a very comprehensive text, extremely well-written and readable, rich in material and sources used, and attests to the excellence of protestant German theological scholarship under the influence of emerging Historical-Critical Biblical Exegesis at his time. This first volume covers the period from the beginnings to the Ante-Nicene Fathers (A.D. 1-311).

A Reconciliation of Scientific Observation with Spiritual Revela by Thomas Edward McNeightpeglerpegler Summary

Description'A Reconciliation of Scientific Observation with Spiritual Revelation' is my latest book dealing with issues of a philosophical as well as of a spiritual nature, using as its backdrop the spectre of mental illness and the way that many sufferers from mental disorders are treated these days. I have tried, in this short piece of writing, to elucidate concerns regarding truth and reality that continue to vex me, as well as highlighting the plight of the mentally ill, showing, I hope, the harshness with which those people are treated by the community at large. About the AuthorThomas Edward McNeight is a published author on issues concerning mental health. He uses as his background his studies in philosophy with the university. He lives in Whanganui, New Zealand, occupying himself with writing and painting, as well as acquainting himself with his friends who also have emotional problems and are only too aware of the persecution that is so prevalent in today's world regarding people who do not seem to be able to fit in, in the society to which they supposedly belong.

The Confessions of Saint Augustine by Augustine Summary

'The reader who has never met Augustine before ought to go first of all to the Confessions,' reflected the Trappist monk and scholar Thomas Merton. 'Augustine lived the theology that he wrote. . . . He experienced the reality of Christ living in his own soul.' Saint Augustine, the celebrated theologian who served as Bishop of Hippo from A.D. 396 until his death in A.D. 430, is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the Western world. Written in the form of a long prayer addressed directly to God, Augustine's Confessions, the remarkable chronicle of his conversion to Christianity, endures as the greatest spiritual autobiography of all time. 'Augustine possessed a strong, capacious, argumentative mind,' wrote Edward Gibbon. 'He boldly sounded the dark abyss of grace, predestination, free-will, and original sin.' And the eminent historian Jaroslav Pelikan remarked: 'There has, quite literally, been no century of the sixteen centuries since the conversion of Augustine in which he has not been a major intellectual, spiritual, and cultural force.'

Church History Vol. I by Philip Schaff Summary

Philip Schaff's History of the Christian Church excels at providing an impressive and instructive historical treatment of the Christian church. This is Volume One covering from 01 A.D. to 100 A.D. This volumous work begins with the Early Church at its formative era. This volume and the first will comprise the major individual and their writings, which shall comprise the first five (5) volumes of the Ante-Nicene Series. Schaff's treatment is comprehensive and in depth, discussing all the major and minor figures, time periods, and movements of the Church. One feature of the “History of the Christian Church”, which readers will immediately notice is just how beautifully written it is, in particular when comparing other texts of a similar nature. Simply put, Schaff's prose is lively and engaging. There is no question that this work’s scholarship is highly notated, and is overall an excellent reference/ resource.
