A practical and friendly guide to taming your chaos written specifically for creative people by the bestselling author of Banish Clutter Forever. ‘Sheila gave me the tools to hunt success, and the infrastructure to handle it when it came.’ Stik, world renowned street artist and author Most of the conventional ‘productivity’ advice you’ll find in the ‘soft business’ section simply does not work for creative people. Surprisingly, to date there has not been a single book that addresses the unique organizational challenges that artists face. This book sets out to change that, it addresses the myth that truly creative people are messy and that they need mess in order to create. Sheila Chandra applies her professional insights as a ‘creative’ and organizing expert to the lives of other busy creative people in all disciplines – showing them how good organization can liberate their creative ‘magic’. She begins with artists’ physical spaces, including arranging their workspaces and offices so that they remain tidy effortlessly. Her career ‘headspace’ chapters cover: • creative well-being, including artist support systems • career well-being, including networking and collaborations • self-promotion and how to avoid working for free • making social media pay • personal branding, career planning and goals • how to manage copyright issues and legal paperwork • legacy management And all from an artist’s point of view. These fool-proof, tried and tested systems are mixed with creativity tips and artist well-being advice that only one artist knows to give another. Written with real affection for the reader, Sheila Chandra takes the creative person by the hand and puts them on the path to success.

A Child at Heart Pdf/ePub eBook Author: Christopher Phillips

A Child at Heart by Christopher Phillips Summary

Weaving together philosophy, social science and neuroscience research, personal anecdotes and dialogues, A Child at Heart takes a radically different approach to the traditional boundaries between childhood and adulthood to reveal how rather than lapse into adulthood, we can achieve what the Greeks of old call arete—all-around excellence—when we look to children and youth as a lodestar for our development. Childhood is our primary launching pad, a time of life when learning is more intense than at any other, when we gain the critical knowledge and skills that can help ensure that we remain adaptable. This book weaves together the thinking of philosophers from across the ages who make the unsettling assertion that with the passage of time we are apt to shrink mentally, emotionally, and cognitively. If we follow what has become an all-too-common course, we denature our original nature—which brims with curiosity, empathy, reason, wonder, and a will to experiment and understand—and we regress, our sense of who we are will become fuzzier and everyone in our orbit will pay a price. Mounting evidence shows that we begin our lives with a moral, intellectual, and creative bang, and in this groundbreaking, heavily researched, and highly engaging volume, Christopher Phillips makes the provocative case that childhood isn't merely a state of becoming, while adulthood is one of being, as if we've "arrived" and reached the summit. His life-changing proposition is that if we embrace the defining qualities of youth, we're not destined to become frail, dispirited, or unhinged, we'll grow in a way defined by wonder, curiosity, imaginativeness, playfulness, and compassion—in essence, unlimited potential.

Spark: Ignite initiative. We're better together. by Bradley Charbonneau Summary

The question I most get having now written 5 books together with my kids is not about the characters or the dog or the castle or if Lu will ever stop eating fries.* No. The question I get from parents is, "How in the world did you manage to do a creative project with your kids, how did it go, and how can I do it, too?" The answer was: 1.) I just decided to do it, 2.) it went both terribly wrong and wonderfully right, and 3.) this book is how you can do it, too. One parent pulled me aside, a bit frazzled, and almost threatened me with, "If you ever hold a weekend workshop on how to do a creative project together with your kids, I'll pay whatever you want to charge." When I sat down with my then-8-year old on the red chair in early March of 2014, having just read a really bad children's book and said, "Wow, that book was pretty bad." I then immediately followed up with, "We can do better than that." My son looked at me like I was crazy (I was) and challenged me to follow through on my dare. I did. Within a month, we had a book on Amazon. Now we can boast almost all of the list below: 1.) We have sold 1,000,000+ books in 89 countries and 7 languages. 2.) We sometimes had to resort to bribery, coercion, and ice cream to get a chapter done. 3.) Just on royalties alone, Li is eyeing a Maserati for his 16th birthday. 4.) We created something from nothing and no one can ever take that away. 5.) We get regular calls from Hollywood producers about making the movie versions. 6.) We broke all of Audible's rules when we recorded the audiobook version--and got rejected. 7.) Both boys have transformed into perfect angels who study Mandarin in their free time after violin lessons and before their volunteer work for global literacy. 8.) I have a audio proof of my 10-year old narrating Chapter 8 that I can use at his wedding to embarrass him beyond his wildest nightmares and I can bring that up whenever I like to remind my boys that we are a family who shares experiences (and it's good for blackmail). 9.) We did it all right. 10.) We did it all wrong. 11.) We did it. Period. HINT: Take the list above and choose which one you like. This book is proof that we can create something from nothing together with our kids. What you're about to embark on is a journey that no one can take away from you. We're going to create a time capsule you'll be able to cherish until your 89-year-old neighbor finally tells you she's deaf and hasn't heard a word about it. This book is going to help you create a bond with your kids. For the record: 1.) We're not shooting for stardom (at least, not beyond your family). 2.) It's almost guaranteed it won't win any literary awards. 3.) I don't care if you sell 7 copies. (P.S. Either will you.) 4.) We're shooting for the experience of starting, persevering, and finishing a creative project with parents and children that you can be proud of (or cringe over). I've got to finish up this bit here as I need to interview my teenager for our latest book, "What I Wish I Knew When I Was 13." He hates the idea so far. Usually, that's a firm indicator that it's going to be a success. Speaking of success, we're not going to succeed if we don't get started. Let us help you get started. Ready? * Lu will NEVER stop eating fries.

The End of Big by Nicco Mele Summary

How seemingly innocuous technologies are unsettling the balance of power by putting it in the hands of the masses - and what a world without "big" will mean for all of us. In The End of Big, social media pioneer, political and business strategist, and Harvard Kennedy School faculty member Nicco Mele offers a fascinating, sometimes frightening look at how our ability to stay connected - constantly, instantly, and globally - is dramatically changing our world. Governments are being upended by individuals relying only on social media. Major political parties are seeing their power eroded by grassroots forces through online fund-raising. Universities are scrambling to preserve their student populations in the face of less expensive, more accessible online courses. Print and broadcast news outlets are struggling to compete with citizen journalists and bloggers. Our traditional institutions are being disrupted in revolutionary ways, some for the better. But, as Nicco Mele argues, the benefits of new technology come with unintended consequences. In The End of Big, Mele examines: - How fringe political forces enter the mainstream and gain traction using everyday technology - with the enormous potential to undermine central power - What happens when investigative journalism is replaced by ad hoc bloggers, mobile video, and instantaneous tweets...and whether they challenge or simply enable power - Why Web-based micro-businesses are outcompeting major corporations, and what innovations will alter the way we work, own things, and pay for goods and services - The collapse of traditional party politics, and the rise of a new kind of democracy, one which could produce dynamic and effective leaders...or demagogues - How citizen initiatives can replace local and state government functions, such as safety regulations, tax collection, and garbage pickup, and do so cheaper, faster, and better Mele argues that unless we exercise caution in our use of these new technologies, we risk a dark and wildly unstable future, one in which our freedoms and basic human values could be destroyed rather than enhanced. Both hopeful and alarming, The End of Big is a thought-provoking, passionately argued book that offers genuine insight into the ways we are using technology, and how it is radically changing our world in ways we are only now beginning to understand.

Living on the margins offers a unique insight into the working lives of undocumented (or ‘irregular’) migrants living in London, and their employers. Breaking new ground, this topical book exposes the contradictions in policies, which marginalise and criminalise these migrants, while promoting exploitative labour market policies. However, the book reveals that the migrants can be active agents in shaping their lives within the constraint of status. Taking an inter-disciplinary approach, this fascinating book offers an international context to the research and provides theoretical, policy and empirical analyses. It will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and academics, as well as policy makers, practitioners and interested non-specialists.
