Summary:

Peter Caddy gave himself completely and unconditionally to life, embracing it with zest, courage and delight. There was nothing otherworldly about Peter. He was a man of action who thoroughly enjoyed taking on a challenge -- the greater the better. Whether serving in the wartime RAF, climbing the Himalayas in Tibet, managing a luxury hotel on spiritual principles or running a New Age community, he climbed every mountain God put in front of him. He married five times and fathered six children. As a consequence, his life reads like an adventure novel: it is a ripping good yarn, which is all the more powerful because it is true.

The first true social history of the phenomenon known as New Age culture, Children of the New Age presents an overview of the diverse varieties of New Age belief and practice from the 1930s to the present day. Drawing on original ethnographic research and rarely seen archival material, it calls into question the assumption that the New Age is a discrete and unified 'movement', and reveals the unities and fractures evident in contemporary New Age practice.

Summary:

Misty memories of a boy born to a poor sharecroper in the worst economic depression the world has ever known come to life with dramatic clarity in this troublihng memoir. Trapped into surviving on the pittance realized by his family for growing the deadly health killing tobacco plant, Jeff struggles to understand the societal contradictions that control his existence throughout the twentieth century. Imagination and dreamy fantasies fertilize larger hopes for him as he plows his father's lonely fields and wrestles with the arbitrary behavioral imnperatives that control his life. Cruelly deprived of broad cultural stimulation, Jeff struggles to realize dreams fostered by Hollywood myths and pulp fiction. Plentiful food--a gift of the land--adequate housing and most of all, a pervassive love and caring concern by others sharing this coimmunity of poverty and hard work, not only are sustaining but give him sweet lasting memories of those hard times. Anger at deprivations endured by his parents fuel ambitions to escape a life growing the noxious crops of tobacco. Nourished by the love, warmth and generosity of a large extended family living a similar life, Jeff survives to engage the larger world where he encounters the many problems that befall allhuman beings.

Based on his experiences over a thirty-four year period, the book chronicles the many difficult, sometimes dangerous situations that he has faced because of his disorder. Not only does the book describe various living situations and personal relationships, it also portrays the inner struggle of an individual overwhelmed by a major mental illness. The book also describes the role creativity and spirituality play in understanding and treating bipolar manic depression. Ultimately, however, the book offers hope, as the author gains wisdom in managing symptoms and understanding the world. About the AuthorJohn Zurn has been faced with the challenge of bipolar manic depression for his entire adult life. Despite this disability, he has still managed to work and write for over thirty years. As a teacher and rehabilitation counselor, he has helped others find a sense of hope and purpose. Summary:

Jonathan Swift and the Millennium of Madness shows for the first time Swift's philosophical challenge to John Locke and challenge to his disciples: John Toland for deism and advocacy of John Milton and the English Revolution; Shaftesbury for confusing self-interest with the public weal, and Peter Browne for right-wing Irish philosophy. Craven demonstrates that Swift's first masterpiece A Tale of a Tub (1704) was his response to lapsing of the Licensing Act in 1695 and the consequent ascendancy of modern priestcraft. Craven's revisionary book does much more than solve riddles that have perplexed Swiftians and historians for centuries. The book reveals Swift's intimate understanding of seventeenth-century science from Bacon and the Invisible College at Oxford to the Newtonian, synthesis, the Paracelsian innovations in medicine, the resurgence of mid-century reform, and the links between the humors traditions in medicine and literature, saturnine melancholy, and the dreaming god Kronos. The book proposes a new view of intellectual history. Swift joins the philosophies of Neoplatonic divine order, Epicurean atomism, and the Reformation as permeated with millennial expectations. As a result, modern information systems remain skewed by a deconstructing scientific millenarian myth. Swift like Aristotle earlier rejects this classical faith in favor of the more somber Kronos myth.

Summary:

At the beginning of the third millennium, concepts of spirituality are undergoing rapid transformation. While still closely connected to Christian values and beliefs, they are now also applied cross-culturally and used in interfaith and secular contexts. Voices around the globe affirm the urgent need for greater spiritual well-being, yet it is not clear how this can best be achieved or even what it means. The development of a wholesome spirituality relating to profound personal and social transformations may well be the most urgent task humanity has to address today. In this book, leading scholars of theology and religion explore the complex dynamics of different spiritual beliefs and practices and their effects on contemporary society. The editor's introductory essay examines the many understandings of spirituality in a postmodern intellectual and social context, but also looks at spirituality as both a personal quest and new academic field. The essays which follow, from a range of international contributors, present a rich tapestry of reflections on different aspects of spirituality. The contributions are grouped under three headings: Tradition and Change; Health and Education; and Culture and Politics.
