Deadly Nightshade by Elizabeth Daly Summary

An amateur sleuth aids a Maine town plagued by poison in this mystery by Agatha Christie’s favorite American author. With talk of war all over the radio waves, antiquarian book dealer Henry Gamadge is back in Maine, this time by invitation of his friend Detective Mitchell. Mitchell has a real puzzler on his hands: three different children have been poisoned with deadly nightshade, and there is no motive that could possibly link all three poisonings, beside the fact that the children all live in the same small community. Could the nearby encampment of Gypsies be involved? And was the death of a state trooper at about the same time a mere coincidence? Gamadge sets out to separate fact from fiction and find the killer before they strike again . . . “An exciting novel and an excellent mystery.” —San Jose News

Fault-Tolerant Distributed Transactions on Blockchain by Suyash Gupta,Jelle Hellings,Mohammad Sadoghi Summary

Since the introduction of Bitcoin—the first widespread application driven by blockchain—the interest of the public and private sectors in blockchain has skyrocketed. In recent years, blockchain-based fabrics have been used to address challenges in diverse fields such as trade, food production, property rights, identity-management, aid delivery, health care, and fraud prevention. This widespread interest follows from fundamental concepts on which blockchains are built that together embed the notion of trust, upon which blockchains are built. 1. Blockchains provide data transparancy. Data in a blockchain is stored in the form of a ledger, which contains an ordered history of all the transactions. This facilitates oversight and auditing. 2. Blockchains ensure data integrity by using strong cryptographic primitives. This guarantees that transactions accepted by the blockchain are authenticated by its issuer, are immutable, and cannot be repudiated by the issuer. This ensures accountability. 3. Blockchains are decentralized, democratic, and resilient. They use consensus-based replication to decentralize the ledger among many independent participants. Thus, it can operate completely decentralized and does not require trust in a single authority. Additions to the chain are performed by consensus, in which all participants have a democratic voice in maintaining the integrity of the blockchain. Due to the usage of replication and consensus, blockchains are also highly resilient to malicious attacks even when a significant portion of the participants are malicious. It further increases the opportunity for fairness and equity through democratization. These fundamental concepts and the technologies behind them—a generic ledger-based data model, cryptographically ensured data integrity, and consensus-based replication—prove to be a powerful and inspiring combination, a catalyst to promote computational trust. In this book, we present an in-depth study of blockchain, unraveling its revolutionary promise to instill computational trust in society, all carefully tailored to a broad audience including students, researchers, and practitioners. We offer a comprehensive overview of theoretical limitations and practical usability of consensus protocols while examining the diverse landscape of how blockchains are manifested in their permissioned and permissionless forms.

Night Hunt by Carey Decevito Summary

Two disappearances… Lives forever altered… A witness leads to a manhunt that’ll shape what’s to come. She disappeared so long ago, but she’d never faded from his mind. Search and Rescue handler Caden Summers loved his life for the most part. He owns a little piece of wildlife heaven on the outskirts of town, has great friends, a side gig with Nightshade Securities and best of all—Renegade—his four-legged search partner and best friend. Suspected, ridiculed and dismissed. No one can blame Aspen Ridge for resorting to a corner in the middle of nowhere to live her life after her sister’s kidnapping. Her cottage keeps her away from the society that once ostracized her. Her career moonlighting as Penny Sexton helps her keep a pulse on the outside world, becoming the person she always wanted to be. Her only complaint in life is that her past surrounds her everywhere she looks. Rescued from a suspect retrieval attempt gone wrong, Cade finds himself nursed by a spitfire of a woman who isn’t afraid to wield a weapon in front of his friends—something he’d found oddly attractive—yet a little foolish considering their background. When past and present collide, submersing him into the longest unsolved manhunt of his career, Cade knows one thing is sure. No one involved with this case will ever be the same again. All it took was three days with the feisty Amazon for him to make up his mind. He’d help her find her peace. Then he’d help himself to a piece. Hopefully before all hell breaks loose.

Essential Oils by Mozaniel Santana de Oliveira Summary

Over the centuries humans have used essential oils in the most diverse applications, mainly medicinal, and as sources of bioactive molecules. They have been used in different industrial sectors, such as the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, cosmetics and more recently in the food industry. Due to new research in the field of food science and technology, new sources of bioactive compounds have been described, as they have been shown to be a viable alternative for applications in biofilms, nano emulsions, natural antioxidants, control of microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria and protozoa that can be pathological for human health. The use of essential oils in food science and technology is relatively new, with few articles and books in circulation covering new approaches. Essential Oils: Applications and Trends in Food Science and Technology provides relevant information on the applications of essential oils in this sector, bringing a reliable synopsis through literature reviews addressing mainly their use and perspectives and contributing in a systematic way to the dissemination of important knowledge on the use of essential oils in the area of food science and technology. This text presents new information on applications of essential oils in food science and covers Amazonian plants which are rich in essential oils plus new and developing sources of volatile and bioactive molecules. The use of essential oils in agriculture is covered in depth plus encapsulated and nano products used as food preservatives. As the first research work focusing exclusively on essential oils and their use in the food sector, this book can be used as a singular source for researchers seeking up-to-date coverage on this subject of emerging importance.

Poisonous Plants by Robert Bevan-Jones Summary

The botanical history of Britain and North West Europe has a dark and a light side. Plants have been used as weapons to harm people, taken deliberately as addictive drugs and also employed as tools in witchcraft and used as magical amulets. Yet many of these same plants have been medicinally vital to numerous European communities; as the author notes, frequently the only difference between a benevolent medicine and a poison is dosage. In this book, which is richly illustrated with modern colour photographs and illustrations from herbals, Robert Bevan-Jones brings together a wealth of documentary and archaeo-botanical sources to discuss the cultural, social (and anti-social) role of the fifty most significant species of poisonous plants and fungi found in Britain, either as natives or as introductions. An introductory essay puts into context the development of British society's knowledge of toxic plants: the 'cultural botany' applied in Britain today has evolved over thousands of years, absorbing information from European texts and importing useful plants from Europe, such as the mandrake. The book's central A to Z section - from aconite to yew - then informs the reader about the history and uses of 43 species of poisonous plants, especially those that have a documented history of medicinal usage. Four important fungi species - death cap, liberty cap, fly agaric and ergot - also have separate essays. As well as the plants' histories and appearance, their chemical constituents receive coverage; these give them powerful and diverse properties, which demand our admiration and respect. The book aims to add to the knowledge offered by field identification guides, and help reduce the risk associated with accidental ingestion. Case histories are given in as much detail as possible and the information will hopefully help the reader understand the properties of plants they may encounter, either in an archaeological, botanical or horticultural context. Most of these plants can yet be found growing in woodlands, parks, botanical gardens, roadsides, waterways, churchyards and abbey sites. This is an essential book not only for botanists and historical ecologists, but also for anyone interested in the toxic plant traditions of Britain and Europe.

No Shortcuts by Max Smeets Summary

Over the past decade, numerous states have declared cyberspace as a new domain of warfare, sought to develop a military cyber strategy and establish a cyber command. These developments have led to much policy talk and concern about the future of warfare as well as the digital vulnerability of society. No Shortcuts provides a level-headed view of where we are in the militarization of cyberspace. In this book, Max Smeets bridges the divide between technology and policy to assess the necessary building blocks for states to develop a military cyber capacity. Smeets argues that for many states, the barriers to entry into conflict in cyberspace are currently too high. Accompanied by a wide range of empirical examples, Smeets shows why governments abilities to develop military cyber capabilities might change over time and explains the limits of capability transfer by states and private actors.
