Purge by Sofi Oksanen Summary

A breathtakingly suspenseful, award-winning tale of two women dogged by their own shameful pasts and the dark, unspoken history that binds them. When Aliide Truu, an older woman living alone in the Estonian countryside, finds a disheveled girl huddled in her front yard, she suppresses her misgivings and offers her shelter. Zara is a young sex-trafficking victim on the run from her captors, but a photo she carries with her soon makes it clear that her arrival at Aliide’s home is no coincidence. Survivors both, Aliide and Zara engage in a complex arithmetic of suspicion and revelation to distill each other’s motives; gradually, their stories emerge, the culmination of a tragic family drama of rivalry, lust, and loss that played out during the worst years of Estonia’s Soviet occupation. “A stirring and humane work of art” (The New Republic), Purge is “an engrossing read” (NPR) in which “Oksanen skillfully weaves histories together to form a rich, complex novel” (Shelf Awareness, Top 10 Books of 2010). “A stunner.” —The Plain Dealer (Cleveland) “[A] bold combination of history, politics, and suspense.” —Sunday Times (UK) “[A] taut, well-crafted tale of Europe’s still living post-war pain.” —Booklist “A dark, harrowing, and at times difficult read that wrings every ounce of emotion from the reader.” —The Bookseller

Purge by Nicole Johns Summary

Purge is a beautifully crafted memoir that has a Girl, Interrupted feel. In this raw and engaging account of her months in rehab, Nicole Johns documents her stay in a residential treatment facility for eating disorders. Her prose is lucid and vivid, as she seamlessly switches verb tenses and moves through time. She unearths several important themes: body image and sexuality, sexual assault and relationships, and the struggle to piece together one's path in life. While other books about eating disorders and treatment may sugarcoat the harsh realities of living with and recovering from an eating disorder, Purge does not hold back. The author presents an honest, detailed account of her experience with treatment, avoiding the clichéd happily-ever-after ending while still offering hope to those who struggle with eating disorders, as well as anyone who has watched a loved one fight to recover from an eating disorder. Purge sends a message: though the road may be rough, ultimately there is hope.

The Purge of Dutch Quislings by Henry L. Mason Summary

This study is based on research which I conducted in the Netherlands in 1948 and 1949. In addition, I was able to rely on experiences and impressions of the 1944-1946 period, when I was stationed in the Low Countries as a United States Army Military Intelligence Officer. In my description of Dutch purge measures I have attempte~ to be as unbiased a judge as possible; whenever I was unable to arrive at a definite conclusion I con tented myself with describing the opposing points of view. I am quite aware that this attitude of "neutrality" may be criticized, not only by many ex-Resistance men who have become dis gusted with the alleged softness of the purge, but also by many others who appear equally dismayed about its severity. For purposes of comparison, readers who are familiar with action against collaborators in other countries - such as France, Italy, or the Balkans - may note that the Dutch purge was not dominated by considerations of party politics. All Dutchme- employers and workers, Protestants and Catholics, Conservatives and Socialists - had been united in their resistance against the enemy. Consequently, disagreements about purge measures did not follow class, religious, or party lines. The few Dutch Commu nists had never been able to dominate the Resistance; neither were they able to exploit the purge for their purposes. Thus, in Holland problems of collaboration and purge could be studied in their purest form, without consideration of other factors.

THE PURGE by Olumide Anisulowo Summary

Beyond the Hadryan alp, as far as the Middle East, a kingdom is re-born, a kingdom once famous for beauty, honour and glory. Stripped of its primordial form, by a devious pact wrought in the heart of Hades itself, old Argon dies, and all that is left of her is an imprint of grave darkness, bearing the foul breath of hell. The early hours of her reincarnation witness the rise of devils from the earth’s foetus by whose fist vampires and lycanthropes rule fiercely while the sons of the great giants of old, the seeds of Anak and Zamzummim, roam the land wastefully. Denatured by the stench of hell and the curse of heaven, Argon becomes the monster that terrifies every kingdom, far and near. Confronted by this force, which threatens to possess every kingdom around her, Lord Quadrack, the Third, orders the finest of his soldiers, or knights, as they were called, to rid the land of the evil thereof and also restore it back to order. So, for the first time, the Hadryan soldiers, led by Higlac, the Valorous, will face a force they know nothing about, especially in a land that has become accursed. Riding valiantly out of the Hadryan alp, Higlac and his soldiers soon meet their worst nightmare, battling a legion of monsters, clothed in the phantom of a traipsing gale. They only hit the passing wind not knowing what they hit. Unfortunately in their vanity, they are taken down one after the other till none is left to tell the story. After such an appalling debacle, a new army of knight is commissioned for the purge of Argon. From this point, the real adventure begins, replete with gory scenes, powerful actions, romantic tease, clanging swords, battle formations, stratagems, shrills and battle cry. Here is the best moment of ‘cinematographic’ writing you would not want to miss.

Understanding Learning and Motivation in Youth by Noemi Katznelson,Niels Ulrik Sørensen,Knud Illeris Summary

Through interviews with a selection of the most qualified and well-reputed Northern European researchers, Understanding Learning and Motivation in Youth explores, and offers a range of solutions to, one of the central problems in modern education: motivation for learning. The way that teaching is currently delivered to students aged 11–19 often does not support positive learning; the ongoing encouragement to produce as much competence as possible at the lowest possible costs elicits critical conditions for learning processes, endangering not only the motivation of students, but also the engagement and motivation of teachers themselves. This book examines how this can be handled in practice by teachers and educators, drawing on the perspectives of carefully selected experts to provide an introduction to the debates surrounding neoliberal education, as well as a means to counteract the damages in their everyday teaching and activities. With an original and accessible format and a unique insight into the thoughts of a select group of academics, Understanding Learning and Motivation is essential reading for students, researchers and academics studying the effects of neoliberal education, as well as practicing teachers and educational leaders who are attempting to combat the problem.

AutoCAD 2018 Instructor by James Leach,Shawna Lockhart,Eric Tilleson Summary

This book is your AutoCAD 2018 Instructor. The objective of this book is to provide you with extensive knowledge of AutoCAD, whether you are taking an instructor-led course or learning on your own. AutoCAD 2018 Instructor maintains the pedagogy and in-depth coverage that have always been the hallmark of the Leach texts. As the top-selling university textbook for almost a decade, the AutoCAD Instructor series continues to deliver broad coverage of AutoCAD in a structured, easy-to-comprehend manner. AutoCAD 2018 Instructor is command-oriented, just like AutoCAD. Chapters are structured around related commands, similar to the organization of AutoCAD’s menu system. The sequence of chapters starts with fundamental drawing commands and skills and then progresses to more elaborate procedures and specialized applications. The writing style introduces small pieces of information explained in simple form, and then builds on that knowledge to deliver more complex drawing strategies, requiring a synthesis of earlier concepts. Over 2000 figures illustrate the commands, features, and ideas. AutoCAD 2018 Instructor is an ideal reference guide, unlike tutorial-oriented books where specific information is hard to relocate. Because these chapters focus on related commands, and complete coverage for each command is given in one place, the commands, procedures, and applications are easy to reference. Tabbed pages help locate tables, lists, appendices, and the comprehensive index.

History and Silence by Charles W. Hedrick, Jr. Summary

The ruling elite in ancient Rome sought to eradicate even the memory of their deceased opponents through a process now known as damnatio memoriae. These formal and traditional practices included removing the person's name and image from public monuments and inscriptions, making it illegal to speak of him, and forbidding funeral observances and mourning. Paradoxically, however, while these practices dishonored the person's memory, they did not destroy it. Indeed, a later turn of events could restore the offender not only to public favor but also to re-inclusion in the public record. This book examines the process of purge and rehabilitation of memory in the person of Virius Nicomachus Flavianus(?-394). Charles Hedrick describes how Flavian was condemned for participating in the rebellion against the Christian emperor Theodosius the Great—and then restored to the public record a generation later as members of the newly Christianized senatorial class sought to reconcile their pagan past and Christian present. By selectively remembering and forgetting the actions of Flavian, Hedrick asserts, the Roman elite honored their ancestors while participating in profound social, cultural, and religious change.
