Summary:

"Small-scale, family fishing enterprises manage to persist despite a range of difficult economic and ecological changes and disruptions. Red Flags and Lace Coiffes is an ... ethnography that explores how and why family-based fishing enterprises continue in the face of what seem to be overwhelming odds. Using historical ethnography as a lens through which to understand how the fishers and their families of the Bigouden region in France have situated themselves over time, Charles R. Menzies argues that local identity plays an important role as global capitalist pressures force these fishing communities to reorganize or disappear entirely. Throughout, the book touches on key concepts such as identity, culture, globalization, kinship, work, the environment, and the economy."--Publisher's description.

Summary:

Unique ready reference for all complementary medicine, massage therapy and manual therapy practitioners and students alerting them to ‘red flag’ symptoms which should be referred for Western medical investigation or emergency medical treatment. When can a patient be safely reassured and when do they need further investigation or treatment? ‘Red flags’ are clinical signs that suggest a patient needs prompt investigation and treatment for a potentially dangerous situation. Therapists increasingly find themselves working alongside conventionally trained doctors and nurses and it is vital for them to understand conventional medical diagnoses, symptoms and treatments and, crucially, to recognise warning signs of serious disease. This is essential in order to be a safe practitioner. Clare Stephenson’s The Complementary Therapist’s Guide to Red Flags and Referrals meets this need by providing an easily accessible reference to ‘red flag’ symptoms, designed especially for therapists. It offers guidance on how best to respond to those symptoms and signs of disease which can be readily discerned through routine history taking and basic examination of the body. The guidance is in language which is accessible to therapists, and clear advice is offered on when to refer patients to conventional medicine practitioners and how to communicate with doctors when making a referral. Clinical syndromes which merit rapid response are summarised for ease of reference.

Army cop Erik Rider prefers to fight his war in the saloons and streets of Saigon. When he is sent to disrupt a Vietcong opium operation deep in the jungle, he could not be less interested. But when Rider lands in Cheo Reo, things get complicated. The American outpost is home to battle-hardened soldiers, intelligence operatives, and profiteers of all stripes. Meanwhile, Vietcong battalions are massing in the hills, and sixty thousand Montagnard tribespeople are advancing with the goal of reclaiming their mountain homeland. With a bounty on his head, Rider must hunt for the opium smugglers, avoid enemy patrols, and defend the undermanned U.S. base. As he closes in on the smuggling operation, he discovers that someone inside the base has a stake in it, and is willing to kill to protect that stake.

Lenny Schneider is hired to protect a client from vague threats delivered with cut-and-paste notes. In the process, he discovers a plot to kill seemingly-random victims connected only by old age. Schneider finds a possible motive in the contents of a long-dead writer's journal, and gets caught in the web of a fifty-year old political vendetta having its roots in the anti-communist hysteria of the 1940s and 1950s. Then he realizes that all the deaths involve the color red. As he closes in on the truth, his whole life is threatened with extinction, and the Red Scare ceases to be only a term in the history books.

Summary:

The author's knack for writing natural conversational dialogue makes reading easy and pleasurable. Average Americans battling with their own daily struggles find themselves in the middle of a terrorist plot to poison their local water supply. Set in a small town in the south, the battle could take place anywhere in America. Relate and feel empathy for characters as they draw from their own life experiences in an effort to save themselves. Extreme faith from one could save all if they trust, as he does, in the belief that good will always overcome evil. An ordinary day in the lives of the characters is suddenly filled with extraordinary circumstances. With numbing fear ever present, bravery surfaces in life and death situations from normally uncourageous people. The events are not only feasible with today's threat of terrorist attack but similar scenarios are probable. Complacent, needing a major break to keep his house of cards from falling, in romance and finance, John prays for guidance, but would not have chosen the path that opens for him.

Summary:

Not all suspicious red flags mean trouble. Not all benign red flags mean innocence. This little book shares one hundred red flags ranging from seemingly innocent or even accidental to full-blown lies. It's amazing how many people in love will overlook the obvious red flags that we all know about. Flags about cell phone behaviour, erasing phone history, shutting down the computer. Everyone believes, "Oh, s/he would never do that to me. That's for other people." The fact you're reading this must mean something is making you feel uneasy. You need to trust your gut. More important, if you find yourself playing detective in your relationship, there are serious trust issues at play and that alone is a red flag. Realize that you are worth honesty and respect. Don't accept anything less.

Summary:

“I was a prisoner before the war; I am no freer now after the war.” This memoir of an Iraqi soldier writing under a pseudonym uses “red flags” as a metaphor for military targets during his country’s invasion by the United States in 2003. He recounts his involvement in Saddam Hussein’s army under threat of execution, and says danger came as much from the suspicious Iraqi government as from American invaders. Even the fall of Baghdad and the Hussein government has not led to a better life for his people, whom he says are still divided by war.

Summary:

This book delves into risks that can easily bedevil any psychotherapist and what can happen if they are ignored. Dramatic storytelling, based on actual incidents from the author’s experiences as a member of ethics committees and as an ethics teacher and consultant, explores actions prompting clients to issue formal complaints. Set in the context of an ethics committee meeting over the course of a weekend, twelve psychologists face their peers who will stand in judgment. Issues include the fallout from losing one’s temper with a difficult client, a personal disclosure gone terribly wrong, a bartering arrangement that literally falls apart, a private life revealed in a most public way, a vengeful act that sullies the reputation of an entire department, breaking confidentiality when a client threatened harm, and the slippery slope to sexual exploitation. The stories are absorbing, enlightening, sometimes shocking, and often stranger than fiction. Narrative nonfiction puts human faces and emotions on what would otherwise be cursory statistics. What led to the formal complaint from both the vantage point of the complainant and the psychologist offers insights not otherwise available unless the dynamics of their private lives leading up to the conflict are revealed. An author’s commentary and discussion questions follow every story. Both new and seasoned practitioners, as well as those still in training, will find this to be an invaluable resource.

Summary:

The Complementary Therapist's Guide to Conventional Medicine is a unique textbook for students and practitioners of complementary medicine, offering a systematic comparative approach to Western and Eastern medicine. Practitioners of complementary medicine increasingly find themselves working alongside conventionally trained doctors and nurses and it is vital for them to develop a core understanding of conventional medical language and philosophy. The book is designed as a guide to understanding conventional medical diagnoses, symptoms and treatments, whilst also encouraging the reader to reflect on and translate how these diagnoses may be interpreted from a more holistic medical perspective. Throughout the text the practitioner/student is encouraged to see that conventional and more holistic interpretations are not necessarily contradictory, but instead are simply two different approaches to interpreting the same truth, that truth being the patient's symptoms. After introductory sections on physiology, pathology and pharmacology, there follow sections devoted to each of the physiological systems of the body. In these, the physiology of each system is explored together with the medical investigation, symptoms and treatments of the important diseases which might affect that system. As each disease is described, the reader is encouraged to consider the corresponding Chinese medical perspective. The textbook concludes with chapters relating specifically to dealing with patients in practice. In particular these focus on warning signs of serious disease, supporting patients on medication and ethical issues which may arise from management of patients which is shared with conventional practitioners. The book also offers a detailed summary of 'Red Flag symptoms' which are those which should be referred for 'Western' medical investigation or emergency medical treatment, and also a guide to how patients can be safely supported in withdrawing from conventional medication, when this is clinically appropriate. Those wishing to use the text for systematic study can make use of the question and problem-solving approach offered on the accompanying CD to which references to self study exercises appear at regular stages throughout the book. This means that the text can be easily adapted to form the basis of a study course in clinical medicine for students of complementary medicine. In addition to the self-testing questions and answers, the supporting CD also contains checklists for revision and full-colour illustrations. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Clare Stephenson is a qualified medical practitioner who worked in hospital medicine, general practice and public health medicine for a number of years before training in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture. Over the course of a decade she developed and taught an undergraduate course for students of Chinese medicine on Western medicine and how it relates to TCM. She is particularly committed to encouraging communication and understanding between practitioners of different health disciplines. She currently works as a GP in Oxfordshire.

Summary:

A trusted economic commentator provides a penetrating account of the threats to China's continued economic rise Under President Xi Jinping, China has become a large and confident power both at home and abroad, but the country also faces serious challenges. In this critical take on China’s future, economist George Magnus explores four key traps that China must confront and overcome in order to thrive: debt, middle income, the Renminbi, and an aging population. Looking at the political direction President Xi Jinping is taking, Magnus argues that Xi’s authoritarian and repressive philosophy is ultimately not compatible with the country’s economic aspirations. Thorough and well researched, the book also investigates the potential for conflicts over trade, China’s evolving relationship with Trump, and the country’s attempt to win influence and control in Eurasia through the Belt and Road initiative.

Summary:

Sure he's gorgeous, funny, and charming--but early in any doomed relationship there are warning signals foretelling the bad news to come. Studies show that most women will try to justify these signs, excusing them so they don't interfere with their fantasy of having met the perfect man. Unfortunately, such signs are usually all too prophetic--they are the essence of what Drs. Gary Aumiller and Daniel Goldfarb call "Red Flags." The question then becomes how to detect and respond to a Red Flag before it's too late. This first-of-its-kind book will help readers determine a man's all-important "loser potential" within the first three dates. Each chapter includes a profile of a different loser, a post-date quiz to help you determine if Mr. Right is Mr. Wrong, and important information about the best way to break up with him. Red Flags has all the fun of a magazine quiz combined with the expertise of psychologists who specialize in the techniques used by the police to profile criminals. They know how to spot the rejects--and now you will, too!
