SANCTUS by David T Williams Summary

Even a cursory glance at the moral state of society, and regrettably, often including the Church, shows a remarkable lack of holiness. Yet God commanded us to be holy, as he is holy. Is not the lack of holiness at the root of much of the weakness of today's church? This in-depth study of sanctification centres on what God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, has done to make us holy, and what the Christian response should be. It understands sanctification as both demanded by, and dependent upon justification, an ongoing process coupled with distinct events of grace. Christ has died for us to enable forgiveness; sanctification is the development of the life of Christ in us. A feature of the book is its provision of several illustrations of the path of Christian sanctification.

Sanctus Fumigagi by Todd Bash Summary

Todd Bash is among the most adventurous and uncompromising playwrights in the world today. Often shattering the conventions of traditional theatre, and overflowing with dream-like imagery, his style recalls the experiments of the Paris Surrealists during the 1920s, as well as writers such as Alfred Jarry, Bertolt Brecht and Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz. SANCTUS FUMIGACI - Collected Works Volume 2 brings together eight of Bash's most challenging plays, spanning the years 1989 through 2005. Provocative, haunting and deeply personal, they are necessary reading for anyone with a serious interest in contemporary theatre, the avant-garde and surrealism. QUOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: "As a writer, I attempt to delve beyond external reality, and touch something deep within myself. I want to express a human being's inner reality in a completely honest and uninhibited manor, with all of its brutality, and all of its innocence; all of its darkness, and all of its beauty. To create an analogy, a couple of years ago I spent some time in the Amazon jungle. I found the jungle, and Nature itself, completely free. At times its chaos was overwhelming, filled with a violent ferocity. But it was also pure, almost innocent, and incredibly moving. This is how I view the imagination, as well, and what I strive to capture with my writing and creative projects."

Redemption a Novelette; Sanctus a Play in Two Acts by Neil Baker Summary

In the transition between childhood and adulthood, there is a journey that all human beings must undertake in order to discover the essence of change. The novelette Redemption explores the very shadowy region wherein one’s identity is replaced by elements unfamiliar, mysterious, and alluring to the consciousness of oneself, where the shedding of pseudo security is replaced by the perplexity of instinctual discovery. Existence begins in the middle of a great dilemma that serves as the driving force of the two-act play, Sanctus. Three castoffs fall into a verbal battle of wits as they struggle to find the purpose behind their desolation. In exchanges of dialogue that consist of absurdity and pathos, each character combats one another with unique interpretations of the crisis at hand in order to reach the sound conclusion: Does death involve rebirth?

Three Cartularies from Thirteenth Century Auxerre by Constance Bouchard Summary

This edition presents the recently rediscovered episcopal cartulary of Auxerre, composed in the 1280s but assumed lost since the French Revolution. Along with confirmations by popes, quarrel settlements with counts, and agreements with the bishop’s tenants, the cartulary contains documents that were previously unknown, notably several papal decisions. Auxerre was unusually well documented for the period 800–1200, but little information on the bishopric’s history after 1200 has been available until now. The text contains a wealth of information about relationships between church leaders and other churches, between churches and secular leaders, and details on peasant rights and obligations. This edition also includes the short thirteenth-century cartularies of the nuns of St.-Julien and of the cathedral chapter, the latter existing only in fragmentary form. With full annotation of people and places and English-language summaries, these cartularies make a valuable contribution to our understanding of this significant episcopal centre’s history.

Sanctus by Toyne Simon Summary

Worship Wars in Early Lutheranism by Joseph Herl Summary

How important was music to Martin Luther? Drawing on hundreds of liturgical documents, contemporary accounts of services, books on church music, and other sources, Joseph Herl rewrites the history of music and congregational song in German Lutheran churches. Herl traces the path of music and congregational song in the Lutheran church from the Reformation to 1800, to show how it acquired its reputation as the "singing church." In the centuries after its founding, in a debate that was to have a strong impact on Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries, the Lutheran church was torn over a new style of church music that many found more entertaining than devotional. By the end of the eighteenth century, Lutherans were trying to hold their own against a new secularism, and many members of the clergy favored wholesale revision or even abandonment of the historic liturgy in order to make worship more relevant in contemporary society. Herl paints a vivid picture of these developments, using as a backdrop the gradual transition from a choral to a congregational liturgy. The author eschews the usual analyses of musical repertoire and deals instead with events, people and ideas, drawing readers inside the story and helping them sense what it must have been like to attend a Lutheran church in the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Parallel developments in Catholic churches are discussed, as are the rise of organ accompaniment of hymns and questions of musical performance practice. Although written with academic precision, the writing is clear and comprehensible to the nonspecialist, and entertaining anecdotes abound. Appendixes include translations of several important historical documents and a set of tables outlining the Lutheran mass as presented in 172 different liturgical orders. The bibliography includes 400 Lutheran church orders and reports of ecclesiastical visitations read by the author.

Words by Ernst van den Hemel,Asja Szafraniec Summary

It is said that words are like people: One can encounter them daily yet never come to know their true selves. This volume examines what words are—how they exist—in religious phenomena. Going beyond the common idea that language merely describes states of mind, beliefs, and intentions, the book looks at words in their performative and material specificity. The contributions in the volume develop the insight that our implicit assumptions about what language does guide the way we understand and experience religious phenomena. They also explore the possibility that insights about the particular status of religious utterances may in turn influence the way we think about words in our language.

The Parson's Handbook, 12th Edition by Percy Dearmer Summary

The Parson's Handbook, first published in 1899, is Dearmer's brotherly advice to fellow churchmen about the correct way to conduct proper and fitting English worship, concerned with general principles of ritual and ceremonial, but the emphasis is squarely on the side of art and beauty in worship. He was the author of books and pamphlets on church art and history and editor of the hymnbook Songs of Praise in 1931. The Parson's Handbook ran into many editions, and he devised The English Hymnal to which composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst contributed. In The Parson's Handbook, Dearmer states in the introduction that his goal is to help in "remedying the lamentable confusion, lawlessness, and vulgarity which are conspicuous in the Church at this time." What follows is an exhaustive delineation, sparing no detail, of the young priest's ideas on how liturgy can be conducted in a proper Catholic and English manner.
