Soulmates by , Summary

"For anyone who has ever suspected something sinister lurking behind the craze of new-age spirituality, Jessica Grose has crafted just the tale for you. With the delicious bite of satire and the page-turning satisfaction of a thriller, Soulmates is a deeply compelling, funny and sharply observed look at just how far we will go to achieve inner peace."—Lena Dunham A clever, timely novel about a marriage, and infidelity, the meaning of true spirituality, perception and reality from the author of Sad Desk Salad, in which a scorned ex-wife tries to puzzle out the pieces of her husband’s mysterious death at a yoga retreat and their life together. It’s been two years since the divorce, and Dana has moved on. She’s killing it at her law firm, she’s never looked better, thanks to all those healthy meals she cooks, and she’s thrown away Ethan’s ratty old plaid recliner. She hardly thinks about her husband—ex-husband—anymore, or about how the man she’d known since college ran away to the Southwest with a yoga instructor, spouting spiritual claptrap that Dana still can’t comprehend. But when she sees Ethan’s picture splashed across the front page of the New York Post—"Nama-Slay: Yoga Couple Found Dead in New Mexico Cave"—Dana discovers she hasn’t fully let go of Ethan or the past. The article implies that it was a murder-suicide, and Ethan’s to blame. How could the man she once loved so deeply be a killer? Restless to find answers that might help her finally to let go, Dana begins to dig into the mystery surrounding Ethan’s death. Sifting through the clues of his life, Dana finds herself back in the last years of their marriage . . . and discovers that their relationship—like Ethan’s death—wasn’t what it appeared to be. A novel of marriage, meditation, and all the spaces in between, Soulmates is a page-turning mystery, a delicious satire of our feel-good spiritual culture, and a nuanced look at contemporary relationships by one of the sharpest writers working today.

Soulmates by Carolyn Godschild Miller Summary

In her lively and conversational style, Carolyn Miller takes a high-spirited, unsentimental, in-depth look at what a soulmate is and how to connect with that special person. Sharing her own quest and that of dozens of other couples for a meant-to-be relationship, she uses true and extraordinary stories to illustrate what she means by inner guidance. Contrary to popular belief, soulmate couples do not usually recognize each other at first glance: When Roma was but eight years old, she risked her life daily by bringing food to Herman, who was interred in a Nazi concentration camp. They later met repeatedly while both lived in Israel, but it was not until nine years later that they met in New York and recognized that they were soulmates. Karen, a beautiful and successful pop singer, met Pat by handing him her card as she passed him in the street and asking him to "call me." They became fast friends, but neither felt that they were "right for each other." It was only after they put aside their preconceived ideas of what their ideal partner would be like that they became soulmates. Pedro and Elizabeth first met as they passed one another in a psychiatrist's office. Their therapist felt that they had a past-life connection but ethically could do nothing to bring them together. They met again while waiting for a plane, and discovered they were soulmates. Each chapter ends with guidelines for actualizing a soulmate relationship, which provide a practical aid to the reader who wishes to find his or her own "relationship made in heaven."

Moore moves love off the fast track and into the realm of mystery and imagination where it belongs.”—New Woman “An eloquent, passionate, often mystical exploration of how we mere mortals might better understand ourselves and others in a society in which so much emphasis is placed on interpersonal dynamics and so little on introspection, care, grace, gratitude, and honor.”—Detroit News

Soulmates by Juliana Geran Pilon Summary

In Soulmates: Resurrecting Eve, Juliana Geran Pilon argues for a return to an egalitarian view of men and women, found in the original Genesis narrative, as reflected through Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In each of these Abrahamic traditions, it was understood that man and woman were created to be soulmates in God's image-equal despite their different functions within society. Pilon writes that this original message has gradually been distorted, with disastrous effect. Any hope for an ennobling human community begins by resurrecting Eve as an equal partner to Adam. The work examines the Biblical creation narrative, comparing it to Greek and other ancient mythologies. Pilon explains how the disturbing association of woman with sin and death led to Eve's demise as Adam's equal. The final section of the work deals with the Goddess myth, love and marriage in early religious narratives, and modern man's search for his soul no less than for a soulmate. The book, at its core, is a meditation on the relationship between men and women but also among human beings. The resurrection of Eve is indispensable to attaining a true appreciation of love and faith. Pilon uses religious texts, expert commentary, and various works of fiction, poetry, and psychology to make her argument come alive. The work is strengthened by the writing style, alternately poetic and humorous, and a clear and illuminating progression of ideas. Its emphasis on reconciliation and understanding, and its post-feminist outlook will find a receptive audience.

Soulmates by Jyoti Gupta Summary

It took me a couple of hours to gain the energy to get up. Reluctantly, I left my bed and headed to the shower. I closed my eyes, enjoying the warmth of the hot water running down my skin. Blood pooled on the bathroom floor, washing off from my body. I gasped loudly as a bullet whizzed past me, missing my head by a very slight margin. Somebody close by screamed loudly, jolting me awake. I had slumped against the wall and dozed off because of the heavy doses. The shower was still on and clear water ran down. I looked around, dazed. There were no signs of blood or bullets. I hurriedly got out of the bathroom. I need to get out of the house as soon as possible to remain sane. Everybody has a past; everyone lies; there’s a secret love hidden in every heart. But it looks like Veronica has more than her mysterious smile. How far are you willing to go for your love? How much would you deceive? What can you do to be with the love of your life? Can you die? Can you kill?

From Strange Bedfellows to Soulmates: Psychoanalysis as an Allegory of Weimar Cinema by Irene Fowlkes Summary

Essay from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: A, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: application of the science of psychology to the study of culture. The screening of the movie Secrets of a Soul on the birthday of the founding father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud in Berlin demonstrated the initial point of convergence between one of the most important and influential psychological theories of the 20th century and film production. Although Freud did not consider the cinematic medium as appropriate to fully explain the abstract concepts of psychoanalysis, which the film attempts by means of a case study concerning a patient’s treatment, there apparently occurred some sort of transference process between the analyst and the artists. Thus, by mutually reinforcing each other, both discourses gained legitimacy making it worthwhile to further examine this relationship. G.W. Pabst’s 1926 film, Secrets of a Soul (Geheimnisse einer Seele), is one such encounter, a chapter in the still unwritten and untheorized metahistory of psychoanalysis and cinema. This paper aims to make a contribution to that metahistorical text, proposing a combination of abstract analytical thought and popular entertainment during the Weimar Cinema period. In agreement with the notion, that “the ready appeal of cinema as an analogy for mental processes brings about the danger of the loss of the specificity of psychoanalytic understanding”3, I will not try to equate the two discourses, but rather follow two objectives: First, utilize psychoanalytic theory as an instrument for strategic interpretation of the story / plot of a particular film and second, attempt to crystallize out the way it corresponds with cinematic representation. In regards to the latter aspect I operate under the assumption, that the creative process of film making entails a big part of the unconscious and thus lends itself to psychoanalytic interpretation. Although in contrast to Secrets of a Soul it does not deal with the method of psychoanalysis directly, I chose the movie The Cabinet of Dr Caligari for this paper, because I suppose that it contains various elements of the conceptual framework of the theory which comes about in narrative and visual terms. Primarily leaning onto a core text in the history of German film, written by the Marxian representative Krakauer, I will thus treat the movie as an allegory of psychoanalysis in general and try to see to what extent it can be considered a reflection of the so called collective unconscious. Soulmates from the Pages of History by Jack Adler Summary

Writer Jack Adler describes 75 famous friendships throughout history from mythical to contemporary times. Along the way, the lives and personalities of artists, politicians, philosophers, soldiers, and outlaws are outlined, including some personal details that may not be well-known. Presenting sketches of individuals like Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony, Adam Smith and David Hume, Charles Baudelaire and Edouard Manet, David Henry Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, Susan Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Vladimir Horowitz — even Al Capone and Johnny Torrio — the author shows how contrasting as well as comparable personalities, characters and temperaments can support and strengthen each other, and he explores the range of ties that may influence a person during one phase of life or may become the center of one's life altogether. The book examines the peculiar power of the bonds of friendship and provides illuminating details on how major friendships throughout history emerged and developed — or fell apart. Each friendship, and the respective personalities of the pairings or groups, is carefully placed in the context of its historical period. The material is accurate and written in an easy-to-read style. Illustrations of the personalities, and many of their quotes, embellish the text.

Soul Mates by W. Bradford Wilcox,Nicholas H. Wolfinger Summary

In 1994, David Hernandez, a small-time drug-dealer in Spanish Harlem, got out of the drug business and turned his life over to God. After he joined Victory Chapel-a vibrant Bronx-based Pentecostal church-he saw his life change in many ways: today he is a member of the NYPD, married, the father of three, and still an active member of his church. David Hernandez is just one of the many individuals whose stories inform Soul Mates, which draws on both national surveys and in-depth interviews to paint a detailed portrait of the largely positive influence exercised by churches on relationships and marriage among African Americans and Latinos-and whites as well. Soul Mates shines a much-needed spotlight on the lives of strong and happy minority couples. Wilcox and Wolfinger find that both married and unmarried minority couples who attend church together are significantly more likely to enjoy happy relationships than black and Latino couples who do not regularly attend. They argue that churches serving these communities promote a code of decency encompassing hard work, temperance, and personal responsibility that benefits black and Latino families. Wilcox and Wolfinger provide a compelling look at faith and family life among blacks and Latinos. The book offers a wealth of critical insight into the effect of religion on minority relationships, as well as the unique economic and cultural challenges facing African American and Latino families in twenty-first-century America.

Near-death experiences have brought Herb and DiAnnie to a new understanding and appreciation for life. Helping others unconditionally and giving love through the word of God. You're free, you know, get some rest and let it go, and do not think of me, follow the path that God has laid for you and me. When we had taken God's hand and heard God's call. We came together to laugh, love, work, and to play. Accepted God's grace that brought us together this way. We found that piece at the close of each day. Our parting has not left a void for a reason, we remember the joy. A friendship shared, laughing, and a kiss that we look forward to one day. Oh yes, these things we do miss. However, we are not burdened with a time we have spent together through God's holy grace, and all the things we have in common that have brought us together one day. My friend, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow that will show you happiness and no sorrow. My life's been full and savored a dream of this love of my friend, and the good times one day will never draw to an end. A tear, a touch, our hearts that felt so much. Perhaps our time together seems so long, and we do not lengthen it now with our miraculous belief. We lift our spirits with peace for one another, and together.
