Stranded by Bracken MacLeod Summary

In the spirit of John Carpenter's The Thing and Jacob's Ladder comes Stranded -- a terrifying, icebound thriller where nothing is quite what it seems by Bracken MacLeod. Badly battered by an apocalyptic storm, the crew of the Arctic Promise find themselves in increasingly dire circumstances as they sail blindly into unfamiliar waters and an ominously thickening fog. Without functioning navigation or communication equipment, they are lost and completely alone. One by one, the men fall prey to a mysterious illness. Deckhand Noah Cabot is the only person unaffected by the strange force plaguing the ship and her crew, which does little to ease their growing distrust of him. Dismissing Noah's warnings of worsening conditions, the captain of the ship presses on until the sea freezes into ice and they can go no farther. When the men are ordered overboard in an attempt to break the ship free by hand, the fog clears, revealing a faint shape in the distance that may or may not be their destination. Noah leads the last of the able-bodied crew on a journey across the ice and into an uncertain future where they must fight for their lives against the elements, the ghosts of the past and, ultimately, themselves. Stranded by Anne Bishop,Anthony Francis,James Alan Gardner Summary

On the edge, all things are possible... From Stranded, by Anthony Francis She crested a ridge overlooking the wreck--and froze, bewitched. Climbing from the ship were the most beautiful people she'd ever seen. They wore armored spacesuits, patched in a thousand places, and painted to look like animals. Helmets folded back revealed inner pressure suits decorated too: one girl in a leopard outersuit had a snakeskin helm, adorned with feathers, over skin painted a pale blue. Serendipity gasped. These were adventurers. The gravity was clearly punishing their slender frames, but they kept going, crawling out of the smoking ship from every hatch, rappelling down on spacelines, tools jangling on their belts when their boots touched the broken earth. Not one of them looked a day over sixteen. That should have meant nothing--her grandmother didn't look a day over sixteen--but as fractured shale dislodged by her slogs crackled down the slope, they turned and stared at her with youthful shock. They had none of the smug poise of ancient souls newly young. What Serendipity saw instead, and felt keenly, was fear. Her gut churned. The boys were armed with projectile automatics. ? Three Great Authors--Three Great Science Fiction Stories A Strand In The Web New York Times Bestselling Fantasy Author Anne Bishop makes her U.S. debut in Science Fiction with this engaging futuristic novella. The Restorers travel the universe fulfilling a purpose handed down through the generations. They live and die aboard city-ships, never knowing the worlds they create and save. What begins as a disastrous training exercise in creating and balancing ecosystems becomes an unexpected fight for survival. The only hope may be the secret project of an untried Restorer team. A Host Of Leeches Award winning author James Alan Gardner pens a wonderfully imaginative tale, in which a young woman wakes to find herself the sole human on an orbiting, mechanical space station. To find a way home, she must navigate the dangerous politics of war between opposing robot leaders. Stranded Encyclopedias, 1700–2000 by Linn Holmberg,Maria Simonsen Summary

In Stranded Encyclopedias, 1700–2000: Exploring Unfinished, Unpublished, Unsuccessful Encyclopedic Projects, fourteen scholars turn to the archives to challenge the way the history of modern encyclopedism has long been told. Rather than emphasizing successful publications and famous compilers, they explore encyclopedic enterprises that somehow failed. With a combined attention to script, print, and digital cultures, the volume highlights the many challenges facing those who have pursued complete knowledge in the past three hundred years. By introducing the concepts of stranded and strandedness, it also provides an analytical framework for approaching aspects often overlooked in histories of encyclopedias, books, and learning: the unpublished, the unfinished, the incomplete, the unsuccessfully disseminated, and the no-longer-updated. By examining these aspects in a new and original way, this book will be of value to anyone interested in the history of encyclopedism and lexicography, the history of knowledge, language, and ideas, and the history of books, writing, translating, and publishing. He'd love to just forget her--but something won't let him. And he can't help but worry about her as they are heading into more remote regions of Alaska and eventually into foreign waters. Something sinister is going on, and the deeper they push, the more Gage fears they've only discovered the tip of the iceberg. Clever is accepted at a university in Tennessee where he will study Business. In an attempt to cut costs and ignorant of what lies ahead, he agrees to a farewell party by his family and friends before obtaining his student visa. This decision turns out to be a horrendous nightmare. He is denied a visa ten times and is finally granted one at the eleventh trial. On arrival in New York and Tennessee, he experiences huge culture shock as he settles into American society. Four weeks into classes, he learns his sponsor is unable to support him financially. Because he is on a student visa, he cannot work off campus and does not qualify for loans and financial aid opportunities available to indigenous students and Green Card holders. He goes without eating on many occasions. The physical and emotional pain are so severe that he wants to crawl out of his skin. He is so determined to succeed that the hardship cannot stop him. The graduation day comes, and Clever and his girlfriend, Ayanna, graduate with honors. He is the valedictorian and presents a moving speech. He challenges his fellow graduates to seize the moment and to never forget God and others who will help them through life. Dealing with his dad’s loss right after graduation is daunting for him. The feeling of abandonment is intensified as he cannot make it home. He breaks up with Ayanna prior to entering graduate school. He misses Ayanna during his grief; he knows having her with him would make a difference. He blames himself for her absence during such a tormenting phase in his young adult life. He still loves Ayanna and is not sure if he is ever going to see her again. A year after graduate school, Clever meets Rosita at a leadership conference in Paris, and they exchange contact information. They date for four months before they abruptly marry. Rosita gets pregnant and drops out of medical school without consulting with Clever. He is in shock as the magnitude of his mistakes begins to slowly form in his mind. Months into the pregnancy, an ultrasound reveals they are having twins. He starts looking for a higher paying job to better prepare for the babies financially. He faces rejection after rejection. Five weeks after the birth of the babies, Clever loses his job. He struggles financially for more than a year before he finds another job. Following years of aloofness, discomposure, and blatant disdain, frustration begins to break down their marriage. Six years into the rocky marriage, Rosita secretly flies to Brazil for a cosmetic procedure. She dies in the process. The children shed tears when they see their mother in a coffin for the last time at the funeral service. Rosita is given a dignified funeral service. Clever becomes very sorrowful and starts blaming himself, pondering if there is something that he could have done to have prevented her from making the trip. The children are now six years old; a difficult phase to grow up without their mother. Clever loves his children, and he has difficulty trusting another woman. He becomes a successful businessman after graduate school and money is no longer a problem. Through all of his achievements, he remains single. He intensifies his effort to find Ayanna, and he unexpectedly meets her again at his undergraduate school’s homecoming. He proposes to her, and she says yes. They have a dream wedding. She embraces and cares for Clever’s two children as if they were her biological children. She loves Clever’s mother as her own mother. Living with Ayanna is living in total peace and contentment; it is an experience like no other – one that words cannot sufficiently describe. It has always been Clever’s desire to one day return to his native land. Ayanna, now a cardiologist, is receptive to the idea and even encourages him to do so. They are now in Nigeria, and the family enjoys every minute of the opportunities to make a difference and change lives. Though Clever is sad for the loss of his children’s mother, he is reconnecting with Ayanna, his first love, who continues to improve his life for the better.

Stranded in Skin and Bones by Robert Stofel Summary

Stranded in Skin and Bones follows a boy's life from the day he routinely returns home from middle school to discover that his mother has fled her marriage, abandoned her children, and taken most of the furniture and belongings from their home. And out of this moment Stofel is left to face the world on his own, with less than no help from the adults in his life, and with all the help of his melancholy group of friends--Coconut, an orphan at the Baptist Children's home; and Jill, a Christian, who has a difficult time remaining faithful to her convictions. Through it all Stofel brings X-ray vision to this strip-search of the human soul and psyche, sparing no one--including himself. The result is a memoir packed with enough explosive scenes and quirky, dysfunctional souls--searching for purpose and meaning--that you will find yourself cheering for their utter survival. Always redemptive, sometimes hilarious and poignant, even disturbing, but fundamentally wise on the subjects of darkness and light, substance abuse and recovery, Stofel takes the human struggle to the streets of faith. It's an utterly fresh take on the painful process of redemption and our need for better education.
