Summary:

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (often shortened to Huck Finn) is a novel written by American humorist Mark Twain. It is commonly used and accounted as one of the first Great American Novels. It is also one of the first major American novels written using Local Color Regionalism, or vernacular, told in the first person by the eponymous Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, best friend of Tom Sawyer and hero of three other Mark Twain books. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. By satirizing Southern antebellum society that was already a quarter-century in the past by the time of publication, the book is an often scathing look at entrenched attitudes, particularly racism. The drifting journey of Huck and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, down the Mississippi River on their raft may be one of the most enduring images of escape and freedom in all of American literature.

Summary:

Seminar paper from the year 2000 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne, course: Racism in the American Novel, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn is an intriguing case in point. Not only are race and racism prominent issues in the novel, but they are also dealt with in a specific manner as Huck is the narrator whose eyes everything is seen through and whose language everything is presented in the text. According to Quirk, this has the advantage that "through the satirical latitude Huck's perspective on events permitted him, Twain could deal scathingly with his several hatreds and annoyances - racial bigotry, mob violence, self-righteousness, aristocratic pretense, venality, and duplicity." Nevertheless, this narrative strategy, which differs from focalization only in its use of the past tense, has led to a controversy about whether the novel is racist, anti-racist, or both. This point will be discussed in the final section of this paper.

Summary:

First published in 1884, Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a masterpiece of world literature. Narrated by Huck himself in his artless vernacular, it tells of his voyage down the Mississippi with a runaway slave named Jim. As the two journey downstream on a raft, Huck's vivid descriptions capture the sights, smells, sounds, and rhythms of life on the great river. As they encounter traveling actors, con men, lynch mobs, thieves, and Southern gentility, his shrewd comments reveal the dark side of human nature. By the end of the story, Huck has learned about the dignity and worth of human life and Twain has exposed the moral blindness of the "respectable" slave-holding society in which he lives. Huckleberry Finn was Twain's greatest creation.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" – Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother Sid. He skips school to swim and is made to whitewash the fence the next day as punishment. Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, but shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness a trio of body snatchers getting into a fight. Tom and Huck run away to an island. While enjoying their new-found freedom, they become aware that the community is sounding the river for their bodies… "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" – Huck Finn and his friend Tom Sawyer have each come into a considerable sum of money as a result of their earlier adventures. Huck is placed under the guardianship of the Widow Douglas, who is attempting to "sivilize" him. Finding civilized life confining, his spirits are raised somewhat when Tom helps him to escape one night, but his alcoholic father turns up and kidnaps him… "Tom Sawyer Abroad" – Tom, Huck, and their friend Jim set sail to Africa in a futuristic hot air balloon, where they survive encounters with lions, robbers, and fleas to see some of the world's greatest wonders, including the Pyramids and the Sphinx. "Tom Sawyer, Detective" – Tom attempts to solve a mysterious murder in this burlesque of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer.

The book was widely criticized upon release because of its extensive use of coarse language. Throughout the 20th century, and despite arguments that the protagonist and the tenor of the book are anti-racist, criticism of the book continued due to both its perceived use of racial stereotypes and its frequent use of the racial slur "nigger." ...........Mark Twain (November 30, 1835

Summary:

In a radical departure from standard editions, Twain's most famous novels are published here as the continuous narrative that the author originally envisioned. More controversial will be the decision by the editor, noted Mark Twain scholar Alan Gribben, to eliminate the pejorative racial labels that Twain employed in his effort to write realistically about social attitudes of the 1840s. Gribben points out that dozens of other editions currently make available the inflammatory words, but their presence has gradually diminished the potential audience for two of Twain's masterpieces. "Both novels can be enjoyed deeply and authentically without those continual encounters with the hundreds of now-indefensible racial slurs," Gribben explains.

Cover design is an original Liam Lawless."Huck travels down the Mississippi on a raft, facing many dangers on the way, and learning about life and what it means to be a friend. There are truths that Twain tries to get people to think about through this book. One is to make us laugh at some of the crazy things that we believe without any good reason to believe them; and the other is is to make us questionthe way that people thought about slaves at the time of the story, in America in the 1850s."
