Summary:

Drawing on a lifetime of Christian pilgrimage, David Adam reflects on biblical encounters with the divine and offers profound insights - on grief and glory, emptiness and fulfilment; repentance and forgiveness; loving and being loved - that will transform the way we live, and the way we relate to God, here and now. For example, God's question to Adam, 'Where are you?' is relevant to us all; Abraham's long journey of hearing and obeying (and learning the art of having no agenda) is ours too; Jacob's great discovery - that heaven is found on earth and earth is raised to heaven - helps us become aware that we often already possess what we think we're searching for; Moses' desert experiences of grief and glory encourage us that we journey forward to the Promised Land, while Elijah's powerlessness reminds us that God often calls us out of darkness and weakness, for we may need stillness to hear him.

Summary:

An Awesome Journey is a poignant story that is an uplifting reading experience filled with mystery, romance, and humor presented against a background of the exciting, extreme-life-extension-movement now going on in our world of face-paced advancements in technology. Handsome, sensual young man on his way to extreme success falls in love with beautiful High School Senior. They make plans for a wedding right after her graduation. The young beauty dies in a tragic accident shortly before the wedding day. The story of the young man continues until his death years later. Both lovers are revived 100 years later after a successful journey to the future thanks to the fast developing technology of cryonics, the technology of freezing people at legal death to be revived in the future when aging reversal is a common practice for humans. The author uses a very believable description of how cryonics works and transports people to the future. But this story is not just a typical time travel story, it is a powerful love story, with mystery and humor that will make you laugh out loud and then bring tears to your eyes. The author, David Pizer, first realized how short a lifetime is in 1953 when he was in sixth grade. Back then school girls had slumber parties in one of the girls bedrooms and boys had camp outs in one of the boys back yards. David and his friend Max set up a tent in Max's parents back yard and they were sitting there looking at the massive array of stars that filled the unpolluted, smog-free skies in Phoenix Arizona in 1953. Max's dad brought out 3 cups of hot chocolate and the three of them sat there sipping as Max's dad explained a lot about the stars, theories on the birth of the universe, and things like that. Max's dad was a professor at Phoenix Community College, while David was in sixth grade. When dad explained about the formation of a star and the billions of years they 'lived" David was mesmerized! Max and his dad then went back into the house to make some more hot chocolate and get some marshmallows, coat hangers a bag of charcoal and some matches, while they left David all alone in the backyard to gaze at the billions of bright stars in the sky, each one with a life-span of billions of years. As David sat there entranced in deep thought, a very sad feeling came over him. David realized that even if a person lived to be 100 years old, that on a cosmic scale a 100-year life span is a very, very brief time. Now David is convinced that only up to a 100-year life span may no longer be our sad fate, and the latest discoveries in life extension technology seem to suggest human aging may soon be reversible and quality life spans may reach much, much longer than 100 years. "An Awesome Journey" is the story, and an awesome journey is going to be the feeling you experience as you read this exciting, humorous, romantic novel.

Summary:

What does the Bible really say about money? About wealth? How much does God expect you to give to others? How does wealth affect your friendships, marriage, and children? How much is “enough”? There’s a lot of bad information in our culture today about wealth―and the wealthy. Worse, there’s a growing backlash in America against our most successful citizens, but why? To many, wealth is seen as the natural result of hard work and wise money management. To others, wealth is viewed as the ultimate, inexcusable sin. This has left many godly men and women confused about what to do with the resources God’s put in their care. They were able to build wealth using God’s ways of handling money, but then they are left feeling guilty about it. Is this what God had in mind?

Summary:

Late antiquity was a perilous time for children, who were often the first victims of economic crisis, war, and disease. They had a one in three chance of dying before their first birthday, with as many as half dying before age ten. Christian writers accordingly sought to speak to the experience of bereavement and to provide cultural scripts for parents who had lost a child. These late ancient writers turned to characters like Eve and Sarah, Job and Jephthah as models for grieving and for confronting or submitting to the divine. Jephthah's Daughter, Sarah’s Son traces the stories these writers crafted and the ways in which they shaped the lived experience of familial bereavement in ancient Christianity. A compelling social history that conveys the emotional lives of people in the late ancient world, Jephthah's Daughter, Sarah's Son is a powerful portrait of mourning that extends beyond antiquity to the present day.

Summary:

An eye-opening and fascinating slow travel journey from an acclaimed writer who circled the globe without ever leaving the ground. In this age of globalism and high-speed travel, Seth Stevenson, the witty, thoughtful Slate columnist, takes us back to a time when travel meant putting one foot in front of the other, racing to make connections between trains and buses in remote transit stations, and wading through the chaos that most long-haul travelers float 35,000 feet above. Stevenson winds his way around the world by biking, walking, hiking, riding in rickshaws, freight ships, cruise ships, ancient ferries, buses, and the Trans-Siberian Railway-but never gets on an airplane. He finds that from the ground, one sees the world anew-with a deeper understanding of time, distance, and the vastness of the earth. In this sensational travelogue, each step of the journey is an adventure, full of unexpected revelations in every new port, at every bend in the railroad tracks, and around every street corner.

#1 international bestseller Publishers Weekly bestseller The Globe and Mail (Toronto) The Toronto Star bestseller The Vancouver Sun bestseller From Neil Pasricha—New York Times, million-copy bestselling author of The Book of Awesome series and The Happiness Equation, thought leader for the next generation, and one of the most popular TED speakers in the world—comes a revelatory and inspiring book that will change the way we view failure and help us build resilience. We are lucky. For most of us, famine, plague, economic depression, and other life-threatening catastrophes are the stuff of history books. We’re living in an era with the highest-ever rates of longevity, education, and wealth. Cars drive us home as our phones entertain us before we arrive to food delivered to the front door. We have it all! But there’s just one side effect. We no longer have the tools to handle failure...or even perceived failure. When we fall, we lie on the sidewalk crying. When we spill, we splatter. When we crack, we shatter. We are turning into an army of porcelain dolls. A rude email from the boss means calling in sick. Only two likes on our post means we don’t have friends. Cell phones show us we’re never good enough. Yesterday’s butterflies are tomorrow’s panic attacks. Record numbers of students have clinical anxiety. And what about depression, loneliness, and suicide? All rising! What do we desperately need to learn? RESILIENCE. And we need to learn it fast. Read You Are Awesome to learn: • The single word that keeps your options open after failure • What every commencement speech gets wrong • 3 ways to dramatically accelerate your ability to learn and adapt • The 2-minute morning practice that helps eliminate worry • Why you need an Untouchable Day (and how to get one) • and much, much more... Because the truth is, you really are awesome.

Summary:

Part travel memoir and part philosophical look at why we travel, filled with stories of Matt Kepnes' adventures abroad, an exploration of wanderlust and what it truly means to be a nomad. "Matt is possibly the most well-traveled person I know...His knowledge and passion for understanding the world is unrivaled, and never fails to amaze me." —Mark Manson, New York Times bestselling author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck Ten Years a Nomad is New York Times bestselling author Matt Kepnes’ poignant exploration of wanderlust and what it truly means to be a nomad. Part travel memoir and part philosophical look at why we travel, it is filled with aspirational stories of Kepnes' many adventures. New York Times bestselling author of How to Travel the World on $50 a Day, Matt Kepnes knows what it feels like to get the travel bug. Wanderlust is a powerful thing. After quitting his 9-5 job more than ten years ago, he realized that living life meant more for him than simply meeting traditional milestones like buying a car, paying a mortgage, and moving up the career ladder. With almost nothing tangible to show for it after traveling over 500,000 miles and staying in 1,000 different hostels in 90 different countries, Matt has compiled his favorite stories and experiences in this travel manifesto to show a different side of life. Filled with the color and perspective that only hindsight and self-reflection can offer, these stories get to the real questions at the heart of wanderlust. Travel questions that transcend the basic "how-to," and plumb the depths of "why now" and "what for.” Ten Years a Nomad is for travel junkies, the travel-curious, and anyone interested in what you can learn about the world when you don’t have a cable bill for a decade or spend a month not wearing any shoes living on the beach for a few bucks a day.

Summary:

The Greek gods, goddesses, and heroes come alive as they fight, love, bicker, and give advice to confused human beings in these imaginative dialogues. It is easy to find their experiences and emotions reflected in our own lives. The author, Betty Mallett Smith, brings a trained philosophical mind, as well as a long study of Greek literature and art, to bear on the ancient myths. The work also reflects her deep experience of modern depth psychology, especially that of C. G. Jung.
