Summary:

A portrait of an age of both dazzling spirit and bitter disillusionment, based on the last drunken days of F. Scott Fitzgerald. The 1920s: a golden age, and Manley Halliday is a golden figure. Lauded by the critics, this great writer of the decade has everything - beauty, brilliance, wealth, and a strikingly lovely wife. But years later, in the very different atmosphere of the thirties, Halliday is a shadow of his former self, cast up on the inhospitable shores of Hollywood. When Shep, a young and ambitious Hollywood screenwriter, is partnered up with Halliday, he is awestruck to find himself working alongside a literary hero. Enlisted by movie mogul Victor Milgrim to co-write college musical Love on Ice, the pair embark on a journey to New York. But Shep may find that his vision of the great Manley Halliday fails to match up with the man himself ...

Summary:

My poems are ofttimes born from some great sadness. They usually speak of things that have been lost. They try to catch the soul and trap the memory To tell the story...true...and what the cost. I rhyme because it helps me to remember. I rhyme so I must measure every word. I rhyme to help those lost things live forever, In rhyming, lilting, steeped-in-meaning verse. Words can prevail past fl esh or thoughts or empires, And words can make souls live beyond the grave. So Man will ever know the wonder of them The courage that they showed...the joy they gave. Hopes And Dreams Hopes and dreams can inspire us, And give us reasons to go on. So even if they never do come true, They serve a purpose....

Summary:

"Leicester performs a full-scale revision of the 'dramatic way of reading Chaucer, ' the 'character-oriented, dramatic approaches' that continue to underlie many (perhaps most) current readings of Chaucer. His well-articulated approach to the Tales is informed by immersion in and understanding of current literary-critical theory. In fact, he makes an important intervention in critical theory (certainly in medieval literary criticism) in his project of 'recovering the subject' and theorizing its agency after the evacuation of individual subjectivity by structuralism. He operates in the knowledge that the human subject is a construct, however, a knowledge that structuralism provided; Leiscester's is thus best understood as a 'post-structuralist acitivity.' Along the way, he does brilliant close readings of thee major Tales--the Wife of Bath's, Pardoner's, and Knight's--and the General Prologue. Very few writers have asked of and gotten so much from Chaucer's texts."--Carolyn Dinshaw, author of Chaucer's Sexual Politics "A brilliant study of the nature of human subjectivity in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. It responds to some controversial issues in Chaucer criticism and to relevant questions in modern psychoanalytic, post-structuralist, and sociological theories of the self. It contributes to both Chaucer studies and modern theory by giving rich, nuanced, and fruitful readings of three tales. . . . Leicester's interpretations of the poems are original and compelling. Having read them, I find them indispensable."--Judith Ferster, author of Chaucer on Interpretation

Summary:

The only book to connect the everyday world of the 20-something undergraduate consumer with sound sociological analysis of the world of consumption Enchanting a Disenchanted World, Third Edition examines Disney, malls, cruise lines, Las Vegas, the world wide web, Planet Hollywood, credit cards, and all the other ways we now consume. Thoroughly updated to reflect the recent economic recession and the impact of the internet, bestselling author George Ritzer continues to explore this book’s central thesis: that our society has undergone fundamental change because of the way and the level at which we consume. This Third Edition demonstrates how we have created new "cathedrals" of consumption (places that enchant us so as to entice us to stay longer and consume more) while continuing to take capitalism to a new level. These places of consumption, whether in our homes, the mall, or cyberspace, are in a constant state of "enchanting the disenchanted," luring us through new spectacles because their rational qualities are both necessary and deadening at the same time. New and Hallmark Features Offers a unique analysis of the world of consumption, especially the settings in which consumption takes place Discusses the recent global economic recession throughout Offers rich details on consuming in such places as Las Vegas, Disney World, on cruise ships, in Wal-Mart, at McDonald’s, and, new to this edition, on the Web Includes a wide range of theoretical perspectives—Marxian, Weberian, critical theory, postmodern theory—as well as a number of concepts such as hyperconsumption, implosion, simulation, and time and space to show students how sociological theory can be applied to everyday phenomena

Summary:

Do Americans have too little confidence in government or do they have, perhaps, too much? What types of political protest suit a democratic society? These questions matter to citizens as well as to social scientists, particularly when so many of us have become cynical about politics. A Question of Loyalty attempts to answer these questions from the evidence provided by a specially designed survey to measure political alienation and political protest. Citizens can make two kinds of errors: they can be over-ready to yield to authority or over-ready to contest it. This study shows one way to tell who has too much faith in government and who has too little. How citizens think about authority—whether their evaluation of government is balanced or one-sided—matters in a democratic society. And demonstrating just how it matters, how it affects not only what citizens believe but what they actually do, is the object of this book. We are in the habit of thinking that a loss of citizen confidence weakens a democratic society, whereas unbounded trust in government bolsters it. But the quality of citizens’ judgment matters, too. Depending on whether their evaluation of government is balanced or not, citizens who are allegiant may threaten and those who are alienated may strengthen the spirit of democratic politics. Summary:

It's 1981 and Belfast is burning. So, too, is freshly widowed Bessie Halstone: she burns with a desire to break with her troubled past. With her feckless husband gone, she leaves home hurriedly with her naughty nine-year-old son, Herkie, and not much else. The Dentist, an IRA enforcer, is on her tail. He's convinced that Bessie, with her "yella hair all puffed up like Merlin Monroe's," has absconded with the takings from a bank heist. But car trouble strands mother and son in Tailorstown, a sleepy Ulster village. Bessie finds temporary work as housekeeper for the handsome and mysterious parish priest. In the meantime, Lorcan Strong, an artist and a native of the village, is summoned home. He's been shanghaied into forging paintings for the IRA. It's work he cannot refuse; his mother and their business are under threat. Yet things are not what they seem in quirky Tailorstown. There is a "sleeper" in the village. But who? Bizarrely, it is young Herkie, due to his childish curiosity, who unravels the mystery and saves the day.

Summary:

Written during the interwar years in Europe, when such modernist authors as Joyce, Woolf, Eliot, and Huxley were active, Charles Williams' Christian novels, with their unshakable faith in the power of Christian love, stand in sharp contrast to the disillusioned and disenchanted themes of literary modernism. In this thesis, I offer a close reading of three of Williams' early novels, War in Heaven (1930), Many Dimensions (1931), and The Greater Trumps (1932), and explicate the complex literary imagery Williams uses to convey his simple Christian maxim that Love (i.e., Christ) is the ultimate force at work within an enchanted and animistic universe. Ultimately, I argue that these three novels, known as the "talisman novels," form an intertextual trinity through which Williams evolves his three principles of Substitution, Exchange, and Coinherence into his mature doctrine of Romantic Theology.

Summary:

The two novels tell the story of Mara and her widowed father, Enrique Aracil, a physician, from her earliest years, sharing her life with family members and growing into womanhood. Her fathers involvement with the anarchist movement brings him in contact with a young fanatic Nilo Brull, who fails in a desperate attempt to assassinate the young king and his bride, throwing a bomb at their open carriage on their wedding day. Aracil is accused of abetting the bomber, and he and his daughter are forced to flee Madrid. The first novel follows the pair as they travel on foot and later on horseback through the countryside west of the city on their way to Portugal. The author describes in great detail all their adventures as they move from one town to the next, staying at inns and meeting the many characters on their way. It ends with their voyage by sea from Portugal to London. The second novel describes their stay in London, at a pension in Bloomsbury, and the various people they encounter while they remain in London. Baroja reveals the influence of his favorite author, Charles Dickens, throughout many picturesque scenes. When they consider its safe to return to Spain, they sail back, and Marie ends up marrying her cousin.

Summary:

One of Max Weber's contemporaries described him as 'a child of the Enlightenment born too late' whose work is a 'vitriolic attack on religion'. Subsequent Weber scholarship has largely affirmed this valuation of Weber and characterized his scholarship as a manifestation of the very disenchantment that Weber describes. In The Postmodern Significance of Max Weber's Legacy , Basit Koshul challenges this idea by showing Weber to be a postmodern thinker far ahead of his time.

Summary:

For the last two centuries, Western philosophy has developed in the shadow of Hegel, an influence each new thinker struggles to escape. As a consequence, Hegel’s absolute idealism has become the bogeyman of philosophy, obscuring the fact that he is the defining philosopher of the historical transition to modernity, a period with which our own times share startling similarities. Today, as global capitalism comes apart at the seams, we are entering a new period of transition. In Less Than Nothing, the product of a career-long focus on the part of its author, Slavoj Žižek argues it is imperative we not simply return to Hegel but that we repeat and exceed his triumphs, overcoming his limitations by being even more Hegelian than the master himself. Such an approach not only enables Žižek to diagnose our present condition, but also to engage in a critical dialogue with key strands of contemporary thought—Heidegger, Badiou, speculative realism, quantum physics, and cognitive sciences. Modernity will begin and end with Hegel. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Summary:

Colonia Hermosa, now considered a suburb of Oaxaca, began as a squatter settlement in the 1950s. The original residents came in search of transformation from migrants to urban citizens, struggling from rural poverty for the chance to be part of the global economy in Oaxaca. Cheleen Ann-Catherine Mahar charts the lives of a group of residents in Colonia Hermosa over a period of thirty years, as Mexico became more closely tied into the structures of global capital, and the residents of Colonia Hermosa struggled to survive. Residents shape their discussions within a larger narrative, and their talk is the language of the heroic individual, so necessary to the ideology and the functioning of capital. However, this logic only tenuously connects to the actual material circumstances of their lives. Mahar applies the theories of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to her data from Mexico in order to examine the class trajectories of migrant families over more than three decades. Through this investigation, Mahar adds an important intergenerational study to the existing body of literature on Oaxaca, particularly concerning the factors that have reshaped the lives of urban working poor families and have created a working-class fraction of globalized citizenship.

Summary:

Being a computer nerd makes saving the land of the Faerie a bit of a doddle for Jeremiah Willow-Bottom. Watching a raindrop running down a windowpane one day he imagines he sees an old, gnarled, leafless forest, moss-covered and sad. His daydream becomes reality one night when he looks deeply into another raindrop and he actually finds himself in the place he calls the Dark Land. However, something startles him and he immediately returns to his bedroom. All his further attempts to return to the strange place are thwarted. Then, one day on a nature trip he accidentally put his name down for, he meets Dandelion Flamethrower, a rather rude and sarcastic Goth fairy. Unfortunately, their meeting has been witnessed by his nemesis who is trying to take over the Dark Land by use of a curse and, upon his return there, Jeremiah has a crisis of identity.
