W.B. Yeats "The Second Coming". Analysis of an Apocalyptic Poem by Anna Stumpe Summary

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, Martin Luther University (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: William Butler Yeats, language: English, abstract: William Butler Yeats did not just believe in the apocalypse, he was known for his prophetic insights and imaginative visions of the breakdown of civilization. As the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar ends on December, 21 in 2012, many people suggest this date marks the end of the world or of human civilization. It is of a certain interest that already in the early twentieth century Yeats was concerned with this kind of apocalyptic worldview. “The Second Coming” therefore is one of the poems that also represents his understanding of the apocalypse, which is not comparable to those who believe in the prophecy of the Mayan calendar. “For him, the apocalypse is always connected with genuine spiritual revelation [and] with vision,” as it is the literal translation of the Greek word (Howes, Kelly 2006: 52). With this iconic, prophetic poem, he is not only regarded a public hero but also deviates from established popular beliefs, wherefore he is also named the first iconoclastic Modernist in English writing. The stunning, violent imagery and terrifying ritualistic language makes “The Second Coming” an archetypal poem about the return of history with violence. Likewise, as it was composed in 1919 and published in 1920, it represents Yeats’ immediate reaction to the political instable situation of Ireland, England and Europe after Civil War, Russian Revolution and WWI. In consequence to that, “The Second Coming” is one the most obscure works of Yeats, hence quite difficult to understand in the first place. For this reason, firstly, this paper concentrates on the historical and political background information, which is fundamental to the poem’s understanding. Secondly, it is this examination’s method to analyze and interpret the poem’s form, structure and images. At that, not only “The Second Coming” in its structure but also this chapter divides into three parts, from which each displays another phase in the development of the poet’s state of mind. Consequently, each line of “The Second Coming” is examined, both to explain the poet’s development and to prove the central issues of W.B. Yeats’ poem. Eventually, this paper provides a conclusion, wherein its argumentation is summarized. This summary consequently also states the poem’s effect on the reader.

The Second Coming by John Heubusch Summary

In this fast-paced sequel to The Shroud Conspiracy “that Dan Brown fans will love” (Library Journal), the child cloned from the blood on the Shroud of Turin has the potential to change the world—or to destroy it for good. “John Heubusch is brilliant. I would read anything he writes” (Peggy Noonan, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and bestselling author). In this “sensational sequel” (Steve Forbes), a fallen angel is mistakenly resurrected from the blood of an evil “Watcher” taken from the Shroud of Turin, and the fiend bestows an unstoppable plague on the world. Dr. Jon Bondurant, the forensic anthropologist and avowed atheist, joins with devout Domenika Josef to bring another child of the Shroud into the world to save it, this one borne of DNA believed to be that of Jesus Christ. Can this child be the answer to their—and mankind’s—prayers? His parents are uncertain just who the child is or what he will become, but when he starts demonstrating remarkable powers to heal, they begin to understand that whatever he is, he is not of this world. Might he bring miracles to the world when it needs them the most? Or has science given mankind a tool with which it will destroy itself as the tempting power of the Watcher unfolds? What follows is a globe-spanning chase to uncover the truth and stop a pandemic that just may wipe out humanity once and for all in a “smart, electrifying thriller that delivers cover-to-cover” (Brad Thor, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Spymaster).

The Second Coming by Franco Berardi Summary

We have entered the gateway to the apocalypse. This theological concept is the best metaphor to describe the world in which we are already living. Chaos is all around us: political folly, economical delirium, ecological catastrophe, intellectual cynicism, technological simulation of life. This is what Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi suggests in this wry, dark, disconcerting but also brilliant and invigorating journey through the main events that we have witnessed in recent years. One century after the Communist revolution, the very idea that the world could be changed for the better seems dead once and for all. Every time that a new change occurs nowadays, it seems to be a change for the worse. But the fact that nothing can save us any more shouldn’t be seen as a form of fatality or a reason for surrender. On the contrary, if our world is dead, then the space is open for another to appear – a world where apocalypse can shake us out of our zombie-like contemporary existence. The second coming of Communism will have nothing to do with 1917. Apocalypse has to be conceived of as a metaphor, and Communism is a metaphor too: the metaphor of the possible deployment of the potentials of the mind.

The Second Coming of Christ by D. L. Moody,Harriet Beecher Stowe,J. C. Ryle,George Muller,D. W. White,G. C. Needham,Charles H. Spurgeon Summary

This book was originally published in 1896. It has eight chapters, each one written by a well-known minister of the era, except the last chapter written by an unknown with the initials J.W. Written for the layman, not the scholar, each chapter is in one way or another about the return of Christ. It is a very good book for anyone seeking to learn the basics of the second coming of Christ, called eschatology. Even though I have written four books on Bible prophecy, I plan to read this book and add it to my library. (Michael D. Fortner, publisher) AUTHORS of the chapters: 1. Harriet Beecher Stowe 2. D. L. Moody 3. J. C. Ryle 4. George Muller 5. D.W. White 6. G. C. Needham 7. Charles H. Spurgeon 8. J.W.

The Second Coming by John MacArthur Summary

"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." John 14:3 ESV Jesus Christ was very clear: One day He will return-and none of us knows when. Vocal fanatics claim to know the details of the Second Coming, causing many Christians to all but ignore the good news that Jesus is coming again. Yet God's own Word commands us to know the signs of the times, to remain watchful, and to be ready-whenever Christ comes. This book is a straightforward, in-depth exploration of the key biblical texts regarding the Second Coming; most notably, Christ's longest and most important eschatological message, the Olivet Discourse. As you study what the Word of God says about these matters, it will stir in your heart an earnest longing for Christ's return-as well as a certainty about how to live expectantly until He comes again.

Jesus calls the leaders of all major religions to a meeting, where he will try and reconcile their beliefs to God’s wishes. Naturally, this visit stirs a great deal of controversy and many surprises. The conclusion of this visit is clear and easily understood. What does God want from us?

The Second Coming by J. F. C. Harrison Summary

First published in 1979, The Second Coming is an experiment in the writing of popular history – a contribution to the history of the people who have no history and an exploration of some of the ideas, beliefs and ways of thinking of ordinary men and women in the late eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth centuries. Millenarianism is a conceptual tool with which to explore some aspects of popular thought and culture. It is also seen as an ideology of social change and as a continuing tradition, traced from the end of the seventeenth century to the 1790s, and is shown to be embedded in folk culture. Abundant in rich and lively descriptions of such colourful characters as Richard Brothers, Joanna Southcott, John Wroe, Zion Ward and Sir William Courtenay, as well as studies of the Shakers, early Mormons and Millerites, the result is a window into the world of ordinary people in the Age of Romanticism.

Behold! the Second Coming of Jesus Christ Is Near by Sarah A. Jones Summary

And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give to every man according as his work shall be. —Revelation 22:12 KJV Are you prepared for the return of Jesus Christ? People have talked about it, read, wrote, sung, joked, and made movies about it. In March 2006, author Sarah A. Jones heard a voice in her dream say to her, “Let your testimony be: ‘Jesus Christ is Coming!’ The people must be told so that they can be prepared upon His arrival.” Therefore she has written this book about His return; what we can do according to God’s word to be prepared for this inevitable event; and what will happen to those who are not prepared. A MUST READ! I pray that this book will bless you, enlighten, and inspire you to seek God, and draw closer to Him in hope that you will be prepared for Jesus’ arrival. Allow God to speak to your heart as you read with expectation to hear and receive from Him. You will be amazed, and your life will never be the same. We guarantee it! Time is running out. Believe it or not; prepared or not; Jesus Christ is coming! For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with His truth. —Psalm 96:13 NJKV

The Second Coming of the KKK: The Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s and the American Political Tradition by Linda Gordon Summary

An urgent examination into the revived Klan of the 1920s becomes “required reading” for our time (New York Times Book Review). Extraordinary national acclaim accompanied the publication of award-winning historian Linda Gordon’s disturbing and markedly timely history of the reassembled Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s. Dramatically challenging our preconceptions of the hooded Klansmen responsible for establishing a Jim Crow racial hierarchy in the 1870s South, this “second Klan” spread in states principally above the Mason-Dixon line by courting xenophobic fears surrounding the flood of immigrant “hordes” landing on American shores. “Part cautionary tale, part expose” (Washington Post), The Second Coming of the KKK “illuminates the surprising scope of the movement” (The New Yorker); the Klan attracted four-to-six-million members through secret rituals, manufactured news stories, and mass “Klonvocations” prior to its collapse in 1926—but not before its potent ideology of intolerance became part and parcel of the American tradition. A “must-read” (Salon) for anyone looking to understand the current moment, The Second Coming of the KKK offers “chilling comparisons to the present day” (New York Review of Books).
