The Secret Sentry by Matthew M. Aid Summary

In February of 2006, Matthew Aid's discovery of a massive secret historical document reclassification program then taking place at the National Archives made the front page of the New York Times. This discovery is only the tip of the iceberg of Aid's more than twenty years of intensive research, culled from thousands of pages of formerly top secret documents. In The Secret Sentry, he details the untold history of America's most elusive and powerful intelligence agency, the National Security Agency (NSA), since the end of World War II. This will be the first comprehensive history of the NSA, most recently in the news with regards to domestic spying, and will reveal brand new details about controversial episodes including the creation of Israel, the Bay of Pigs, the Berlin Wall, and the invasion of Iraq. Since the beginning of the Cold War, the NSA has become the most important source of intelligence in the US government: 60% of the president's daily briefing comes from the NSA. Matthew Aid will reveal just how this came to be, and why the NSA has gone to such great lengths to keep its history secret.

Struggle for Control of the Hinterland of the Bight of Biafra by Dr. Frank Nwabueze Ihekwaba Summary

This book tells the story of the people of Igbo land at the middle of the nineteenth century, when Europe and Europeans held the dominant power over the lives and affairs of many peoples in Africa. This dominance, however, was never supposed to be total or absolute. Nevertheless, it managed to cast a constricting shadow—with its associated, if unhealthy, ambience—on the day-to-day lives of the people using the overwhelming military and economic power at its disposal at a time when Africans were either recovering from five hundred years of stupor brought on by its own dark ages (AD 1100–1600) or the shock and paralysis that followed the Moroccan (Mohamedan) and Spanish-mercenary-assisted mayhem and chaos of 1591 against the African kingdoms of West Africa. But the white man would soon lose most of his political and economic opportunities, and some of the absolute attributes he had mustered over the years the moment Britain and the other European races saw themselves as divinely appointed to right the wrongs of mankind. He would, from then on, render himself vulnerable to the tide of African enlightenment and progress, which was then building up everywhere, once the trade by which he had gained his ascendency over the other races of mankind began to decline. In addition, European ascendency witnessed an unusual reversal of luck when its residual strengths, recently boosted with the development of some newer types of weaponry—the Maxim machine gun in the UK (1883) and the Mauser Machine gun (1891) in Germany—weapons whose astonishing power and versatility had not previously been seen or tested in any battlefront, became more widely available to European and non-European troops. These, however, could not provide definitive answers to all the tactical and strategic imperatives of the developing new battlefront which European armies had sought. Nevertheless, these new weapons became celebrated after they were successfully used to hold the line and repel hordes of brave native fighters armed only with machetes and spears (South Africa) and bows and arrows (Kitchener’s Sudan), enabling British forces to claim easy victories over the native forces; several Victoria Crosses would be won on both battlefronts by the British army. The success of the campaigns clearly went to the heads of the victorious army commanders. Thus were sown the seeds that would grow, leading to the idea of invincibility of the white man in the battlefield and the tragic events that preceded the First World War (1914–1918).

Waggoners Gap by Tony Peluso Summary

Waggoners Gap is a spiritual place with unique natural beauty and breathtaking vistas overlooking the Cumberland Valley near Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It is also a pivotal locale in the sweeping story of two disparate families fighting for survival and success in the dark decades surrounding World War II. The Genero clan is at the heart of the story, which tracks the trials and travails of mother, father, son, and daughter whose lives are inevitably affected by a richer and more influential family, the Monarch clan, who control industry and primary employment for most of the people living in the shadow of Waggoners Gap. The generational confluence of these players takes place across a range of time in American history that includes World War I, the Great Depression and culminates in World War II when the Genero children—brother and sister—both enlist to support the war effort. During this time, the lecherous younger Monarch takes over the booming textile business and secretly begins to siphon off profits while mistreating his employees, including the Generos. The saga winds from Waggoners Gap through area colleges to Army training bases, ships at sea, battlefields in Europe and the Pacific, and back again as truly colorful characters develop and influence each other through the decades. Through it all, in spite of deadly hardships overseas and dark dealings on the home front, Waggoners Gap draws the players together and repels them like a spinning magnet. Waggoners Gap is a compelling read. As a former Cobra pilot, I especially enjoyed the combat flying sequences in Europe and the Pacific. —Herb Caddell, retired Deputy U.S. Marshall Want to know what it was like to be an Airborne soldier in combat? Here is your chance. Tony Peluso does an outstanding job of putting you in the “boots on the ground” during World War II. By the time you finish reading this very detailed account of actual events, you will feel like you were there when it happened.... Airborne, all the way! —David F., former Airborne Officer

The Time's Discipline by Philip Berrigan,Elizabeth McAlister Summary

In The Time's Discipline. Philip Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister offer us a chronicle of their community in Baltimore. They show us that for their nonviolent community, resistance to the nuclear arms race is not merely a political endeavor, but most profoundly a spiritual endeavor, rooted in fidelity to the Gospel. Thus the reporting of Jonah House's first fifteen years is formed around the Beatitudes, eight points of blessing at the outset of Matthew's presentation of the Sermon on the Mount. Invariably for Phil & Liz and those who have been part of their work at Jonah house and related endeavors, that spirituality is not abstract, but rooted in community and resistance and thus very much of this world and in service to its highest good. Understanding that we live in a nuclear empire, they present us in these pages, their experiment in truth in its midst.

The Youngest Patriot by Gene Ligotti Summary

The year is 1776. A memorable year in American history. A year every American points to with pride, but what was it like to live during that year? Indeed during all the years of the British occupation of Long Island and New York. More to the point of this story, what was it like for a young thirteen year old farm boy to grow up on Long Island during that seven year occupation? The Youngest Patriot is the story of just such a young boy. It is the story of Elijah Churchill who meets Lieutenant Benjamin Tallmadge of the Continental Army who is on his way to Brooklyn Heights to join with his 2nd Connecticut Light Dragoons. Elijah pleads with Tallmadge to take him with him so that he can join the army and fight for his country. Tallmadge tells him he is too young. Elijahs father forbids him to even try to enlist. Defying them both he runs away from home and goes to Brooklyn Heights where Washingtons army is building fortifications against the impending British invasion. Through a series of events, Elijah does indeed become a soldier and his life intertwines with that of Benjamin Tallmadge. The tale of these seven years as Elijah becomes a man, has as its backdrop the exciting American revolution; our fight for liberty and independence. The account shows the beginnings of the Secret Service and the Central Intelligence Agency. Tallmadge and Elijah become very much a part of the Culper spy ring set up by General Washington. A secret message would run full circle, if you will, from Oyster Bay to New York City by courier, by horseback out to Setauket, and by whaleboat across the Long Island Sound to Connecticut. The saga of Nathan Hale is told as seen through the eyes of those who knew him and it was the Culper spy ring that first uncovered the plot which exposed and brought disgrace to Benedict Arnold. The narrative tells of George Washingtons frustration as he keeps hope for freedom alive as he repeatedly evades contact with the British until his initial victories at Trenton and Princeton. This is the story of the most important American war as seen through the eyes of a young boy from Setauket as he grows to manhood. His fears, anxieties, troubles, memories, and battles for the young republic culminate with Elijah receiving the Purple Heart designed and awarded by General Washington.

A Farewell to Arms & For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway Summary

A Farewell to Arms – Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American medic, is serving in the Italian Army during the First World War. It is the start of winter when a Cholera epidemic kills thousands of soldiers. Frederic has a brief visit to Gorizia where he meets with other army fellows and the priest. His friend, Surgeon Rinaldi, takes him to a British hospital where Frederic is introduced to Catherine Barkley, an English nurse. However, over the course of the war Henry's duty as a soldier begins to interfere with his love with Catherine. Situations get so murky and tense that Henry is forced to becomea deserter. Will the two ever meet again or will the war be the end of everything?_x000D_ For Whom the Bell Tolls– The novel tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. It was published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), whose general lines were well known at the time. It assumes the reader knows that the war was between the government of the Second Spanish Republic, which many foreigners went to Spain to help and which was supported by the Soviet Union, and the Nationalist faction, which was supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. It was commonly viewed as the dress rehearsal for the Second World War.
