Summary:

McArdle weaves together corporate case studies of triumphs and flops, core findings of behavioral economics, and her own bad luck in losing a succession of jobs during the Great Recession. . . . To get where you want to go, McArdle sagely notes, you must first give yourself permission to suck. Seeing how this epiphany earns her a freer, failure-embracing growth mindset is like watching a flower unfold. McArdle combines a shrewd knowledge of economics and practical experience with a writing style that every so often segues into comedy monologue. . . . Americans fail a lot, she argues. . . . But good judgment comes from experience. And experience comes from bad judgment from failures. The key question is how you respond, whether you learn from failure and rebound.

Summary:

Environmental disasters. Terrorist wars. Energy scarcity. Economic failure. Is this the world's inevitable fate, a downward spiral that ultimately spells the collapse of societies? Perhaps, says acclaimed author Thomas Homer-Dixon - or perhaps these crises can actually lead to renewal for ourselves and planet earth. The Upside of Down takes the reader on a mind-stretching tour of societies' management, or mismanagement, of disasters over time. From the demise of ancient Rome to contemporary climate change, this spellbinding book analyzes what happens when multiple crises compound to cause what the author calls "synchronous failure." But, crisis doesn't have to mean total global calamity. Through catagenesis, or creative, bold reform in the wake of breakdown, it is possible to reinvent our future. Drawing on the worlds of archeology, poetry, politics, science, and economics, The Upside of Down is certain to provoke controversy and stir imaginations across the globe. The author's wide-ranging expertise makes his insights and proposals particularly acute, as people of all nations try to grapple with how we can survive tomorrow's inevitable shocks to our global system. There is no guarantee of success, but there are ways to begin thinking about a better world, and The Upside of Down is the ideal place to start thinking.

Summary:

Next time you go to a conference or hire a consultant to be told, 'We live in a VUCA [Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous] world, ' leave the room. You are wasting your time. In a world of fake news, deep-fakes, manipulated feeds of information and divisive social-media agendas, it's easy to believe that our time is the most challenging in human history. It's just not true. It is a time of extraordinary opportunity. But only if you have the right mindset. Fear of the future breeds inaction and leads to strategic paralysis. We put off decisions until we can have certainty. We look for signals. We wait. And while we do that, the world moves on around us. Problem-solvers thrive in chaotic and uncertain times because they act to change their future. Winners recognise that in a world of growing uncertainty, you need to resort to actions on things you can control. And the only things over which you have absolute control are your attitude and your mindset. These, in turn, determine the actions you will take and that will define your future. A robust mindset is the one common characteristic Bruce Whitfield has identified in two decades of interrogating how South Africa's billionaires and start-up mavericks think differently. They are not naive Pollyannas. They don't ignore risk or hope that problems will go away. They constantly measure, manage, consider and weigh up opportunities in a tumultuous sea of uncertainty and find ways around obstacles. If, as Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Shiller suggests, the stories we tell affect economic outcomes, then we need to tell different stories amidst the noise and haste of a rapidly evolving world.

Summary:

America is in decline, and the rise of the East suggests a bleak future for the world's only superpower – so goes the conventional wisdom. But what if the traditional measures of national status are no longer as important as they once were? What if America's well-being was assessed according to entirely different factors? In The Upside of Down, Charles Kenny argues that America's so-called decline is only relative to the newfound success of other countries. And there is tremendous upside to life in a wealthier world: Americans can benefit from better choices and cheaper prices offered by schools and hospitals in rising countries, and, without leaving home, avail themselves of the new inventions and products those countries will produce. The key to thriving in this world is to move past the jeremiads about America's deteriorating status and figure out how best to take advantage of its new role in a multipolar world. A refreshing antidote to prophecies of American decline, The Upside of Down offers a fresh and highly optimistic look at America's future in a wealthier world.

Summary:

Susan Biggar fell in love with a New Zealander. Maybe as an American, she saw Darryl as a ticket to an exhilarating, global life. When her first son arrived, he came with fierce blue eyes, a curly toe and cystic fibrosis. The doctors said he would be lucky to reach the age of thirty. A job offer in Paris snatched the family from New Zealand, depositing them in the city of lights, romance—and a whole new medical world. When Susan’s second baby was also born with cystic fibrosis , the insignificant worries of her old life slipped away, shifting her from ‘normal mum’ to ‘gotta-figure-out-how-to-keep-the-kids-alive-mum’. This—and all that followed—was not what she expected. Set across the globe—in California, New Zealand, France and Australia—The Upside of Down is a story of belief, of learning that sometimes joy is a decision. ‘A rare combination of laugh-out-loud humour and an intensely honest exploration of difficult issues … It’s like Eat, Pray, Love but with children, a husband and health issues along for the ride! Anyone who has ever experienced illness in their family or considered an expatriate life will want to read this book.’ — ANDREA J. MILLER, Shares in Life Foundation, NZ

Summary:

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An entertaining, humorous, and inspirational memoir by the founder and chief creative officer of the multimillion-dollar lifestyle brand ban.do, who “has become a hero among women (and likely some men too) who struggle with mental health” (Forbes). After graduating from college, Jen Gotch was living with her parents, heartbroken and lost, when she became convinced that her skin had turned green. Hallucinating that she looked like Shrek was terrifying, but it led to her first diagnosis and the start of a journey towards self-awareness, acceptance, success, and ultimately, joy. With humor and candor, Gotch shares the empowering story of her unlikely path to becoming the creator and CCO of a multimillion-dollar brand. From her childhood in Florida where her early struggles with bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety, and ADD were misdiagnosed, to her winding career path as a waitress, photographer, food stylist, and finally, accidental entrepreneur, she illuminates how embracing her flaws and understanding the influence of mental illness on her creativity actually led to her greatest successes in business and life. Hilarious, hyper-relatable, and filled with fascinating insights and hard-won wisdom on everything from why it’s okay to cry at work to the myth of busyness and perfection to the emotional rating system she uses every day, Gotch’s inspirational memoir dares readers to live each day with hope, optimism, kindness, and humor.

Summary:

I highly recommend this book if you want to be happier, healthier and wealthier. I read this book in one sitting and began implementing some of the ideas the next day. The ideas are easy to implement but powerful in their results. Jack Canfield, Co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and The Success PrinciplesOne of the downsides of life is that we rarely have to deal with an overabundance of gratitude. Most of us tend to focus on the negative. We dont receive nearly as much acknowledgment as we would like, and we dont give as much recognition as others deserve. Now for the upside! When we learn to harness the power of gratefulness, we can make a major positive difference in so many areas of our lives, as well as the lives of those around us. The Upside of Down Times is your first step toward making that happen.

Summary:

Like a roller coaster ride, life is filled with stomach-wrenching drops, dips, and sudden curves. But there is an upside to being down: God, who works in and through our troubles and never abandons us to disaster, provides a well-engineered superstructure and a carefully planned set of tracks and guardrails. Even when the ride is too hectic, unsettling, and twisted for us to sense His support and guidance, He is still there. This book is about learning to trust in God's work and provisions as the divine superstructure underneath every trial. When we understand the ultimate purpose behind our suffering, we will be willing to stay on board.

New science reveals how great pain and loss often pushes survivors to face their own mortality and to find a more meaningful and fulfilling understanding of who they are and how they want to live. "Good fruit springing from good soil is natural. Good fruit springing from toxic soil - from pain, from loss, from abuse: from trauma - that is supernatural. " -- Mark Buchanan, Pastor, Professor, Speaker, Author of The Rest of God "Two people go through traumatic trials. One comes through the fire resilient, even stronger. The other stumbles and struggles. These questions and others are gently asked, thoughtfully parsed, and prayerfully explored in the hands and words of a true professional. Summary:

The Upside of Down is one young woman's memoir of her time with depression and how she managed to overcome this debilitating illness. During her struggle, Tamra used herself as a guinea pig, experimenting with natural therapies and concepts until she developed a toolkit that others could also use to guide them out of the pit of negativity. This book recognizes that there is no magic pill for depression and that a holistic approach is needed to permanently end the pain. It is packed with tips and ideas on how to make small lifestyle changes to rebalance your biochemistry. It is proof that people with depression can, and do, live fun and magical lives. This is a truly fabulous book with a compelling style. It goes beyond Tamra's experience with depression, providing proven strategies to turn your life around. The best part is that it's elegantly written and jargon free making it easy to digest.' - Jane Lomax-Smith, SA Mental Health Minister

Summary:

Jesus' life should turn our world upside-down. His first observers, according to Luke, were routinely seized with amazement, both at the bending of physics--making the blind see and lame walk--and at the ridiculous things he did and taught. A careful look at the Jesus of the Gospels sketches a man completely out of touch with conventional thinking; a man radically devoted to living a shocking life for the sake of the broken and forgotten. In popular depictions of Jesus today he seems to be more concerned with upholding a conventional way of life than with overturning our understanding of ourselves. Jesus' life story should lead more to humble servanthood than to syncopated light shows in church or the triumph of a political candidate or a well-ordered and respectable lifestyle. The Upside Down Way is a series of devotionals drawn from the text of Luke. Each devotional is an invitation to a fresh look at the outrageous words and actions of Jesus. Author and pastor Matthew Ingalls combines rigorous historical study with a voice that is unflinchingly bold, reflective, honest, and challenging, in order to elevate Luke's ridiculous Jesus to his rightful position as the fountain of Christian faith.

Summary:

Turning the World Upside Down is a search to understand what is happening and what it means for us all. It is based on Nigel Crisp's own journey from running the largest health system in the world to working in some of the poorest countries, and draws upon his own experiences to explore new ideas and innovations around the world. The book has three unique features: Describes what rich countries can learn from poorer ones, as well as the other way round Deals with health in rich and poor countries in the same way, not treating them as totally different, and suggests that instead of talking about international development we should talk about co-development Sets out a new vision for global health, and our rights and accountabilities as citizens of the world There is an unfair import export business in people and ideas that flourishes between rich and poor countries. Rich countries import trained health workers and export their ideas and ideology about health in poorer ones, whether or not they are appropriate or useful. What, Nigel Crisp asks, if we were to turn the world upside down - so the import export business was reversed and poorer countries exported their ideas and experience whilst richer ones exported their health workers? Health leaders in poorer countries, without the resources or the baggage of rich countries, have learned to innovate, to build on the strengths of the population and their communities and develop new approaches that are relevant for the rich and poor alike. At the same time, richer countries and their health workers could help poorer countries to train, in their own country, the workers they need for the future. They would help pay a debt for all the workers who have migrated and learn themselves the new ways of working, which they will need in the 21st Century. We could stop talking about international development - as something the rich world does to the poor - and start talking about co-development, our shared learning and shared future. There is already a movement of people and ideas travelling in this direction. Young people get this intuitively. Many thousands of young professionals want a different professional education for themselves - in global health. Together with the leaders from poorer countries and the innovators around the world, they are creating a new global vision for health. Turning the World Upside Down is a search for understanding that helps us to see how Western Scientific Medicine, which has served us so well in the 20th Century, needs to adapt and evolve to cope with the demands of the 21st Century. It sets our a new vision and concludes by describing the actions we need to take to accelerate the change.

Summary:

THIS BOOK IS about an ancient truth that, for the most part, man has been blinded to. The secret is found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and has to do with the greatest blessings in life being either attracted to or repelled from us. The blessings of God are available to the people who know how to attract the power of grace. Unfortunately, because God is no respecter of persons, he will resist or be repelled from those who don't. We know about natural laws such as gravity, or the law of lift, but we don't know much about the laws of the Spirit. These also work whether you believe them or not, understand them or not, just like the natural earthy laws. I like to call these laws of the spirit technology of the soul. This technology is something we need to embrace because it will help us do and live this life so much better. You see, when you humble yourself it doesn't mean you're When you humble yourself it doesn't mean you're giving in to bad behaviors or saying the way you're being treated is just or fair. weak. When you humble yourself it doesn't mean you're giv- ing in to bad behaviors or saying the way you're being treated is just or fair. This is the struggle most people have with the very idea of humble. They believe if they humble themselves, then they are giving up their power, when actually they are releasing a greater force than they can imagine. When I talk about the upside of down, I am talking about going higher through a soul technology I call the principle of humble. I want you to see and experience real power available for every nook and cranny of your life. Are you struggling with financial or career issues? What about how to deal with a co-worker, employee, or someone over you in your business? What if you could tap into a secret, hidden power that would help you navigate through the slippery slopes and potentially potent paths that are common to all of us mere humans? Now, would it interest you to know that unlimited power is available to the humble? I hope I now have your attention. What if everything you wanted in life could really be yours if you only knew how to receive it? Did you notice I didn't say take it?What would you say if I told you I thought most of what we've heard about humble is wrong? We've gotten "humble" so messed up! I want to help you receive the real power of grace, but you have to know what is kryptonite and will not allow it to work on your behalf. Ken is the founder of Save the Nations Church, which began in 2006 with his wife Lisa at his side. He is a native of New York born into a Jewish family. After a life-changing encounter with Jesus, ken became a Christian Pastor. After many years of denying and running from his Heritage he now teaches those born Jewish or not their identity through the Hebraic roots of the Christian Faith.Together they also oversee a thriving church in Rio Brazil. They have been married for over 35 years and have one daughter and granddaughter.
