Aug 9 - Fog by Kathryn Scanlan Summary

A Paris Review Staff Pick, one of Chicago Tribune's 25 Hot Books of Summer, and one of The A.V. Club's 15 Most Anticipated Books of 2019 A stark, elegiac account of unexpected pleasures and the progress of seasons Fifteen years ago, Kathryn Scanlan found a stranger’s five-year diary at an estate auction in a small town in Illinois. The owner of the diary was eighty-six years old when she began recording the details of her life in the small book, a gift from her daughter and son-in-law. The diary was falling apart—water-stained and illegible in places—but magnetic to Scanlan nonetheless. After reading and rereading the diary, studying and dissecting it, for the next fifteen years she played with the sentences that caught her attention, cutting, editing, arranging, and rearranging them into the composition that became Aug 9—Fog (she chose the title from a note that was tucked into the diary). “Sure grand out,” the diarist writes. “That puzzle a humdinger,” she says, followed by, “A letter from Lloyd saying John died the 16th.” An entire state of mourning reveals itself in “2 canned hams.” The result of Scanlan’s collaging is an utterly compelling, deeply moving meditation on life and death. In Aug 9—Fog, Scanlan’s spare, minimalist approach has a maximal emotional effect, remaining with the reader long after the book ends. It is an unclassifiable work from a visionary young writer and artist—a singular portrait of a life revealed by revision and restraint.

Laughlab by The British Association For The Advancement Of Science Summary

In September 2001 the British Association for the Advancement of Science (the BA) embarked on the world's largest, and most unusual, scientific experiment. The aim of the project was to find the world's funniest joke, and answer important questions about the psychology of humour. For example, Do men and women find the same jokes funny? Does our sense of humour change as we get older? What is the best time of day to tell a joke? Do different nations laugh at the same jokes? The experiment was called LaughLab and was carried out as part of Science Year in the UK. An Internet site was established containing two sections: in the first, people submitted their favourite jokes; in the second they answered a few simple questions about themselves - male or female, age, nationality, etc - and then rated how funny they found a random selection of jokes. The experiment captured the imagination of individuals throughout the world. 40,000 jokes were received and evaluated by 350,000 people. At the end of the project the information was carefully examined and discoveries made about the jokes that made men giggle and women groan, those that tickled kids but not adults, and the jokes that were the most popular in different countries. Along the way the 'winning' jokes in different categories were uncovered, including the best 'doctor' jokes

Led by a colorful, but perhaps untrustworthy local guide, Prescott journeys deep into the Bolivian Amazon, plunging into a world where the only thing more dangerous than the gun-toting drug traffickers and the ruthless tribesmen, is the jungle itself. When Gina’s trail leads to a chance encounter with an archaeological expedition, the search for the missing doctor takes on even deadlier consequences. But Prescott will not relent in this punishing quest until, once again, he holds Gina in his arms. The books in The Thomas Prescott Series can be enjoyed in any order, so grab Jungle Up and get started today.

Handbook for Teachers and Parents by Szilvay, Géza Summary

THE ALL-NEW FULLY REVISED HANDBOOK FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS! The Handbook for Teachers and Parents brings together the entire Colourstrings® series for the violin. The Handbook guides the teachers and parents through books A–F and Yellow Pages I–III, offering expert advice and methodological support to teaching in Colourstrings® method. The method makes use of colourful teaching materials and supports learning by appealing to many senses. Founded on the principles of Zoltán Kodály, Colourstrings® develops the capacity for internal listening so that the child learns to visualize the notes heard and to aurilize the notes on the page. The method has been fostered by ESTA, ASTA, AUSTA, ISME, NMPU and IKS. According to Géza Szilvay, the Colourstrings® method can make a violin player of almost anyone with motivation. The key to maintaining musical culture lies with the teacher. The Colourstrings® is a teaching method developed by Géza and Csaba Szilvay. The method is ideal for preschool beginners and can be used effectively in instrumental teaching throughout the school years. It creates an environment in which singing, playing games and instrument live side by side, for the happiness of the child. The Colourstrings® approach developed by the Szilvay brothers has gained an international reputation and is now taught all over the world. A number of special Colourstrings® institutions – schools, centres and societies – have been established in several European countries in order to implement and further this child-centred teaching concept.
