Summary:

In a small village in China, the Wang family has produced seven sisters in its quest to have a boy; three of the sisters emerge as the lead characters in this remarkable novel. From the small-town treachery of the village to the slogans of the Cultural Revolution to the harried pace of city life, Bi Feiyu follows the women as they strive to change the course of their destinies and battle against an “infinite ocean of people” in a China that does not truly belong to them. Yumi will use her dignity, Yuxiu her powers of seduction, and Yuyang her ambition—all in an effort to take control of their world, their bodies, and their lives. Like Dai Sijie’s Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha, and J.G. Ballard’s Empire of the Sun, Three Sisters transports us to and immerses us in a culture we think we know but will understand much more fully by the time we reach the end. Bi’s Moon Opera was praised by the Los Angeles Times, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and other publications. In one review Lisa See said: “I hope this is the first of many of Bi’s works to come to us.” Three Sisters fulfills that wish, with its irreplaceable portrait of contemporary Chinese life and indelible story of three tragic and sometimes triumphant heroines.

Summary:

Barbara is a physician and a pianist. Margo is a brilliant mathematician and a cellist. Lucia is a philosopher, nun, and a violinist. These amateur but talented and accomplished musicians have met to celebrate the silver jubilee of their Vows. This year the plan was to play, in its entirety, the music that brought them together and made them sisters in heart and mind for life: Tchaikovsky's Trio in A minor for Violin, Cello, and Piano; and they played it as never before! Barbara and Margo had never heard Lucia play as she did this time. Her violin sang with perfect intonation, controlled breathing, and redeeming passion, but after the performance, Lucia confesses to being found in a situation unbecoming to a nun. She is pregnant! Though she denies having been with a man, the facts confirm that her vows as a nun were violated and that she may have lied. Bound by the promise of trust, faith, and truth the three shared, Barbara and Margo had believed Lucia. Now they must ask themselves if their faith was unwarranted. Or could Lucia be telling the truth?

Summary:

In September 2000, I was sitting on a bench facing the Mediterranean Sea in the French Riviera town of Nice. I had flown there during a three-day break in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial in Camp Ziest, Netherlands, where I was expected to testify. As I sat on this bench eating lunch, I suddenly found myself overwhelmed by emotion. It was an awakening: I realized that my being there was the fulfillment of one of my many life dreams and goals that were launched thirty-one years earlier from another bench facing the Three Sisters Ponds in Baltimore's Druid Hill Park. Now, from a bench in the French Riviera, I began to chronicle the manifestation of those dreams and goals, accomplished through my thirty-six-year law enforcement career as a Baltimore City policeman and FBI agent. I'm hoping my story catches on with anyone who dares to dream and set challenging and aggressive life goals. I hope to inspire and encourage more interest in law enforcement careers by sharing my professional experiences and the educational, leadership, and career opportunities that were availed to me during my law enforcement career. My responsibilities as a Baltimore City policeman included saving lives, catching murder suspects, confronting wayward police, and dealing with crisis situations such as the 1971 student riots at the University of Maryland and the 1974 Baltimore City Police strike and riots. As an FBI agent, I was a part of the 1981 Brinks armored truck murder/robbery investigation in Nyack, NY; took part in New York FBI SWAT operations; and was involved in international extra-territorial terrorism investigations such as the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, the attempted bombing of then-Secretary of State George Shultz's motorcade in La Paz, Bolivia, and the kidnapping and murders of Americans in Srinagar, India, and Karachi, Pakistan.

Summary:

The plays of Chekhov are essential reading for anyone with an interest in Russian literature. In this volume, which was originally published in 1946, his three most important plays are reproduced by photo-offset from the Gosizdat Leningrad edition of 1935. Although the plays were available singly at the time, this was the only edition to contain the three Russian texts in one volume. It is a useful book for both libraries and students.

Summary:

The author's contention is that Chekhov's plays have often been misinterpreted by scholars and directors, particularly through their failure to adequately balance the comic and tragic elements inherent in these works. Through a close examination of the form and content of Chekhov's dramas, the author shows how deeply pessimistic or overly optimistic interpretations fail to sufficiently account for the rich complexity and ambiguity of these plays. The author suggests that, by accepting that Chekhov's plays are synthetic tragi-comedies which juxtapose potentially tragic sub-texts with essentially comic texts, critics and directors are more likely to produce richer and more deeply satisfying interpretations of these works. Besides being of general interest to any reader interested in understanding Chekhov's work, the book is intended to be of particular interest to students of Drama and Theatre Studies and to potential directors of these subtle plays.

Summary:

Although the four novels published in her lifetime were well-received, much of Jane Austen's notoriety came about after her death. Her decision to publish anonymously was a standard for women in the early 19th Century, and furnished one of the most beloved writers in English literature little personal acclaim during her life. The stories in this collection are some of Austen's earliest writings, originally compiled by the author in her three-volume set, "Juvenilia." Although the charm of these pieces may not be appreciated by all Austen enthusiasts, they are an invaluable glimpse into the early talent of Austen, and her development as a poet, satirist, playwright and novelist. This edition has corrected some of the author's intentional misspellings for ease of the modern reader, in particular the word "Freindship" in Love and Friendship, however it should be noted that her quaint or misspellings and odd capitalizations were intended as a parody of the Romantic novels Austen read as a child.
