Guardian When lonely sixteen-year-old university student Blanche meets the dazzling Christa, she is swept off her feet. Christa, who talks freely of her impoverished background in the Eastern Belgian town of Malmedy, claims to work in a bar with her boyfriend, a David Bowie lookalike called Detlev. When Blanche's mother, who finds her own daughter rather colourless, bookish and dull, is also dazzled by Christa though, she soon invites her to stay at the family house. Suddenly Christa can do no wrong and, as Blanche's parents scour their address-books for long-lost friends to invite to dinner to meet the newcomer, their friendship sours and Blanche's already negligible self-confidence goes into a steep decline. With all the characteristics of Ameacute;lie Nothomb's unique fictional landscapes, Antechrista is a funny, dark and revealing journey through female friendship and rivalry.

Jack and Rochelle by Jack Sutin Summary

The memoir of a man and woman who escaped into the forest, joined the Jewish partisans—and fell in love—as Hitler laid waste to their Polish hometowns. Jack and Rochelle first met at a youth dance in Poland before the war. They shared one dance, and Jack stepped on Rochelle’s shoes. She was unimpressed. When the Nazis invaded eastern Poland in 1941, both Jack (in the town of Mir) and Rochelle (in the town of Stolpce) witnessed the horrors of ghettoization, forced labor, and mass killings that decimated their families. Jack and Rochelle managed, in their separate ways, to escape into the forest. They reunited, against all odds, in the winter of 1942–43 and became Jewish partisans who fought back against the Nazis. The couple’s careful courtship soon blossomed into an enduring love that sustained them through the raging hatred of the Holocaust and the destruction of the lives they had known. Jack and Rochelle’s story, told in their own voices through extensive interviews with their son, Lawrence, has been in print for twenty years and is celebrated as a classic of Holocaust memoir literature. This is the first electronic edition. “A story of heroism and of touching romance in a time of fear and danger.” —USA Today

Unifying Elements and Structural Patterns in Joseph Heller's Catch 22 by Franziska Massner Summary

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,7, University of Potsdam, course: American Literature and War, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Joseph Heller ́s Catch 22 has received much feedback since its publishment in 1961. Critics differ in their opions about Heller ́s first novel. Reviews in Time, the London Observer, Newsweek or Saturday Review expressed the enthusiasm which the novel caused among its readers. Robert Brustein called Catch 22 an “explosive, bitter, subversive, brilliant book”, The Times said: “Written with brilliance...echoes with mad laughter...magnificient.” These are only two examples of many positive responses towards the book. But as usual there also have been various negative critics about Catch 22. Some reviewers found Heller ́s book “unpatriotic, its sexual references offensive, its style repetitious, its structure incoherent, its characters unbelievable.”Others even argued that the book is not a novel, that it doesn ́t show any structural pattern or unifying elements. This work is supposed to show that Catch 22 contains structural patterns as well as unifying elements, that Heller ́s first novel rightly deserves the positive reviews on his book. It starts to discover some of the most central themes in the book and then deals with a few structural patterns of Catch 22.
