Summary:

Since the first edition of Managing the Unexpected was published in 2001, the unexpected has become a growing part of our everyday lives. The unexpected is often dramatic, as with hurricanes or terrorist attacks. But the unexpected can also come in more subtle forms, such as a small organizational lapse that leads to a major blunder, or an unexamined assumption that costs lives in a crisis. Why are some organizations better able than others to maintain function and structure in the face of unanticipated change? Authors Karl Weick and Kathleen Sutcliffe answer this question by pointing to high reliability organizations (HROs), such as emergency rooms in hospitals, flight operations of aircraft carriers, and firefighting units, as models to follow. These organizations have developed ways of acting and styles of learning that enable them to manage the unexpected better than other organizations. Thoroughly revised and updated, the second edition of the groundbreaking book Managing the Unexpected uses HROs as a template for any institution that wants to better organize for high reliability.

Summary:

For families who have experienced the death of a child, their private tragedy is all too often exacerbated by an inappropriate or incompetent professional response. For the professional charged with the responsibility of having to deal with unexpected child deaths, such as a pediatrician, a police officer, or social worker, this title offers guidance on how to respond adequately to this tragic event but also places the subject in a larger social context, examining the history, epidemiology, causes, and contributory factors surrounding the death of a child. The book also covers the prevalence and types of death, the role of the police in an unexpected child death, how to support families, how to undertake a serious case review, and how to prevent child deaths in the future. Summary:

In January of 1861, on the eve of both the Civil War and the rebirth of the African Methodist Episcopal Church's Christian Recorder, John Mifflin Brown wrote to the paper praising its editor Elisha Weaver: "It takes our Western boys to lead off. I am proud of your paper." Weaver's story, though, like many of the contributions of early black literature outside of the urban Northeast, has almost vanished. Unexpected Places: Relocating Nineteenth-Century African American Literature recovers the work of early African American authors and editors such as Weaver who have been left off maps drawn by historians and literary critics. Individual chapters restore to consideration black literary locations in antebellum St. Louis, antebellum Indiana, Reconstruction-era San Francisco, and several sites tied to the Philadelphia-based Recorder during and after the Civil War. In conversation with both archival sources and contemporary scholarship, Unexpected Places calls for a large-scale rethinking of the nineteenth-century African American literary landscape. In addition to revisiting such better-known writers as William Wells Brown, Maria Stewart, and Hannah Crafts, Unexpected Places offers the first critical considerations of important figures including William Jay Greenly, Jennie Carter, Polly Wash, and Lizzie Hart. The book's discussion of physical locations leads naturally to careful study of how region is tied to genre, authorship, publication circumstances, the black press, domestic and nascent black nationalist ideologies, and black mobility in the nineteenth century.

Summary:

We have always needed God's blessing, though we forget this when the course of life seems smooth and steady. But when trouble visits, we turn to God and invoke his favor. Yet do we really know what we are asking for? And is it possible to live in such a way that blessing becomes part of the very fabric of life? (from the Introduction)When someone says, "God bless you," what does it mean? What does the blessing of God on our lives look like? Too often Christians have understood God's blessing in terms of the priorities of our popular culture. But in the Christian life, blessedness is more than good fortune, emotional happiness or material prosperity. True blessing runs counter to how the world operates and only comes through participating in the kingdom Jesus announced. One set of lenses for viewing this blessed life is found in the Beatitudes of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes are not a set of moral rules or a how-to manual. Nor are they "Eight Simple Steps to God's Blessing" or a self-improvement plan designed to guarantee God's favor. Instead, Cameron Lee sees the Beatitudes as a window through which we may view the new landscape that Jesus called the kingdom of heaven. He illustrates the nature of this kingdom by contrasting each Beatitude with the ways that our self-centered culture tugs at us. His exposition helps us reevaluate our cultural assumptions and challenge the world's values. As we live in light of the Beatitudes, those around us will see the appealing uniqueness of God's kingdom. And we will discover life as God meant it to be--marked by wholeness, transformation and freedom.

Summary:

Walking with Christ over thirty-five years now has its advantages; namely, remembering how God has given me His unexpected peace during many hard trials of life. I know many Christian women love to read about the experiences (joys and sorrows) of other Christian women and the victory in Christ theyve had. This is why I wrote about a few of mine, but most of all to give God all the glory due Him for proving Himself faithful time and time again. Im an ordinary Christian woman with some extraordinary events to share. I began my walk with Christ at the age of twenty-three. This ongoing relationship has had so many blessings, I wanted to share them with other women who may need reassurance in a personal God who never fails.

Summary:

In Unexpected Grace Bill Kramer offers a rare look into the human side of the world of scientific research. He goes behind the scenes of four scientific investigations on diverse aspects of the study of unlimited love and offers uplifting portraits of human beings struggling to understand and improve the complex issues facing them. He explores the dynamics between the researchers, the subjects they study, and the participants in the studies, and eloquently tells their personal stories. The stories touch on vastly different social and human issues, but all are connected by love. The first is the story of Courtney Cowart, who was part of a group of theologians who met at Trinity Place in lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001, not knowing her experience would become the subject of a study. The story of how the group struggled to survive and the formation of a practical, effective altruistic community is heartrending and inspiring. This is followed by a description of a University of California Santa Cruz psychology department study on the dynamics of friendship and prejudice that completely changed the perceptions of those involved. The third study, from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, focused on the benefits of religion on mental and physical health, which led its researcher to a greater understanding of forgiveness, humility, and grace. The final powerful story is about a physiology of love study conducted in Iowa City. Here, a functional MRI is the vehicle for measuring empathy and brings the researcher to wonder, "Is there a point at which empathy shuts down and we turn away?" Ultimately she comes to recognize that past experiences influences our ability to respond emphatically. Each story candidly unveils the transformations the researchers and their subjects experienced in the course of their work. This illuminating book, with its unique insights, will appeal to educators, researchers, students, study participants, and everyone who wonders what goes on behind the scenes of investigative studies.

Summary:

". . . from expected death comes unexpected new life!" The Gospel of Matthew does not shy away from the realities of struggle, suffering, doubt, and death. Yet, from the first names in the genealogy to the last words spoken by Jesus, the Gospel testifies to the promise that from expected death comes unexpected new life. Through the actions of Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba, we experience the expectation of death and the promise of unexpected new life. In the birth story of Jesus, Joseph suspects Mary of committing adultery. It is this dilemma that is the focus of the narrative. If he reveals her pregnancy, she could be killed. If he conceals her pregnancy, he will be going against the law of the Lord. What is a righteous man to do? In Joseph's dilemma, this experience of expected death, the Gospel of Matthew proclaims the promise of unexpected new life. The promise of unexpected new life is a theme that continues throughout Matthew's Gospel in the life and ministry of Jesus. The call of his disciples is a call from death to new life. The teaching of Jesus focuses on the experience of death and the promise of new life. In both healing and curing, Jesus brings unexpected new life to those who face death. But it is the death and resurrection of Jesus that is the climax of unexpected new life in the Gospel of Matthew. Even as Jesus experiences a most horrific and humiliating death in the crucifixion, death and the grave do not have the final say. In bearing witness to Jesus' resurrection, the Gospel of Matthew proclaims the magnificent promise of unexpected new life. Matthew J. Marohl invites you in these pages to read the Gospel of Matthew in a new way, from a fresh perspective. Integrating insights from the study of Mediterranean anthropology, Marohl makes the cultural world of the Gospel come alive, so that as you read Matthew again (or perhaps for the first time) you will certainly experience the powerful promise that from expected death comes unexpected new life!

Summary:

How can Christians live with a surprising God? How can we know and trust God without taming God or reducing God to an idol? Is knowing God the same thing as being open to God? Is God's freedom to act independently of our knowing him actually how we know him most genuinely and deeply? In Unexpected Jesus, Craig Hovey explores in depth the idea that the Christian gospel is a surprising encounter that calls for people to risk living with a God who shows up in unexpected ways. The Gospels often portray Jesus Christ as elusive and difficult to grasp. Hovey helps the reader to "un-expect" Jesus--to preserve Jesus's reality as a surprise rooted in the resurrection. As living and free, the joyous presence of Christ in the world is also unfathomable and uncontainable. Jesus's being free and surprising--unexpected--strengthens Christians' trust in God and helps them to live in God's world.

Summary:

In this heartfelt and thoughtful book, Christopher Heuertz writes of the dangers of isolation, the challenges we face when we join together and the struggles and joys that emerge from genuine community bonding. “Ironically, as much as we yearn for deep friendships and meaningful communities, many of us seem to be unable to find our way into them. Even if we know we’re made for community, finding one and staying there seems almost impossible. Though we hate to admit it, if we stay long enough in any relationship or set of friendships, we will experience failure, doubt, burnout, loneliness, transitions, a loss of self, betrayal, frustration, a sense of entitlement, grief, and weariness. Yet it’s these painful community experiences, these tensions we struggle to navigate, that hold surprising gifts.” —FROM THE PREFACE IN A STRIKINGLY confessional tone and vividly illustrated through story, Unexpected Gifts names eleven inevitable challenges that all friendships, relationships, and communities experience if they stay together long enough. Rather than allowing these challenges to become excuses to leave, Chris Heuertz suggests that things like betrayal, transitions, failure, loss of identity, entitlement, and doubt may actually be invitations to stay. And if we stay, these challenges can become unexpected gifts. *** Betrayal, failure, loss of identity, doubt. If your relationships have suffered from any of these pitfalls, this book will show you that staying together can create something more—even something beautiful. IN THIS HEARTFELT and thoughtful book, Christopher Heuertz writes of the dangers of isolation, the challenges we face when we join together, and the struggles and joys that emerge from genuine community bonding. Whether readers are forming a new community, searching for deeper community, or participating in a longtime community, they will find inspiration, caution, guidance, and encouragement as they discover the beauty of pressing in to the ambiguities of growing relationships in this tender and honest testimony about how we are woven together by grace.

Summary:

This story depicts a novelist who meets a female friend in a small Connecticut shoreline town where they were once childhood sweethearts during their teenage years. Their accidental meeting expands and flourishes into a deep binding love between them, and eventually explodes with many torrid sexual encounters they share with each other. This augmenting love eventually leads to a proposal, marriage, and ends tragically due to an untreatable disease that causes the death of his beloved wife and unborn child. His deep sorrow of the loss of his wife and child slowly evolves into a hardened hatred toward his religion and God, which he angrily denounces and blames as the cause of his losses. He immersed into a deepening void of grief over a period of time which eventually affected his health, and at which point prompted him to give away his vast fortune he had accumulated from the royalties of his published novels and movies which were made from them. Frank Johnson legally bequeathed all of his worldly goods to his wife's family members whom had exhibited kindness and respect to both he and his wife during their courtship. Although Frank refused the offering of a priest to hear his confession as he grew nearer to death, he did manage to make an Act of Contrition with the remaining strength, as he thought he heard his wife call out his name while he sat in a chair in front of a window overlooking the lake and admired the view as he exhaled his last breath and died smiling.

Summary:

This book of extraordinary photographs of the 'other side' of Egypt is the result of the more than three years that Italian photojournalist Silvia Dogliani spent in the country, traveling, meeting people, and looking out for the unexpected. Through her pictures she presents a remarkable--and different--portrait of Egypt, avoiding the well-known history and the popular views, focusing instead on life as it is lived by its people. Three main oppositions are the focus of this book: Noise--the infinite variety of sounds that are life's constant background--and Silence--secretly hidden and always desired; Spirit--a fascinating labyrinth of beliefs--and Movement--the action of lively faces and places; Past--the magnificent memories touched by nostalgia--and Future--the fervent wish for improvement. Complementing the 150 color pictures are informal interviews with Egyptians and non-Egyptians from all walks of life--both the famous and the not so famous--whose words give a further feeling of the real Egypt, an insight beyond the pyramids, temples, and tombs.

Summary:

The author of Unexpected Return weaves a tale and leads us by the hand down the paths of her imagination fecund with dreams and ideas. Unexpected Return's author starts off at a site from which she moves onwards in the vehicle of a narrative free from vanity and the constraints of effete literature. Thus in the hands of her characters---each masterfully situated within his own milieu---she achieved that for which she was striving: a concatenation of countless events, woes, tears, tragedies and times of anguish which make each character spring to life upon this novel's stinging pages. She describes with passionate affliction the arduous personal fight of one man to outrun a past which overshadowed his present and mercilessly punished him. A man who unflaggingly sought a possible redemption to deliver him beyond all doubt to the embrace of the only woman whom he ever truly loved.

Summary:

The recent financial crisis has questioned whether existing contracts may be adapted, terminated or renegotiated as a result of unexpected circumstances. The question is not a new one. In medieval times the notion of clausula rebus sic stantibus was developed to cope with such situations, and Germany introduced the theory of Wegfall der Geschäftsgrundlage. In England, the Coronation cases provided one possible answer. This comparative study explores the possibility of classifying jurisdictions as 'open' or 'closed' in this regard.

Summary:

In his second, full-length collection, poems of innocence and experience take readers from the schoolyard to the trout stream, from birth to death. Bruce Dethlefsen's familiar, folksy voice acquires new depth and darkness. As Max Garland notes, "there's clarity that's not to be confused with naivet or simplicity." Dethlefsen chooses to speak in a plain voice that makes room for the lyrical in these poems, using a common vocabulary and an understated tone of voice. While his previous collections have hinted at darker tints to life, this book allows the darkness its due, paying attention to death, to loss, to grief, and to anger. The people in this book, including the poet/speaker, are conflicted and multi-dimensional: failing, trying again, and, in the meantime, loving as best they can. W.E. Butts praises the balance of the "elliptical, conversational, playful, and serious," in Dethlefsen's poems. The shifts in voice, using song, pun, and rhyme by turn, bring the reader closer to the heart of the book and then playfully, skittishly, evade and deflect the attention. It is by what he leaves out, as much as what he says, that Dethlefsen expresses the inexpressible. The terms which spring to mind on reading Bruce Dethlefsen's poems, tenderness, kindness, gentleness, aren't words we're used to hearing in relation to contemporary poetry. These poems have a wide scope and a lot of give. They're tough enough to admit how fragile they-and we-are. And they whisper whatever you are feeling, whatever you are going through, you are not alone. You are not alone. Together, these poems lead us to, in Garland's words, "a redemptive vision of the world around us." Visit brucedethlefsen.org for more information about the poet. Summary:

'Lynette Arden lets us sit in the window seat while Travelling Through the Unexpected, as she distils crisp moments into memorable free-verse snapshots, stunning villanelles, haiku or tanka. Arden observes the fringe of fur on hippo ears; the giraffe's neck, escalator-long; and how the cricket stutter stops at a footfall. Equally adept at portraying her fellow humans, Arden notices the optimism as the ninety-year-old applies sunscreen and the migraine sufferer's view of the edge of a whirling fan. So sit back and enjoy this poetic journey, confidently and masterfully driven by a poet with depth, diversity and insight.' - Jude Aquilina 'Travelling Through the Unexpected' inscribes the arc of a life's journey with poignant glimpses along the way. While she employs a variety of poetic forms, her dexterity with images and succinctness particularly demonstrate Arden's mastery of Japanese brief forms. It's a world of random moments, pathos and acute observation where desiccated leaves whisper in a soft gossiping, rain slaps the glass / trickling summer dust / to a map of winter, wind scoops / the hollow of the letter box / slides under the door, a water jug on a train tilts against the horizon, a dying sister is commemorated Her hair...the colour of poured tea, the chirping of small birds pricks the air, a lake brimming like an eyeful of tears. This is Lynette Arden's first full collection. The wait has been worth it.' - Rob Walker 'Lynette Arden's competence and understanding of Japanese poetic genres are evident in her free verse too. Concise expression, clear imagery and a sense of the immediate are hallmarks of this collection. Individualism and independent thinking are apparent, balanced by a respect for history and deep regard for the natural world. Compassionate awareness of the lives of animals, both domesticated and untamed, bring an appealing dimension to her writing. The collection is expertly but unobtrusively sequenced in a way that invites the reader to keep turning pages: explore something new.' - Beverley Georg
